I've been having trouble deciding between which main weapon to use in WvW. I know that each are equally good, but I'm curious to know which weapon is better in different scenarios. For example, which weapon is better for zerging, roaming, defending, etc. I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision between Greatsword or Hammer.

Hi,

In short, GS is meant for quick bursts of damage, Hammer is 360

°

AOE 24/7 and utility.
Due to Guardian role in WWW, I'd go with the hammer for zerging, but it's a matter of personal taste.

Hammer is good in crowd control, you can bring both, and in combo with KD from hammer switch to GS and HB(but while HB you are making yourself more vulnerable). I would suggest you, as I roll that in WvW, shield+ axe/sword and  hammer, I find for myself really fun to play! :) You can help in zergs or roam solo if you want action.

they both do different things and often i will run with both actually. but if i had to choose, i'd go with the hammer as well. there are times when i wish i had the GS on me, like if an enemy likes fleeing a lot, since you get a pull, as well as leap. but overall, hammer i feel more fun.

hammer offers more CC imo, RoW too much fun on unsuspecting enemies. also, from personal experience, MB is harder to react to (dodge / block, etc) compared to WW. argubly the two "hard hitting" skills if you will. plus added protection never hurts when you get the chain off. then blast for AoE retal (works well with AH if you're using that)

I love the hammer but from my WvW experience it is only viable if you are with a group and focusing attacks. With the hammer you are a sitting duck in comparison to the GS. Running with a focussed group I switch to hammer.

The mobility of the GS is just awesome in WvW and allows you to be very flexible determining your own outcome. You can nearly always get out of a tight spot with the GS movement skills.

Why chose? Get both.

Judge's Intervention -> Ring of Warding -> Mighty Blow -> change to greatsword -> Whirling Wrath = Welcome to the circle of death.

It works wonders in skirimishes and zerg fight. On 1v1 you just need to outplay the enemy with block and dodge and you should be able to deal enough massive damage to kill anyone.

Both. The main reason to replace one of them could be that Shield is awesome in duels (specially against Thieves) and ,cracking enemies in narrow spaces as bridges, tunnels, etc., but outside those circumstances the sinegies between Hammer and Greatsword are too good to not use both -in a ofensive, small to mid sized, roaming group of players-..

I'm asking because I want to make either a Foefire's Essence or Foefire's Power to go with my armor. But from the looks of the responses, I think I'll go towards Greatsword.

I have to agree. I more and more use both. The greatsword has strong mobility and burst damage, but the hammer has strong CC and if an enemy goes toe-to-toe it is really hard to kill you with permanent Protection. The two weapons also seem to compliment each other very well. GS binding blade > Hammer RoW>MB. Or against fleeing opponents Hammer's Zealot's Embrace >GS leap> WW.
