Anyone wanna venture a guess/opinion as to what the most/least popular classes are. Include if you want, differences between pve, spvp, and wvw.

I'd say warriors are very popular, but that's probably more because it's only one of two soldier professions, and not everyone likes the guardian - which nicely segues into the second-most popular one: guardians. I guess blue bubbles and spinning greatswords is the latest thing.

Least popular... engineer and necromancer. This is all from PuGs, WvWvW and general PvE.

i'd say Warriors, Mesmers and Guardians make up the top 3 that i see in PvE.

necromancers are increasingly rare.  Engineers are still rare though they might go up in popularity now that they fixed the sigil issue.

Necros are wicked in WvW with their wells for large scale fights, they are also good in PvE if played correctly. I have a friend who can kite Lupi on her Necro with ease.

This is coming from someone who never played necro, just observation.

My least "preferred" class would be Engi, the rest of them are all good and add interesting blend/combos during fights. Going with pure War/Guard makes for a very predictable run for dungeons

I focus on WvW.  I main a warrior and it appears to remain a popular profession.  I would attribute this to the simple fact the generic brawler type character is the most popular selection.  Tbh my continued interest in this character continues to surprise me because every time I play it I can only think of all the ways one can easily defeat the profession.  I think it's just the sheer variety of comparably effective builds.

I see a lot of thieves still but it is not as much.  I think a lot of people rolled a thief to learn how to counter one better like I did and do not play their thief as much now.

Guardians were never unpopular but they are creeping up.  As I am currently leveling one I am beginning to understand why; part of it is their main weaknesses are alleviated by the current metagame.

Seeing more mesmers now but not drastically more.  Ellies are coming up quite a bit but they are all spike builds and DD builds.  Powerful in WvW but not a fun profession to level.

Rangers have drastically declined.  The ones I do see now are generally better at it at least.

Necromancers and Engineers are bottom two for sure.  Which is funny to me because I have a Necro and an Engi is next after my Guardian.  So I will have the most and last popular professions all at once!

I would have to agree that necros and engis are by far the least popular, though I doubt it's because people don't think they're powerful. For me at least, it's simple aesthetics.

I will have to add this: People make their main depending on the Legendary weapons they like and not so much about profession they play. Sadly this is one of the reasons the Greatsworders are so popular (except ranger's gs) because they have the most powerful builds with the greatest looking skin.

Seems everyone agrees about the class popularities in general. I cannot say that I agree with it myself (at least not 100%), but the general populous has spoken

This is certainly not the be-all, end-all of class popularity estimates, obviously since it is taken from the Guru forums and not the official forums (though even those wouldn't necessarily give an accurate snapshot because the % of people on the forums vs the game is, in all probability, lower), but here's a poll that was being run and was active as of last Monday that gives a small little picture of what's popular and what isn't:

It was posted in response to the fact that Anet hasn't really released any prof/race numbers since back in Oct, IIRC (could've been Sept, don't really remember right off the top of my head).  Again, take the numbers with a grain of salt because they are from Guru and its users rather than the official forums, or actual in-game numbers.  That being said, from my personal observations, which are just that, personal observations that may or may not be generalized to the broader population, the above poll does seem relatively accurate....though I was very surprised at the number of people posting their ranger as their main.

The latest semi-official info on professions would be from the recent interview with Colin:

I'd be careful about making broad sweeping generalizations about what "people" do. I could say that "people" choose the professions with the most power, most ability to get a group, the most attractive armor in their opinion, etc. Lots of different reasons. The heavies are popular mostly due to their abilities in-game, and the greatsword legendaries are just icing on the cake. Heavies have always been the big canvas classes in MMOs...the best looking armor, most variety in weapons and skins for said weapons, etc.

I'm seeing quite a few guardians. Mostly because of their powerful attacks coupled with immense party support abilities using just about all of their weapons.

But we have this discussion just about monthly. Honestly, who cares what most other people prefer to play? If you want to be different...meh. There's other ways to be different than playing an underplayed class.
