FYI.  This is not a post about the cost of precursors.  It is a general discussion about the reality of obtaining a Legendary weapon.

I have been debating if I really want to obtain a Ledgendary weapon for the last two months.  I have played since pre-release weekend.  I play on average 3 to 4 hours a day.  I have 7 alts at level 80, 2 alts with 100% world completion, and 1 alt finished the personal story (2 more waiting for a group to help finish Arah), about 75% to Dungeon Master, and logged some time in WvW .  So as you can see, I am a bit more than a casual player.  Here is my delima on owning a Ledgendary (other then precursor).

It's for one character! Right now my guardian is my main alt.  However, for the first three months my Warrior was my main.  After getting 100% world completion and finishing my story on my Warrior, I switched the Guaridan to try something new.  I am now 100% world completion and 99.99% completed with the personal story on the Guardian.  I am worried I may switch to another alt soon. If I don't stay with just one alt, then I may never fully enjoy getting the weapon, or feel forced to stay with that one character.

Does anyone else have doubts of owning a Ledgendary Weapon other than costs?

If you have a Ledgendary weapon, do you enjoy it as much as you thought you would?  What was your main reason for obtaining one?

I had everything ready to make Twilight. Realised I don't want it. I don't play my guardian anymore. It'd have been a waste. If the elementalist had a decent staff one that wasn't all rainbows and ivory, I'd have probably aimed for that.

If they release more legendaries that I'd actively use, I'll give it a second look. I like how some of them look and it's another goal to aim towards really. Right now, I'm not that interested.

Well, at this moment I am in the process of obtaining Twilight for my mesmer. Did i have my uncertainties? sure, but that it is for one character only is not stopping me in any way since i always fall back to my mesmer. at the beginning i was not so sure about it but started to collect mystic clovers anyway. as soon as i had 77+. I got hooked to finishing it.

If you are not so sure yet, start with the gifts of fortune and mastery. same for every legendary.

The Legendary is the ultimate prize in GW2 not to mention it is the only thing that will always be max.

I am aiming for one. I say aiming because I refuse to change away from the play style I enjoy or spend a boat load of real money on one.

100% this.  Anything I have to do to go outside of having fun in the game like farming a certain enemy to get a type of drop or farming karma or farming certain chests for a legendary or farming money to dump rares/exotics into the toilet, is outside my realm.

I have the Gift of Exploration and the Gift of Battle, I have two dozen obby shards but that's really about it.  I also am waiting for them to release some different ones and waiting for a time where I have all of the materials readily at my disposal without having to spend 100s of gold to get them.

I've never been a big fan of weapon skins, so I don't have much interest in a legendary weapon.

However, if they ever introduce legendary armors, and the skins are actually ones I find attractive (unlike all the trenchcoats, ginormous skirts and assorted rags GW2 currently features), I'll definitely try to get them.

I made 2 legendaries before 99% of the playerbase had 1. Made me feel finished with the game, and I ended up quitting less than a month after. (This was back in October).

I'm more interested in getting one of the cool-looking pre-cursors, than I am in the grind necessary to get a legendary.    The ridiculous amount of ecto and obby shards required is a turn off to me.

I definitely want Bifrost and maybe a few others, but I haven't been taking it seriously since completing big projects like that makes me feel like I sort of reached the end.

Too much for too little, for me. I realized the only reason I wanted Twighlight is because it has the closest thing to any sort of motion blur.

I feel about legendaries the same way that I felt about Obsidian Armor when I first started playing GW1: Its mostly a sign of people who wasted a whole lot of time.  Don't get me wrong, they are both neat cool things to have (I eventually did get Obby armor in GW1 myself) but the time commitment and amount of grind required is so enormous (to me, a grown adult with a full time job and kid, etc.) that I likely wouldn't actively pursue it until the game leaves me with nothing else to do.

I am casually working towards a Legendary. If I get a precursor drop, then maybe i'll put some effort into it. I *will* eventually have one, but I see the potential for burnout and grief go up the harder I work on it.

If you're not ready to commit to the game then don't even start it.
Frankly? Anyone can hit max 80 on as many alts as he pleases and get 100% world completion, that's peanuts that req. no skill at anything. Besides getting things done faster due to better understanding of the game's mechanics.

Legendary require a substantial amount of resources that shows your true dedication to the game by improving the prestige of your account.
Haters will hate, but most people will be amazed by your feat.

You can still transfer the weapon at the loss of the legendary tier to another character. Should cost you the amount a lv80 exotic of that weapon type.

It's nice to have one, but I'm just playing the game to enjoy it, not necessarily working towards a legendary. I'm betting on NOT having a legendary even when it hits the end of the game's life cycle. It is just too much work for me. I'd rather work at my job and play the game than work in the game, if you get my drift.

I don't have a main, so the concept of extremely expensive soulbound items in general doesn't appeal to me. Also, I prefer equipment that doesn't turn my characters into walking christmas trees.

No need to have one.

Have a guildmate who is considering obtaining one just to sell it, though. Most of us don't like the models or their effects.

Funny this came up today, because just yesterday I was up leveling my latest alt in Timberline, trying to do an escort event, someone playing a big beefy norn warrior with a legendary greatsword must have thought he deserved attention or envy because besides his immature chat, he continued to swing the dang thing around before/after combat.  My screen was covered in black and red swirls which was one of the most annoying thing I've had to deal with in a fight, which is saying a LOT.

Made me glad I didn't have a weapon that could create issues like that in a dungeon.

And no, that's not envy. That reaffirmed my decision to not get one.

I think those players that truly want to have one, and have worked hard to get them should enjoy them. :)

There are other players (such as myself and my guildmates) who do not care for any of the models.

Glad the community has the maturity to accept both views.

.

If legendaries were account bound, I suspect this thread might have some different responses. Maybe not.

Personally I think legendary's were not ready for launch and never have been since. So many skins are better and some dont even give legendary achievement after months now..

The whole legendary system was poorly implemented into the game.

Then they made the added mistake of not having legendary's account bound so anyone can buy one off the TP, or they can buy one off gold sellers for 200-300 bucks....

Also means gold sellers can control the pre cursor and legendary markets which harms the average player.

It's something Anet need to get on top of and so far im not impressed with the small legendary changes already.

Can't say I'm worried about it being character-specific.  Barring drastic changes to the current system for acquiring a legendary, chances are I'll only ever acquire one (if any), and I know fully well I want it to be one specific weapon for my main that I've spent the majority of the first six months of GW2 playing.  There are plenty of other awesome weapon skins to equip my four alts, while my personal favorite can get the special toy.  Only real question is if I'll be able to dedicate the time/effort required to actually obtain it.  For now, simply accumulating gold/karma/tokens/ectos/etc will suffice.

I constantly switch between alts, though I'm not as dedicated as you (I only have three 80s). This month, I love my Guardian. Two months ago I was crazy about my Mesmer. And before that, I was still dedicated to my Ranger. I figured I would aim for one of the Greatswords since all of my 80s could use it. But honestly, if I crafted a legendary, I'd probably just sell it and use the gold to gear up all 8 of my characters.

It's hard to justify the cost and commitment getting one legendary takes... And as beautiful as Sunrise is, the Fractal Greatsword fits my Guardian's look much better.

there are 2 I have ever considered getting: juggernaut and predator.  I won't get predator cause the only class I would ever use a rifle on full time is the engineer, and I'm always in kits on my engy, making it a waste overall imo.  Juggernaut I'm working for to get on my guardian because I like the chrome effect it adds and I actually use the hammer on him.

The rest either have horrible effects or just look bad to me, greatswords especially included despite so much apparent love for twilight.

Am I actively working towards juggernaut right now?  Not really.  I'm doing clovers and saving my t6 mats, but it's not like I'm actively farming them or anything.  But I realized a long time ago that this is more like a 6 month project than anything due to the ridiculous costs and amount of RNG required, which is the major flaw in the legendary design that I fight myself with every day I load up the game.  I could easily purge my mats I have saved for juggernaut and craft level and gear my mesmer in all exotics, finish getting exotics on a few other alts, and get t3 cultural armor for my guardian.  I don't because I figure by the time anet releases the precursor scavenger hunt that will be close to the only thing left on my list to get for a legendary anyways, but if I was just starting now I probably would change my mind immediately simply due to the costs and amounts of the materials needed.

I'm still plenty content with my Jotun greatsword.  That said, I can't deny that I'm slowly collecting the materials without really focusing on it.  Maybe someday I'll get one.

I want to get a legendary about as much as I want to count every individual grain of sand on the surface of the planet. In other words, I refuse to begin either task for similar reasons: both offer only monotonous repetition of tasks I don't want to do.

So what number are you at right now?

On topic: I like some of the skins of the legendaries but I know I would never subject myself to the grind needed to get all of them. I'm passively making Sunrise atm. Passively because I find the skill point and karma grind to be unbearable. I've spent a lot of karma on Orr exotics to give to alts that I've deleted later. On the skill point front (and Gift of Exploration), well, I love exploring the maps but seeing them so deserted is disheartening so the furthest I have gotten to world completion is 64%. Honestly, I don't think the gold needed to make it is too bad. Just casually playing for 1 month (and this includes playing the TP here and there) netted me my Gift of Fortune and about half of my Gift of Sunrise. No active grinding for money/mats during that month. I remember trying my hand at charged lodestone farming at Arah and after my 5th spark I logged off. If ANet ever makes world exploration appealing enough that open world activity rises to what it was like back when the game first came out, I can honestly say I'll have my Gift of Mastery soon after.

When I thought of legendary weapons, I thought of some difficult to obtain material which required hours of game play and a certain level of luck to obtain. Instead I got RNG on a legendary scale.

I don't think I'd enjoy getting 1, though I cannot really speak as I've pretty much stopped logging in to play except to catch up with 1 friend from the US.
