...was actually the endgame?
Yes, remember it was the initial idea that the entire world would be the endgame?
Let's pretend that tomorrow a new patch blasts GW2 with something like this.

Once you are lvl 80, a number of special, "hardmode" events/JPs would spawn in old maps and gives you a token (once a day per map of course), that work like current dungeon tokens; you accumulate a bunch and then throw them in the mystic forge along with some gold sinking items and get an ascended item.
The result would be that you'd see people all over Tyria hunting for events, doing champions and jumping puzzles.

Not sure about you, but to me the world of Tyria is the best endgame one could ever dream of.
It's big, it's varied (goes from snow to grass to autumn environments to lava) and it's fun..
If it was just as rewarding and endgame-worthy at lvl 80 I'd feel like a kid in a chocolate factory.

Seeing as downscaling has been made more realistic I can see this happening.
A swarm of veteran Centaurs in Kessex hills with a Champ leading them, burning down the land for instance - for leveling players they would give exp, to us they would give some tokens we can use for gear.

What is your stance, would you love this, or would you prefer GW2 to continue toward instanced content?

i like that idea maybe give the leveling player a decent reward that they could gather as they lvl for some good armor when they hit 40 to do dungeons

I`m going grey haired here waiting for new maps (and new stuff to do) !
If we look at the Tyria map we can easily see that we have opened (for now) only about 45% maps.....
This just leads me to believe that game was not even half way done when Anet published it, and all they do now (throw at us) just feels like bandaid on gaping wound (makes no sense and feel out of place) !

btw i like your idea Red Falcon, hope some developers start to think like fans do !

I'd love to see this personally. I love playing in the open world but when I hit 80 on my Thief I kind of burned out rather quickly on Orr. I'd love for every zone to have some cool unique challenges for max level players.

Exploration in GW2 is annoyingly stale at the moment so anything that gives extra incentive to roam around is a plus in my book. I'd really like to see it expanded upon.

while what you say could be true to play devil's advocate a bit what if the dragons rising made those zones unpassable lore wise they  have so much space from the dragons and the time jump that it isn't possible to predict what they will do to expand the world

I would like added content that is instanced, but would definitely like to see the world changed to be "end game" worthy also

I think they'd just add maps at the edge of the current world, like open up passages to the crystal desert and eventually other continents/nations (I'm looking at you Cantha and Elona), rather than change a lot of the newbie maps to fit end game.

Well, the problem I'd see with this would be that they obviously want to make everything in the game appeal to casuals and noobs as well, so "hardcore events" spawning in lower level zones, which would probably mean lowlevels couldn't compete in them would be right out.

Also, concerning map coverage: filling out the map is obviously intended for addons and the like, so I wouldn't exactly call that definite proof of the game being unfinished etc. That point goes to the state of pvp and skill balance issues. =)

I would like anything that makes PVE rewarding and keeps me out of Orr.  The problem with this idea is that you now made Hard Mode so that means that the soft mode people couldn't join in.  The world is dying rapidly as it is.  If you split the community this will not remedy this, but would make it worse.  If you could bring the level 80s back and give them rewards that would be awesome as I hate dungeons/fractals and PuGs.  As far as the map goes I assume those are areas to be opened during paid expansions (assuming the game survives long enough to see expansions released).

While I personally feel the world of tyria is already the end game, it certainly is for me at least as I spend way more time in the lowlevel / midlevel zones then I do in max level zones, yours is a good idea. You might be happy to know that something like you propose might already be coming:

https://www.guildwar...e-months-ahead/

"We need to ensure there is a volume of content to foster this strong community/social bond. To that end, we’re working on adding new types of content to the game in early 2013 that will allow guilds to go on missions together. Some of these missions may be content designed specifically for the guild to accomplish within certain constraints or time requirements, while others will see the creation of new content by a guild/s everyone in the world can experience."

Beyond that the daily / monthly achievement also works a bit like that. No need to do the achivement in a specific map, you can play in any map you choose.

I want all zones to be interesting at max level, but I dont really want them to be different for max level players or content that only the max level players can see. The selling point of downleveling is players of all levels experiencing the game together. To that end I see no reason for special rewards from the same content only if you are 80. Those extra rewards if implemented should be given to the level 30s that fought alongside you just the same.

It could be done by simply putting two servers per map, one normal mode and one hard mode.

But apparently Anet are too busy releasing new aimless content instead of refining the things they already have.

Actually there was a map released somewhere a while back of the whole planet, it didn't go into a whole lot of detail but it showed the main land formations & what we currently have & can access is like 15-20%.

Assuming they keep the player base & money coming in they could easily release several new large continents worth of maps over 4-8 expansions.

Given ANet's current stance on improving what is already in game, rather  than expanding and adding stuff elsewhere, I think something like this is plausible. However, as someone above pointed out, making any kind of "hard mode" would just mean that normal mode players would be left behind, splitting the community further. Instead I think rewards should be added in some form simply for doing events and other content.

Really the main problem with the idea of "the whole world is the endgame" is that there's no carrot worth chasing in areas other than Orr, Frostgorge, dungeons, and fractals. The recent patch did a bit to fix this, but not enough imo. Perhaps if there were better karma rewards, or if there were some kind of token system based on completing events and other pve content, with rewards worth working for, then we'd see more players in regular pve. As it is, once I got 100% world completion on my main character, all I do with him now is dungeons and fractals. It isn't worth the time for me to go and do events or anything.

You actually want people to go out in the OPEN WORLD? What madness is this!

Don't you like flying laps of Orgrimmar/Stormwind/Lion's Arch waiting for your Dungeon/Fractal group to pop?

To add to this... I would actually like to see mini-instances pop up at random in various areas of the map. They'd be short in duration - imagine something akin to Diablo 3's random mini dungeons or Oblivions oblivion gates, or maybe something like randomized (but consistent with the zone) mini-fractals within the game world - but sharp, with intense combat and very difficult. Since they're instanced, they don't interfere with the more casual open world, and in addition the randomness of their spawning would encourage world exploration.

What I like about this suggestion is that I think it stands a pretty good chance of being what Anet actually has in mind. Its more a matter of how, when and how effective they end up being with it.

It's nice to know you guys would want this too.

Honestly Tyria is the most breath-taking environment I have so far seen in a MMO game.
If endgame was based off those zones it would be very awesome for me.

The initial goal was that the world was in turmoil and we'd get to turn the tides of the world by playing events.
I'd take this over classic dungeon raiding any day really. It's immersive and fun.

Anet has stated recently that they are focusing on adding content to existing zones (unless my ability to read the convoluted Anet statements has declined). Hopefully, things like this are going to be the focus of these additions.

I have honestly been quite disappointed that there isn't anything in the game as grand as the "end of beta weekend" corrupted battle in the Charr starter zone. Massive zone wide invasions well beyond the underwhelming changes that currently occur were things that I had hoped for. The ideas you propose have the same effect, to bring life and actual purpose to the entire map.

The main considerations are that the added features must be 1) fun, 2) rewarding, and 3) different.

Well i`ve done story with multiple chars (8 different races, paths....) it feels kind of "cheaper" mimic because very soon it flows into general story (same for everyone) !
I hope they introduce something real new very soon, dragons or no dragons......

That`s a possibility but i thought that Tyria will be map "numero uno" and every other expansion new continent like in GW1, maybe i`m wrong but i wouldn`t personally like to pay up for more map reveal....maybe i`m old fashioned but "expansion" in my terms is expanding over world we already have, not just opening maps that should have been there in first place !

The idea is good. I was going to suggest an "Explorable Token" myself.

I think it'll be even better if:
- The token would be called "Wayfarer's token".
- Each single non-event champion on each Explorable zone would become like resource nodes, and once a moth each will drop a bag of wondrous goods that will contain 1-5(depending on difficulty of the champion) of those tokens, plus a random upgrade, a drop of karma and a small bag of coins. So traveling around killing random champions would be more than a waste of time.
- The end chest in explorable mini-dungeons would also provide one of those bags once a month.
- The first time a champion is killed or an mini-dungeon chest is opened by any character of the account, it will give a "bag of Marvelous goods" instead the Wondrous one, that will give 5-10 tokens instead. So hunting every single champion would have some merit too
- Sometimes, a golden heart 'resets' becoming 'Silver hearts'. If you go there, you can fill the heart again, but this time you must do at least one of each of the things you can do to fill the heart, instead one again and again, and if events fill the heart, at least one of those events. Re-filling a silver heart also provides several tokens.
- To exchange those tokens, you have to find the long lost descendant of Nicholas the Traveler. She will appear in a random place each week. It can be anywhere, including instances like at the entrance of a dungeon or a home instance.
It would turn out that he and Mary Malone were quite close, and a kid was born while he was away, traveling. And would have been rescued much later. Then that kid had a girl, and that somehow learned about her ancestor. She would love the idea of traveling like that, and would star travels on her own, the first one being to the graves of Nicholas and Yakkington in Ebonhawke.
