Just thought I would sign up to brag about my unexpected windfall of gold thanks to China

About a month and a bit ago I stopped playing GW2 due to me being busy for the Christmas season. I recently tried to log back on and found that my old password wasn't working. I assumed that I just forgot about it so contacted support to reset my password.

Once I got a new password I looked at my character and to my surprise he was lvl 80. I took a look at his items and found out that all the skins and other items that I previously had were gone. In place of my usual items were hundreds of crafting items, dyes, and gold weapons. As for my characters armour he had on all fully specced lvl 80 magic find gear. I also had two more elite skills than I used to. I immediately checked my account and what I saw was an unusual IP address that was authorized. I traced the IP address and it led to China...

At first I was depressed about it that my account got hacked by some Chinese guy and was talking to support about it. I took a closer look at my items and then realized that if I sold them all it would amount to more gold than I have ever had. I usually had about an average of 5-7 gold at any one time before. I immediately sold everything that I had in my inventory to the highest bidder in the Trading Post. By the end I had 36 gold. I know I could have played it smart and gotten the most out of the market if I really wanted to, but I'm a casual player and don't want to be bother with it. Probably some lucky guys out there getting tons of cheap items thanks to me.

And you might want to really look into how he was able to get your password. Do you have the IP authenticator, whatever it is called? A key logger on your computer? Used that same password somewhere else? Until you know how he did it, you may be still unsecured.

The first wave of hacks was due to fansites, like this one.

This is the first time I've heard that. The first wave of hacks was due to hackers checking lists of known usernames/passwords from other games when GW2 was first released.

If you're going to spread false information, at least get some of your facts correct. Makes you look more believable that way.

A lot of accounts were actually taken from people using the same e-mail and password on fansites.

I'm active on a few different forums (and some of which admitted to being hacked at one point) and used roughly the same passwords on them all for the past few years. I just changed all my passwords on everything so if there is a list out there with my info it won't work anymore.

Hopefully they didn't buy anything on the gem store lol. Might want to check on that.

Seriously - do a complete virus and malware scan - NOW. After you are certain your computer is clean, then start changing your passwords for everything.

Hopefully, all that was compromised was your GW2 account. But be prepared for things to be much worse.

This exact same thing happened to a guildmate of mine. He lost access to his account for a while, and then when he got it back his character was max level, fully geared, and wealthy. I guess it's not a bad exchange since you weren't trying to play the account anyway! It's scary to see people getting their accounts stolen, but it's nice to see some people are getting a decent return from the events.

on the same note, I had a friend who had a similar situation with his diablo 3 account and got back to his game to find a max level character and 24 mil gold on him.

I never paid for anything in-game so my credit card info wasn't on there. I also would have noticed if something was off a lot sooner when I got my bill

A virus scan was one of the first things I did when I found out about it.

Anyways, currently going for full lvl 80 exotics (which I'm pretty close to) and then going to look for some sexy skins.
