Elementalist seems to suit your needs. If soloing, you may have to play a bit more passive or protective than you normally would, but that's what you get from light armor professions. They are without a doubt the most mobile class, and have the most AOE with the staff skills. Needless to say, this AOE is ranged so can be used in WvW easily.

I would suggest mesmer. You have some nice teleporting abilities, great survival thanks to clones, range up to.1200, useful pretty much in any circumstances.

But swiftness is rather rare on mesmers, AND they fail miserably at AoE/DE's (at least until Level... 40? 50?)... and until then, they are rather difficult to properly play solo.

Ele sounds more like it'd suit your needs, though many people say that Ele's are rather difficult to play and rather underpowered until you make use of frequent attunement-switching and generally a higher level of skill.

Guardian is more easy-mode, does have access to enough swiftness (staff/shouts), does have AoE (Hammer/Greatsword) and is easy to play solo. But he lacks real long-range options (he does have Scepter/Focus and/or Staff, but range really isn't his specialty :D ).

Warrior is as easy as it gets (or so I heard, never tested myself), has good Melee and Range(Single Target-Rifle, AoE-Longbow), more than enough AoE through Longbow, Greatsword, Hammer, I guess access to swiftness too through some banner and/or shouts (a warrior player should confirm that, I don't really know)...

Ranger has one really nice AoE ability named Barrage I think, and can AoE through traps, solo-ability is rather good as well because of his pets, is unmatched in range (apart from traited Engi), also has swiftness options.

Engineer has VERY easy access to permanent Swiftness (10 Points in the last traitline, choose speedy kits, pick MedKit as Healing Skill and switch to it and instantly out of it every 5 seconds), has gorgeous range AoE (1500 range grenades once traited, 1200 range before), or melee AoE through Bombs if so desired... but is more difficult to play especially solo (especially the grenades require some twitch skill, as you have no auto-aimed autoattack, every single grenade wants to be aimed manually)

Necros have good Ranged AoE through their staff as well, shouldn't die too often through large health pool and death shroud, are one of the easier classes to play solo as Minion Masters, don't know how quick they can move though.

Can't say anything about AoE Capabilities of thieves, they are definately fast-moving, but I don't really know more about them.

I don't really know what you mean by fun abilities, I guess everyone has some, while Mesmer and Engineer have some more than others :D

True mesmers don't have access to swiftness easily and as for mob tagging, they are amazing at it as of.level 40 like most others. If OP wants to be awesome from level one then take a warrior, otherwise take a more interesting character like mesmer or elementalist. Although in my opinion elementalist lack survivability compared to the other two casters. Damage is good and all but, what good is damage if you're down all the time.

To be honest, you're asking for the best of everything in one package. If such a profession existed there would be no use for any others.

I'd suggest Guardian, as it offers most of what you want and is still casual friendly. Second place would be Elementalist, but expect a far greater dying rate until you get good at avoiding most damage.

On a sidenote, Guardian are far from good range fighters, but I've come to appreciate the scepter a lot lately and the damage output is actually quite solid.

Ranger has good aoe, interesting abilities, one of the longest range in the game, they can easily stack swiftness with different builds, and pets let you solo like a boss.

I would have to say engineer:

1) Access to permanent swiftness through the use of Speedy Kits Trait (10 point in last tree).
2/3)Grenadier trait at 30 in explosives is 1500 range and 25 stacks of vulnerability or Bomb Kit if you get into melee range.
4)The engineer is the master of knockback more so than the guardian and we have so many slows kitting is so simple, even more so with permanent swiftness.
5)With runes of the centuar you can keep permanent swiftness up on a small group of allies. Also with med kit/ healing turret and elixir gun you have some decent support.

But all this does require good timing and skill to pull off effectively. if you're looking for more face-roll, go a guardian.

Go necro!

Spectral Walk + warhorn + signet of locust = always running fast

Conditionmaners with epidemic are second to none for sustained aoe for events and anything with clusters of mobs.  Even things like Plixx when they were farmed were doable if you knew where mobs were spawning and prepared for your bleeds and spread the moment things spawned. (get credit on everything even when you were partyless)

Conditionmancers use scepter and staff, which means you get a 900 and 1200 range weapon, with deathshroud's 900 range.

Conditionmancers in rabid gear are damn hardy, or a minion master is cleric gear is near unkillable (lupicus tried, he failed several times)

Spectral grasp is a yank spell, chills and fears available to necros cause all sorts of mayhem for people trying to jump and frolic on the edges of cliffs.

Come to the dark side, we even have tea cozies.

Even though its become somewhat less popular of late, the Ranger class can easily meet all those needs.

-  Traps provide excellent AoE in events (especially with bunched up foes) and several have pretty short recharges
-  Swiftness/Quickness is easy to obtain, and there is a signet that grants a permanent 25% move increase
-  Soloing is a piece of cake (I soloed map completion in all of Orr on my ranger... BEFORE the made Orr easier); your pet can serve as a nice tank in even the most difficult situations (let the pet tank while you grab a chest, mine a node, commune with a skill point, etc. It even works to tank vets/champs)
-  Long range with longbow and pretty good range with shortbow.  Easy to cause conditions and knock back (for griefing in jumping puzzle if you prefer)
-  Ranger Great Sword can be a LOT of fun, especially with quickness, though the dmg is not what it used to be.

Elementalist would also be a good choice, but you might find you have to work harder when soloing.

Um...using minions/pets against Lupicus is a terrible idea.

Didn't use a MM build, just a well/support build with cleric gear.

They are pretty much the worst aoe profession in DEs..

To OP. I would say elementalist. To be of most use you have to be switching attunements alot and move around alot to.

Im prabably bias on this (because its my all time fave class from ANY MMO) but the engineer

2 movement speed skills so itssorta lacking there, but ithe class has access to weapons wich no other class can use (in form of kits) the class is 100% range unless you use the Tool Kit or Elixir X eliet skill, the class is sortof a "jack of all trades" class.... it can do more or less anything but lacks in tank-ability due to not having any melee weps or truely strong heals, where engineer realy shines is its raw DPS against larg mobs as Pistols and flamethrower's basic attack is AoE, Grenades are 100% AoE (but you need to manualy target the ground) ontop of that they are remenicent of the GW1 Ritualists a they can lay down turrets (spirits) that the enemy can target

as for my personal taists, I love using Pistol/shield (get some cap-america action going) with a flamethrower, and Elixer S (the purple one) and Battle Roar(charr race skill) utilitys for the DPS boost, and Legion support for the added "targets" and DPS

Melee ranger. Yes, I said it. You'll be flipping around all over the place, so some kinetic awareness is needed, but the trap-fest (Flame Trap <3) and Whirling Axe are insane.

Of course, I don't think anyone else compares to a necromancer's Epidemic or a staff elementalist in terms of AoE.
