So with the unveiling of the PS4 yesterday evening, what are everybodys thoughts on the subject? :)
I can't help to think the small footage of games we saw look pretty nice (graphic-wise)

Thoughts?
  • Single-chip custom processor, with eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores and 1.84 TFLOPS next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine
  • 8GB GDDR5 memory
  • Built-in hard drive
  • 6x Blu-Ray and 8x DVD drive
  • USB 3.0 and auxiliary ports
  • Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.1
  • HDMI, analog AV-out, and optical S/PDIF audio output
  • DualShock 4 controller, with two-point capacitive touchpad, three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer, vibration, light bar with three color LEDs, mono speaker, micro USB port, stereo headset port, extension port, 1000mAh battery
  • PlayStation 4 Eye camera, with two 1280 x 800 cameras, f/2.0 fixed focus lenses, 85-degree field of view, 30cm minimum focusing distance, four-channel microphone array

Graphics wise, very very nice. Watch Dogs and Deep Down are the games I am very interested about. The potential for the new console is huge. The only thing I am confused about is the fact that the lead director said he wanted to wait until the announcement of the next xbox before they announced the ps4.

PS4 is being based on AMD Fusion platform. AMD Fusion is targeted at budget level, and it's not exactly the highest performance hardware out there. It's CPU/GPU combined into 1 chip. It will get better as time goes on, but right now it's only capable of running games at 720p at med settings w/ maybe a few on high. 1080p if you lower the graphics. If the rumored hardware of the next Xbox is for real, then it will be the most powerful one, as far as consoles go. Still won't even touch PC tho.

Im pretty sure they will charge crazy prices for ps4

Quote

Unfortunately, Perry also let slip that PS4 hardware won’t support backwards compatibility with PS3 games.

So hundreds of dollars most likely for a console without the ability to play your old ps 1,2,3 games....erm, sounds like a rip off to me.

I did find this interesting though.

Quote

PC developer Blizzard Entertainment announced a strategic partnership with Sony to launch games on both the PS3 and PS4, with a console version of Diablo III currently under development

Diablo 3 on console? Im wondering if Anet saying before launch they may have a console version of GW2 in the making might be happening in the next 6 months-year?

I am excited. I plan on buying it come this november. The specs seem nice and as long as the graphics look slightly better, BUT do more terms of AI than the current gen, I am happy.

Didn't know this existed till I read this, youtubed, and saw the demo for Watch Dogs. Looks VERY nice. I'd consider getting it, except, alas, I am a Halo fanboy, and if I'm gonna get any next gen console, it's gonna be the one that will have Halo 5 and 6 on it. lol

EDIT: Actually, the only way I would be sure to get the PS4 is if Kingdom hearts 3 was exclusive to it. Then I'd thrown down the money right away...which reminds me I need a Ps3 for when the remakes of 1 and 2 comes to the US.

I probably will get it. I find that a PC/PlayStation combo is good. You get console exclusives plus PC exclusives and overall a good gaming experience.

The non-backwards competability really ruins it for me..
And not to mention it's already mediocre hardware at this time, curious how it will be in 2-3 years..
Guess I'll just stick to my PC and use some tricks if I want to play ps3 only games.

The primary reason I bought the PS3 was it was the best value for a blue-ray player I could find at the time, and I needed a new DVD player anyway...interestingly enough, the only blue-ray I've ever watched in the thing was the included movie...

I haven't owned a console since I had a SNES. I saw some previews of the games they will have on this. They look nice but I'm just not sure I want to shell out the money for this (I imagine it will be priced in the $400 to $500 range?)

IT wouldn't have made sense to be backwards compatible unless they were willing to put in cell parts into the unit, which drives up the price and then people then complain how expensive the console is. Then they end up not buying it either ways.

Backwards compatibility is a double-edged sword, sure it's nice to have one machine to do it all, but it also acts like an anchor on innovation...in the past II found that the occasions where I actually broke out the old games on a new console were so few and far between, that they may as well never happened at all...

Backwards compatibility shouldn't be a dealbreaker; the majority of consoles are not backwards compatible. For what it's worth, Sony and Gaikai are working on a way to bring older games to the PS4 via their new SUPER STREAMING tech.

I'm impressed by Sony's change in direction, and hopeful that the PS4 will bring them back from their downward spiral. Can't say if it's good enough until the Nextbox announcement hits, but at least it's better than the WiiU.

I bought a BC PS3 for 600 bucks, sadly I used it only once or twice. BC is one of those things MOST people like to have but wont actually ever used. It's kinda like the same outrage over the removal of the OtherOs, most of the people angry about probably didn't use it but for some reason just piled on the the hate bandwagon.

Deep Down seems too good to be real. I don't think that video was showing actual gameplay. If so it's like "wow!".

Specs look quite good, but the best part of it is probably the controller.

I liked Metroid Prime hunters on the DS, because it had good controls. With the DS and the Wii, I always wondered, why Nintendo didn't make a Gamecube controller with a Touchscreen in the middle, but developed the Wiimote instead. Now Sony it.

It fits nice into the controller without focusing too much on the touchscreen only (like the WiiU).
The Dualshock 3 is awesome, because it has a motion sensor, it's sitll a controller, so the games utilise the motion sensor in a decent way, not just shake your controller as much, as you can.

Maybe they could have implemented better Hardware, but as long as the games are fun and the controls are good, i don't really care, wo much antialiasing I have. Sure, it's nice to have, but not top priority.

I don't think, I'll get another console though, as I simply prefer a PC for gaming, but maybe if there are some nice console-exclusive titles, I'll get it.

It looks nice, based on what we know of the specs.

I like the controller.

But, I'll have to wait and see how the streaming of older generation games works as I still play more PS2 games on my 60GB PS3 than I do PS3 games. If they implement a system where you can just put in your disks and it'll unlock the games for you, that would be awesome (if the streaming is up to snuff).

...HTPC is still beyond the techiness of many/most mainstream peeps, so consoles are also simpler ways of achieving similar home entertainment access to things like Netflix etc...so it does go beyond just playing console games...

The specs are somewhat underwhelming.  For right now I guess it is fine.  But I'm worried how well this will keep up 5-6 years down the line.  Consoles should go overkill with their specs for longevity, not just be "pretty good" when they come out.

I also don't think the average person is going to have the bandwidth to actually use all this streaming tech that they have built in.  At least not right away.  Kinda the opposite problem of my last comment.  This actually IS thinking ahead, but it might not be very functional at launch.

Some nice features overall though.  I'm glad they added the more physical spring loaded trigger buttons like the 360 controller.  Those just feel so much more responsive then the old PS controller bumper buttons.  Depending on the exclusives and the price point I wouldn't be opposed to getting it.

The first game Blizzard is bringing to Sony consoles is none other than Diablo III. Oh God! Enough of tech talk! I believe Blizzards next MMO Titan will also be released on Playstation 4.

Erm... this is about the PS4, not what Blizzard 'might' bring to the console in the future. One post about Titan is enough... let's not keep on about it :P If you're that excited, go and make a thread about Titan! :)

Anyway, I watched the gameplay of Watch Dogs and I can't wait :D Sure, the graphics are pretty and all, but I love the idea of hacking into everything and just roaming around. But seriously, I highly doubt that the PS4 will be all about graphics. There should be some truly great games on the console with very good stories. I wouldn't be surprised if Quantic Dream released something within the next two years, or if they simply released Beyond: Two Souls when the PS4 launches.

Naughty Dog always produce top-notch gameplay along with fantastic storylines as well. Sucker Punch are also pretty good at what they do. Bungie (the guys who made Halo 1-3) are also making a brand new game that will apparently redefine storytelling as well as FPS combat in games. If they can do that with this generation, just think what they can do in the next. It's not all about graphics, and you honestly cannot judge the quality of the games based on hardware specs of an unreleased console.

Yeah right this joke :D thread is dead to me after this post. This is my last post on this "technical" thread lol .

However I think it is very interesting PS4 has DDR5 memory as RAM :surprised:. DDR5 is usually used for Graphic cards memory. The amount is not that impressive 8 GB. However I have not checked prices DDR5 is certainly more expensive then DDR3 RAM. Memory wise DDR5 memory is impressive and 8 GB is well yeah enough for most of the games. I would say memory is certainly not the weak spot of PS4.

The PS4 just can't play PS3 and earlier disks. There is talk about the PS4 having access to the entire PS library through the new Sony cloud streaming system. Though I sincerely hope that streaming isn't the end of their backwards compatibility since it would be hard for those with lousy internet.

I think the price of the PS4 is around about ~40,000 yen? That's much cheaper than the PS3 already. Though the daylight robbers in my country are taking preorders for $899.

The lineup of prerelease games look interesting, especially looking forward to Watch Dogs, The Last Guardian and a new FF.

Good joke.

Anyway, I'm not too concerned about any technical specs for RAM or graphics potential. I never play a game because it has high fidelity. I'm more interested in the size of the HD and hardware features. The new controller seems slick and should provide some interesting features for devs to play with. Lack of backwards compatibility is a little meh, but nothing I can't live without especially since the cloud streaming service. Hopefully they will be available for DL as well.

You have a PS3, don't get rid of it and problem solved.  BC isn't necessary, I'd rather them use the money on something that would make the PS4 better than it already is.

Also I'll definitely be getting this, don't care about price.  Someone said that GW2 might be on it, I was talking to a friend about how a MMO like GW2 would work perfect on a console since it doesn't have a lot of attacks and can easily be played on a gamepad.  Watching the vids and stuff I'm really hoping they finally take advantage of their console and finally release an MMO that's good.

Unfortunately, the only way to get BC is to keep your ps3. The only way to make BC that works properly is to insert ps3 parts into the ps4 and that would make it too expensive.  Another method is software emulation, but that requires a  FAR FAR FAR more powerful computer than the current high-end consumer computer. Let's put it this way, my super awesome PC can barely emulate wii game without breaking a sweat.

Finally, how can you be excited about the possibility of a new FF game? I mean really.

For anyone interested here is an artficle from digital fouldary.

Supposedly, the demo was shown with an OLD developer SDK, which means it could be better.
