Is it possible for an EU server player to end up in a group with NA players?

Nope.
You can join the group but you can't join them in instances or overflows.

I was under the impression that since the reason for no cross region guesting is because of the split databases, we shouldn't be able to communicate at all with anyone from EU servers, let alone group with one.
This was what happened: -
Me and my buddy were LFM'ing on mapchat.
A german guy joined us.
We got error when trying to enter dungeon, so we asked him which region he was from and he said EU.
How the heck did he even get to know we were looking for more on mapchat?

Hmmm... yes, but his party invite request was not directed to me.
He just suddenly joined our party as if my other group mate invited him.
Well, regardless of what happened, I am still puzzled why we could technically communicate with EU players yet not be able to guest in EU servers.
The two regions are quite obviously connected.
