Hello.

Firstly, I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but I don't have the time or patience to filter through to find it.

It may also be something AN have confirmed to be an upcoming update, or maybe held back for an inevitable expansion, I have no idea as I stay away from AN blogs.

But now onto my point ... There's a hole in weapon types ...

We have a Sword & a Greatsword ...

... We have a Mace & a Hammer ...

... We have a Shortbow & a Longbow ...

... We have a Scepter & a Staff ...

... We have an Axe and a ... oh wait.

Yes, there is no second variant to an Axe. It would have been so simple to put an alternate variant to an Axe based weapon as such things have existed. It could be a Poleaxe, a Battleaxe or just a bigger Axe that requires 2h ("Greataxe"). Hell, even a Maul would suffice.

Why is such an obvious thing missing?

EDIT: It's highly possible I placed this in the wrong forums. I considered for a long time which it's best suited for but "general" seemed pretty relevant to me. If not, I apologize and I'm sure some beauty will move it for me.

Maybe in the future, we'll get a true scythe.  Scythes came out in the original GW when they introduced the dervish profession.

IIRC, greataxes are confirmed to be in development for a (far) future update, so don't worry yourself too much over it.

We don't have long daggers or big foci either...

The shape of the weapon actually is just flavor, if anything, the weapon type we get should be more influenced by the functions that are supposed to be on it than the other way around. For example, the necro could use pbaoe, and that's why a scythe makes sense. It shouldn't be that the necro needs to have a scythe, and thus gets pbaoe.
Also, I don't see greataxes being used by a whole variety of classes except the warrior really, and it stands to reason that the devs would want to reuse weapons on as many classes as possible.

It would be great if they added a 2 hand axe for the war class and removed the use of bows for them. I always felt a war with a bow is a stupid concept. I dont even think thief should have em. They should has some type of knuckles though.

Maul is a large hammer, already have that. But I look forward to the great axe. Should make for some interesting changes in build craft theory.

I'd rather them pull spears out of water combat and give us other polearms and halberds for land than a great axe, and I don't see it as something that is blatantly missing.  Great axe attack animations would probably be just about the same as the hammer attacks are right now, and the only class that a great axe really fits with is the warrior.  

The game doesn't need more weapons.  The game needs more skills for the current weapons so that players can at least have a choice on their skill bar other than 1 heal, 3 situational (for the most part) utility skills, and an even more situational elite, many of which are just bad skills.

Most blatant missing weapon/profession?

Has to be unarmed.

Imagine your different "weapon sets" are different martial combat styles to swap between. Wing Chun (Those who seen IP Man movie will know it) and wrestling moves on your 2 sets anyone?

In fact there's a use for the monk profession in GW2 after all, bald people jazzing-em-up and looking cool.

As for what profession archtypes we are missing at this point, I can think of 2.

1: A monk/shaman/druidic profession that takes on aspects of wild animals & spirits. Could use nature magic enhanced melee or ranged.

2: Something akin to a Samuri.

Actually a maul has a blunt side to it's head (like a hammer) and a sharp edge (like an axe). I was reluctant to "suggest" a maul due to this, but it's just one option.

I knew someone would say this.

1) Big dagger is essentially a sword.
2) I shall simplify the comparison to be between Axe, Sword & Mace. They are all very similar weapons, wielded in one hand & do a similar job, but differently. A Sword is for slashing and stabbing, a Mace is crushing and pummeling and an Axe is for hacking and cutting.

A big focus is inpractical as they are not a damaging weapon. A large focus would condone a pacifist method of play as you can't deal damage, yet take very little (i.e. can avoid it).

There is a clear niche that is ideal for a 2handed variant of an axe. If you can't see this you are either blind or just downright ignorant to logic.

The type of maul with an axe on one side and hammer on other is a "splitting maul". A very specialized maul for industrial labor such as splitting tree stumps not common to war usages.
