The Story

KimDaeil: "The story of Black Desert revolves around Chalpheon Republic and Valencia Kingdom battling it out for resources. Both countries are fighting because of the Black Desert which contains a lot of "Black Stones" a powerful magical stone that provides energy. The Chalpheon Republic is trying to make profit out of the stones, while Valencia Kingdom is trying to prevent it. The Black Desert is also known as the Red Desert because of the amount of bloodshed that is happening on these lands between the two countries."

Content Types

STEPARU: "Players will be able to adventure by solo play, party playing, field raids, normal raids, raid dungeons, chasing, defense kind of games, siege warfare, guild vs guild, and a lot of cool other features."

SCREENSHOTS

  • Predator (a shapeshifting/berserker type class)

The Predator is normally seen on the battlefield wielding two axes, leaping about chaotically with his jumping strike attacks, and overwhelming his enemies with a flurry of blows. But he can unleash even more destructive power by transforming himself, taking the form of a beast to attack ferociously with his bare hands.

Not missing a moment, the Beast transformation keeps up the upbeat and fast tempo of the Predator’s dual axe attacks. Reminiscent of a werewolf, he quickly rushes his enemies, striking with both front paws in a fearsome display of prowess.

Housing System

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tsD_FLgpGr4

STEPARU: "Since Black Desert Online is a semi-sandbox MMORPG, players will be able to build their houses in certain areas or rent places in cities or towns. They will also be able to purchase their houses through the auction house system. The house is fully customizable and can be filled with all kinds furnitures! The more objects and furnitures your place, the more NPC's will often stop by and become friendly with you. Like cooking? No problem, just set down the right furniture's and you can get started on cooking!"

STEPARU: "The housing system in this game is really interesting because there are a lot of things you can do in your house. For example, you can turn a part of your place into a store, smithing house, and etc. All of the houses in field, towns, and cities can be purchased by a player. Just as long as they win it through an Auction House bidding system. "
"Unfortunately, players will not be able to build houses whenever and wherever they want. According to their FB page players will be able to setup temporary tents out in the field but not be able to create their own houses. "

Trading System

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oSkC8fiLU4M
STEPARU: "The game also offers a trading system where players will be able to travel and trade goods from all over the world. Players can craft special items in certain areas and trade and deliver it to the other areas of the map. The trading map looks very handy, I wish ArcheAge also had a trading map to make things easier."

Developer Interview

Steparu Interview with KimDaeil
"Q: In Black Desert Online is it possible for players to walk from one continent to the other without load time?
A: Black Desert has seamless world, so players can run around the world without loading."

State of the Game

1/22/2013 STEPARU: "The latest Black Desert conference meeting had just ended and I got a lot of juicy new information along with a bunch of super HD screenshots and trailers for your viewing pleasure. As I have stated before on my previous article their game is almost complete, right now Pearl Abyss is focusing on adding extra content to their game so that they can keep their community busy. With that said, come on and check out some of the new things for Black Desert Online."

1/22/2013 STEPARU: "Pearl Abyss just revealed their brand new seven minute long trailer for their upcoming non-targeting action MMORPG Black Desert Online. The game is about 80% finished and Pearl Abyss is looking forward to start their first Closed Beta Test some time this July. If all goes well, they are hoping to start their Open Beta test this December. Wow, their game progress is a little bit too fast it's kind of scaring me!"

MMOHUNTER: "Hopefully, there will be more of the game features in details surfacing. The development of Black Desert began at 2010 and goes on at present. It is presumably entering the first test in 2013 in Korea and Japan."

I have high hopes for this game, it is looking better and better with each news update.
A Tamer, Samurai and a Shapeshifting-Berserker class? PERFECT!

2015 (maybe late 2014, or early/mid 2016) North America release looks about right

Seems like a lot of these types of games are releasing or in late development now. Hopefully a few of them can really succeed in the western market. I like the combat, seems very similar to Vindictus.

My only problem... they're using a race called 'Hobbit'. It just feels like they're jumping on the bandwagon.

I would imagine that much like the professions, the translations are not perfect and these names are likely to change by the time Black Desert reaches North America.

How does this game not have more awareness? It looks like it has everything that GW2 is missing.

I will keep my hype low for this game, cause when games look so good as this one there generally have a major flaw that pushes me back. But do I would like to play it right now...

Looks pretty, but that's all I'm certain on this one. I will always be suspicious of Asian MMOs.

Plus, subscription fees = no go.

I was talking about black desert's game mechanics and functions it seems to have already from what they show that Gw2 was missing at launch and still is now almost 6 months later...so I was surprised since even though Black Desert is not theme park and is sand box, looks like it had pretty good functions and mechanics, and has a more open world rpg feel to it.

I just would of thought more people would be aware of the game. I guess it's because its in the asian market. Personally first look iv seen of the game.

Whether its any good or not well duh, yeah that requires playing it....well done for stating the obvious..oh and by the way as you don't seem to know, there is a difference between hype....and undelivered statements and broken promises...big difference. Gw2 is a good game, excuse anyone for saying it's missing some things to make it fricking awesome....

GW2, Archeage, Elders Scrolls, that one Chinese MMO that looks like Archeage, and now this game. It's a good (yet busy) time to be an MMO fan. However, I fear this flooding of the market will be bad for overall sales and there's a possibility that all these games could end up failing due to it.

First thoughts and impressions:

- Very nice and realistic graphics! It's what I would imagine GW2 the live action movie would look like (in other words, without that painterly flairish touch)

- The fact that it looks so realistic only serves to make the magical otherworldly effects look more tacky and pasted on. I feel they do not match at all.

- Mounted combat... no mounts no combat. Unless they somehow make unmounted combat worthwhile and balanced against mounted opponents...? I am very much interested to know how they are going to manage this.

- Not only is one of the race translated as Hobbit, I see what seems to be wannabe Legolas and Gandalf in the video too.

- I really, really like the samurai blader guy.

- The sieges seemed scripted, or staged somehow, but very nice. Only felt such impact in war movies.

- Very very intriguing trade and housing system, sounds like they would interplay very nicely with each other. The crafting system also seems to be region based and could make for a pretty unique crafting experience, at least to me.

You should check out star citizen, it is a RPG Space Sim but you will also be able to board ships and have first person strategy shooter, like a pirate attacking a trader and then boarding the ship afterwards. It goes from spaceship flight to inside the ships fighting fps style.

Its only just started production though. http://www.guildwars...60#entry2152268

Meh, bumped into this one again and what we know about this game so far clearly falls into the "Too good to be true"-category. I hate Asian MMOs with a fiery passion, but it looks freaking phenomenal - oddly enough, one of those things they usually do well - Combat - looks a bit choppy but it could also be the way the camera was directing it in those trailers.

Graphic looks phenomenal, the housing system makes sense and if it allows player-created furniture etc. it'd be freaking amazing.

The graphics are outstanding from that trailer. But as in most asian mmo games combat could be what I call gay dance moves.
Also it kinda reminded me of monsterhunter :/

My reaction was the same as many of you: "it's too good to be true".
I will keep my eye on this game, though I won't rise my expectations too high. My biggest reason is I have lots of bad experience with asian mmos.

I hope it'll be b2p, or maybe (just maybe) subscription-based. I won't ever try more F2p games. They usually have a bad community and the cash shop is full of p2w items.

Well it certainly looks good, but as others have said may not be all it's cracked up to be when released.

Anyway I'm ever the optomist so will be giving it a fair go.

Sooner or later there's going to be a game that beats GW2, there may even be games that beat it now for some of you.

It's nice to see more MMOs diverging from typical combat. Hopefully once this becomes the norm, it won't be so much of a selling point so the games can focus on the idea of compelling content (Looking at you, TERA). This game looks...I dunno relatively interesting? I'd like to see more along the lines of what I'll ACTUALLY be doing, PVE-wise, in the game (rather than a laundry list of features). Also I really and truely despise the "human, elf, dwarf" fantasy tropes for races (Giant and hobbit are by no means a divergence from this formula). It's a boring and lazy approach to the design of a fantasy world, filled with races that everyone will know and expect how to act. I've come to the point where race design can be a make or break point for me, and this game would have to show me something pretty spectacular for me to keep my interest.

yeah pretty much. I don't trust asian mmos especially sub based ones. At least cash shop ones if you have got the $$ you can make the grind make easier on yourself. As it is I'm waiting for FF14's reborn to make it's apperence I'm still not even sure I'll sub that game either.

Cool, but looks boring.

Um they already have them. Plantside 2.

Elder scrolls really does look interesting especially their group play...at the same time as you said I'm not sure I want to spend the next few years trying out all these games. I'll at least check out any of the free to play ones, but yeah subs will have to really grab my attention before I consider it.

necro' this, because this game actually deserve the attention. and there is new gameplay footage to this.

gw2, even if you're changing a lot of things to make it appealing this month, it was nice knowing you gw2...you and i just didn't understood each other that well.

this game actually shows you what action combat is about. most housewife's would probably disagree with me and rather stick to a slower pace combat than this...to each their own.

combat is nice, the camera shake is not so nice. From all of the sites it is the number 1 complaint. They will lose a lot of people playing if they don't have an option to turn it off. It would literally give me a headache just watching the video.

speaking of getting physical sick of dizzy-game-effects...
i played a lot of gw2 pvp (bear rank) repeatedly without any side-effects, until last year. now i can't even play one game and get noxious; my eyes feel bulged and my brain seems stressed. either i have changed or the game has an effect that is causing it, i lean towards old-age.

the shaking effect does add to the experience and that is what it's only good for; creating that sense of engagement.
i imagine you can make use of this shaking effect more intelligently; once you've been 'struck' by the shaking-effect it should definitely lessen the longer you stay in combat and until you encounter a significant stronger opponent it should shake once again.
but a simple disable option would be nice too.

edit: adding another video of their character creation, which looks like it has enough freedom, but probably not too much to make hideous looking barbies.
