I've been thinking of getting back into this game or at least playing it a couple of times a week. I lasted played this back in October/November while the halloween event was going. I stopped playing due to life problems and being bored with the game.

Before i stopped playing I had already had 100% map explored with a lvl 80 guadian, I was working on getting full TA armor(had about 500 some tokens). I also had a few other characters that I was trying out that included a lvl 16 ranger, lvl 6 necro, and lvl 7 thief.
I was also trying to build up my guild which I seem to never could build it up to more than 60+ people, which also caused me to get bored because I never had a group to talk to/do stuff with.

So i was basically wondering if there is really any new cool things to do since The Lost Shore came out. If i came back would still basically mainly be grind for money or tokens? The game also seemed dead(although the times i came on were at 1 or 2 am), so is the game dead or was my timing just bad.

Other note: I still feel as GW1 a better and more fun cause of the vanquing and sc you could do compared to there is nothing in GW2 close to those to things(at least feel close to it).

yeah, I came back to this game this month. you're pretty much either 1. rerolling or 2. grinding laurels (dailies, monthlies) 3. grinding for gold

weird, though. i'm enjoying it quite a bit this month, there's practically nothing new though. but I still agree, GW1 was better by universes apart

New? well... Laurels, Fractals, changes to a bunch of classes, crazy changes in prices to everything, inflation (gold is easier to come by now), soon to be implemented guild events and what not, and next month a WvW patch.

Not much has changed, but I myself took a month break...I was bored with it all, came back and am loving it more than ever. Anet has slowly but surely, been trying to come up with enough new content and fixes to keep making this game better. :)

Not really anything since you left. Fractals are decent, but very repetitive. Daily/monthly grind are now something you should do, as they reward a new currency that is only obtainable through them. The new currency called Laurels has loot that is exclusive to them(currently a few convenience items and ascended amulet).
If the game didn't appeal to you then, then it likely won't appeal to you now.

Jump in and give it a try. I find GW2 to be a game that keeps evolving, getting better bit by bit. Whether you like the game or not at its core is a different thing, but I like the game overall and think it is heading in the right direction.

And just to mention it, you are comparing some pretty late GW1-mechanisms - vanquishing and speed clearing - to a GW2 game that only turns half a year in 13 days. Of course it is not as refined a game at this point. GW1 evolved greatly during its 5 real active years, GW2 will hopefully too.

I would have to agree with this, GW2 is a great game overall just got boring to me and although I did have GW1 since the day it came out and throughout most of the time when only prophecies out my computer would freeze and act up allowing me not to do much which im sure if it didnt freeze i would get bored of it. Im sure GW2 will get better and better as the years come.
It just seems as GW1 was more solo friendly with the heroes/hench is also why I find GW1 to better as i dont always want to be doing stuff with people

I made a pause for two months or so and am enjoying the game quite a bit again. To be fair, I had just like 50% world completion anyway, so there is always something to do for me still. Also found a nice small guild to run some dungeons with, which really helps in keeping me interested in the game.

If you enjoyed it before, just give it a try again and see for yourself if you still enjoy it. At least for me it worked, if you play it non-stop you just get burned out (but that's true for every game for me). And if not, you can just stop again, that's the good thing about the business model.

There weren't really any major content additions since the southsun cove update. Christmas event was all just temporary stuff and the january update was mostly features / fixes and the living story prelude, but there isn't much there that you can actually play that wasn't there before. They added more rewards to dailies / monthlies and rebalanced some stuff. (some changes in Orr for example)
They also changed the dungeons so you can't waypoint-zerg them anymore and there will be future updates to rebalance dungeon encounters.

End of February there will be an update to the Flame and Frost living story stuff and guild missions will be introduced, as well as further improvements on dailies (you can choose 5 out of 9 dailies to do), but there aren't too many details out yet.

On "Is the game dead?" ... it depends on the server I think. I'm on Elona Reach and it seems pretty healthy there, at least during the peak times when I usually play. Waiting for the Feb update before playing again might be a good idea, there will be lots of people who want to try out the new Living Story and Guild Missions.
