How did you find out about or get into guild wars.

For me it started when almost all of my friends were playing WOW. They wanted me to get it so i went to Game Stop to do so. (this was before i found out that there was a subscription fee) and when i did find out i said "its not worth it" and never got the game. At the time I wanted an mmorpg to get into and have a singular game to bide most of my free time when I did not feel like doing anything productive but I did not want to have to pay a subscription fee. Most of the free to play mmorpgs at the time seemed pretty dumb. I stumbled upon a guild wars trailer (and had a friend that was in the same boat i was) so i showed it to him, he thought it was cool but I blew the game off right away after seeing the trailer. My friend ended up getting it when it came out. I played it, thought it was cool, got it. He stopped playing it after a little while but I have been hooked on it ever since.

If you would like share your stories about how you got into a game that went from just another random mmorpg to what it is today.

GW2: Was huge fan of GW.

GW1: Some friends who that I played a lot of D2 with all betrayed it and went for WoW. I wanted to do the same, but I was too economical to want to pay a subscription fee. I then heard one of them say a non-subscription game was coming out, so I checked it out and ended up buying the game within the first week of its existence. I never regretted it Though of course, these days I play the sequel (and alas, growing up gives me limited time to do so).

I was looking for a new RPG-ish type game with cooperative play.  I looked at SWTOR at the time it was just coming out, and it looked cool, but it had a subscription fee.  I looked at Diablo 3 as well.  About a year ago a friend mentioned GW2.  I wasn't really familiar with it but read up on it, and watch gameplay videos when they came out from the media weekends, and was hooked.  Pre-purchased to get into the first beta, played every subsequent beta, and was totally hooked.

The friend who mentioned it bought it too.  Haven't got any of our other friends to buy it yet, despite their interest.  Did get two of them into the guest weekend though.

I was looking for something to play online but I didn't have a job at the time so subscriptions were out of the question. Guild wars it was.

I saw the box for the original guild wars on the shelf at best buy.  The last game I played was diablo 2...and I liked how guild wars also didn't have a subscription fee...

I didn't get hooked at first, played a few other games.  But after I came back from my first deployment I ended up abusing the game...logged over 5000 hours chasing titles and stuff.  I ended up deleting all my characters and luckily haven't gotten sucked into a game that bad since.

Got guild wars 2 because I liked the first one, but only played casually for a short time.

It's been so long, I've forgotten how I first learned of it.  I think it had to do with no monthly subs, but I can't remember where I learned about it.

GW1 - I'm in the same boat as Winterclaw. It's been so long I can't remember how I learned about it - this was like 8 years ago... lolz. I do know it was pure random, but not sure what I was looking for , or why I was looking for what I was. I did play beta weekends for it and was hooked.

GW2 - obviously followed since it was announced.

I never played GW1 (I do recall seeing it in stores though many years ago but didn't pay attention at the time), but I heard about GW2 on the SWTOR pre release forums back in 2009. From what I remember the thing that piqued my interest was "no holy trinity".

I was at a freinds house many years ago and asked him what this game was (the game being GW1) and I made a character, thought it was cool, and have been playing on and off ever since. I had never played any game like that before and it was really really cool.

I found Prophecies while randomly checking a game store and bought it out of curiosity.
Turns out the game was just launched and played it for 7 years or so.
I played almost all other MMOs out there as well but no one lasted more than a month or two - I'm simply not into those kind of MMOs where the goal is farming gear and playing gear/RNG-based PvP.
They make me feel like they want you to be a hamster running on a wheel while you pay monthly fees, well * that.

I stopped playing GW1 I think it was 5-6 months before GW2 release; I left my then girlfriend and the whore dumped my game codes so I couldn't recover the account.
Not that I really cared tho, I was done with GW1 anyways, and since no expansions were coming but GW2 was underway I did not need it.
In that timespan I gave WoW a chance (1 month, lvl 80, game was a complete joke that seemed designed around very mentally retarded people, I quit disgusted), also played Diablo 3 and quit in a week as it seems once the game is complete you're meant to repeat the same exact stuff over and over, almost tempted to try Darkfall again but common sense saved me money, then GW2 released and here we are.

Wasn't there a Ranger box too? I had the mesmer box.

I started GW1 at release. I played with some IRL friends that I had played DAoC with. I remember that we all found out about it and brought it up to each other at the same time, but I have no clue how I initially heard about the game. I hadn't really had the resources to really follow PC games at that age so I wasn't actively looking for one.

I followed GW2 from the initial announcement.

My sisters, long distance call told me she's sending me this cool game, wants me to try it out, first thing i learn about the game was the attribute system is not "locked" you can change it a million times! then i got it in the mail as a birthday present.

It was cynn and mhenlo.  Eve and a generic warrior, and I guess a ranger and the mesmer.  No aiden or devona though.

And even till now, it still brings back the hair raising rush I felt then, as well as the beta hype feeling that swept me away much later on.

I'd say my experience was rather similar to the OP's. A few of my friends were raving about WoW, and not wanting to pay $15 a month, I discovered GW.

Though before Guild Wars I played a few free to play korean MMO's. My friends simply adore the grind. 100's of levels and what not. I never really made it past level 30 or so before I quit.

So when I heard about Guild Wars, and it's glorious level 20 cap, I couldn't resist. I also always hated allocating attribute points over dozens of levels. Many games offer re-stat scrolls, though only in their cash shop. GW1's attribute system basically sealed the deal for me.

Nothing too special. I overheard two of my friends talking about a game called Guild Wars, way back in 2005. I got interested and wanted to know more. By that point I had 0 experience with online games, the only thing I did, was play WarCraft 3 online and I sucked at it (played maybe 3-4 matches). I went over to one of those friends and he showed me the game. It didn't look that good, but I thought I might as well give it a try. Atleast there were no subscription fees and no endless level grind like in the wretched WoW.

I bought it, played for a few weeks and eventuall got bored. It wasn't until Nightfall was released (I skipped Factions at first), that I got hooked. Elona was exactly what I was looking for, middle eastern/african setting, good story line and characters (Palawa Joko <3), an awesome profession (the dervish), interesting lore and great side quests. I pretty much played it until Eye of the North was released, bought Factions soon after and then started PvP, at which I got fairly good at.

Of course, before EotN was released there was this article in the PC Games (german gaming magazine) about GW2. I was hyped into oblivion and back. It looked so cool. And I stayed close to the project until it's release and unlike some people on this forum, I still think it's a pretty damn good MMO, next to GW1 the best I have ever played.

After years in UO I got fed up with EA butchering this once great and legendary game. Also didn't feel like paying every month anymore. At that time GW1 came out and I knew some players from UO who bought it, so I thought I give it a chance.

beta tested guildwars & got it when it went live quitting wow at the time.  I'd flip flop between the 2 for awhile.

Back when GW1 was about to come out I was sorely tempted to get it but at the time my life was hectic and my time for games too limited.  I nearly bought it a couple years later but relented as I was still time crunched.

So I missed that train.  But when I heard they were making a sequel that was pretty much going to cast aside many MMO conventions I have grown sick of I said hell let's try it.  It helped I know several others who play it.

I got into GW1 in 2005 from my dad, actually. My brother (who is 12 years my elder) got it for my dad right around launch. I'd seen my dad play it a lot throughout that summer, and he told me about how the attributes and skills worked. It had me interested, cause up until then the only other rpg I had played was D2, also with my dad. So he bought me an account and I started playing in fall of 2005. Was hooked on it and played actively all the way up until 2010.

Followed GW2 from its announcement and got it the weekend it launched.

hubby got the game (gw1) while I was still working overseas...when I came home (aug 05) he was playing it all day and night.....and convinced me we could play it together. STILL am playing it almost 8 years later.
Since then, hubby's computer died (almost done rebuilding it now), so I have been playing guildwars with just my heroes for most of the last year.

Missed the whole GW1 train, didn't have any friends who played it so didn't really even bother to check. Played WoW since 2006, I considered GW2 when it came out but then again I didn't have any friends already playing it so I thought why bother, besides every other MMORPG I had tried besides WoW had disappointed me immensely (LotR, Aion, SWTOR). Then by some accident ended up watching a few videos with my best friend on a LAN night on the side while playing WoW, ended up reading quite a bit about it and decided to get it together with him. Ended my WoW subscription quite fast after that, and still enthralled by GW2.

A Planetside 2 dev was doing random beta key giveaways for her game while twitch streaming GW2. So I pretty much spent the entire weekend watching her play while waiting to win a drawing. Then there was that free weekend they had. I missed the $30 sale back in December, but I jumped on the $40 sale just recently.

My story is really weird. I started because my exboyfriend said he would not talk to me unless I talked to him on Guild Wars. I hated the game with a passion. I found it boring and stupid! Then I purchased factions because I really wanted to be a ritualist. She ended up being my main. Stayed for the PvP.

A student of mine found out I was playing Neverwinter and recommended GW right after Factions came out. I've always been a huge Asian theme fan so I tried it. Loved it and haven't stopped playing since. Love GW2 just as much but would really like to see Cantha or at least Canthan style items (hint hint).
