I am just going to post some statistics here that I found looking at the differences between GW1 Guru forums and GW2 guru forums for the first 6 months of GW1 and GW2's releases:

Guild Wars 2 Sales in the first 6 months: At least 3 million copies. (See: http://www.ign.com/a...-plans-revealed)

Guild Wars Prophecies Sales as of Sept. 22, 2005 (5 months after release): 1 million copies. (See: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/NCsoft)

Approximate Number of threads posted in the "Tyrian Assembly" Section of GW2 Guru site since GW2's release (Aug. 28, 2012 - Feb 25, 2013): 3,150 (see: this site)

Approximate Number of threads posted in the "Riverside Inn" section of the GW1 Guru site in the first 6 months of GW1's release (April. 28, 2005 - Oct. 25, 2005): 4,220 (see. guildwarsguru.com - page #'s are around 1,125 to 914, 20 threads per page.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. GW2: 3,150 posts / 3 million copies = 0.1%
2. GW1: 4,220 posts / 1 million copies = 0.4%

Second, let's look at the difference in the amount of threads made:

4,220 (GW1) - 3,150 (GW2) = 1,070 threads less.

Interested to see what the conversation looks like based on this information, and if we can take away anything from this information.

One thing you do not take into account is the different amount of other forums available at the time of GW1 vs GW2.

If you do a search about GW1 forums most of the results will show guildwarsguru, but if you on the other hand search for GW2 you will find rather many different forums discussing it.
Another thing to take into account is the fact GW2 also have an official forum that is rather active as well, while GW1 did not.

Selective evidence is not a good basis for an argument.

Yea, that could be. I have to look at that too. Guru was the best forum for GW1. I think there might have been an official forum, but I honestly can't remember.

I would hope so, or else it still doesn't make up for the lack of people talking about the game vs. the amount of games sold.

I believe it was a 400% increase in threads to games sold for GW1 vs. GW2?

Right, and I agree that all official forums are pretty much garbage but that isn't really the point.

I believe it was a 400% increase in threads to games sold for GW1 vs. GW2?

But you still haven't included data from other forums. so 400% is not yet a valid number.  That's on this forum alone and it's already been established that players have a wider variety of forums to post on now.  What if people just feel that this they'd rather post somewhere else instead of there being less interest in the game?

On the official forums there are 425 pages of posts just in the General GW2 Discussion section itself.  Just on the first page alone there are 2784 replies to 30 threads.  30 threads per page - that's 12,750 threads.

Just for clarification - were you counting all posts made to every thread, or just the individual threads created as 1?  (Not sure if I worded my question well...)

Not to mention the fact that based on the amount of threads vs. copies of the game sold, the official forums need to have 116,000 more threads (in the general discussion area) just to keep the same ratio. I wonder if they have that many?
Might want to check your math on that one...

It hasn't actually been established that there are more forums.

Yes, I realize my numbers are skewed by the official forums - which would have made this a lot easier if there were TWO official forums we could compare.

I just took the amount of threads created in those times, not the posts.

it will be interesting to see how the number of copies sold changes as the years progress and compared to gw1 oh and if you believe the dev's post on the subject there was a rise in new players after the bottom of the spike from release which is a good sign

And yet that is completely irrelevant. You come here and claim that GW2 is a failure because the only big forum for GW1 had more threads the first 6 months than ONE of the forums of GW2 have.

The fact that there are MORE big forums for GW2 than GW1 should simply be taken into calculation.

I would like you to point out the part where I said anything is a failure. I just simply looked up some stats, not thinking about the official forums, and posted them for people to scrutinize.

Also, please tell me where these more BIG forums are? You say it, but you don't give evidence.

At least I try to point out things with facts, whether they make sense or not. You, however, just make up statements without providing any evidence whatsoever.

You are using selective data. Posting habits and trends cannot be made unless you use all of the data.

Its not technically a forum but you can't have a post like this and not include the gw2 subreddit rofl.  The reddit probably has as many posts in as the official forums do.  Seriously this was not thought through and I have no clue what the point is.

Honestly, I am curious to try and find a way to determine whats going on with the population of the game.

It started from a thread where some people swear all the servers are active 24/7 to people saying the game is dead.

I thought it was a unique way to try and find out some info.

Other people can put words in my mouth if they like.

I guess I should ask this thread to be closed as my numbers didn't take in to account the main forums.

I enjoy statistics and think it would be a really interesting snapshot.  How does copies sold compare to community involvement?  However, all data sources have to be included to create an accurate picture.

Another large (once elite) site in the early GW1 days was Guild Wars OGaming.  The site is now defunct (closed in mid-2007), but it once had a fairly large base of members, and it hosted many Guild sites.  Before that site closed, it had thousands of threads, and tens of thousands of posts.

More info about the history of OGaming is mentioned in http://www.guildwars...-t10184408.html

That OGaming site sounds like a really well-used site. Especially when looking at the reason for it going down and seeing that it was because of the lack of page views to pay the bills...
