T6 Mat Farm Guide

(hopefully, this is in the right place!)

I keep seeing this thread linked to places like reddit. It's extremely outdated and I have updated it here. Thanks!

Powerful blood is more profitable by killing the young karkas in the southwest corner of southsun, karka shells sell for a pretty penny.

I farm blood all over southsun, and the spawn rate of the karka around the island in the southwest corner is your best bet(probably only easy to solo if you are a mesmer) and you get the shells which you can use to make high value exotics or just sell alone, plus you can turn in the eggs for event karma.  It isn't close to the pace you see around the water to  the north where most farmers hang out-I will often be fighting 4-6 at a time.   I can always sell the blood for two or three of another type of t6, but I am convinced at this point, your best bet to farm t6 is heavy moldy bags from cursed shore event farming.

Also, the price of transmuting using 5 crystaline dust compared to turning all those t5s into rares to salvage or sell isn't something I would do.

As you said, unless you are a mesmer the karka farm can be a bit daunting. As I stated in the guide, these farms were basically developed to be "Semi-afkable." That is, could I do something else on my second screen (read, write, watch a movie) and not have to worry about dieing. I don't disregard the Karka farm as bad, it's actually the opposite, but it wasn't as afkable as some of the other farms we had. So I didn't include it in the guide.

As for Orr and the heavy baggs, you are again, also right. It is good for T6 farming if you don't necessarily care about which T6's you're getting. If you need a specific T6 (say, for an infusion or back piece, what have you), then this is probably a little bit more beneficial.

And for the dust, I just threw in the promoting bit to just say that it is an option.

So would you say that farming reef skelk gives an higher average of vials of powerful blood than young Karka?

I'm asking because I've been farming Karka and it has been show.

I ran around southsun last night with a guildie...me on my MF thief, him on his berserker warrior, and after three hours the numbers were a little too close for comfort for anyone advocating Magic Find for this farm. My total: 15 powerful blood, 63 karka shells, around 38-40 potent blood, two random rares, three unid'd dyes including one white and two commons.

His tally: 12 powerful blood, around 50 karka shells, 45 potent blood, three dyes including two rares (blood and midnight gold). No rare equipment. It's been about similar returns every other time we farmed that area together, as well. I swapped to my berserker armor while keeping my MF trinkets halfway through the last time we'd done it, and my drops actually seemed to improve. I suggest a dps build at first then creep a little Magic find in if your drops start out poor, and see how it improves.

As I mentioned in a previous post, Karka is a great farm, possibly better. But these farms are meant to be easy, afkable, "Can I read this journal article for my class and not need to pay attention?" type of farm. Handmade and myself decided that the Skelk farm was better suited for this than Karka, but karka is fine too.

I guess I'll need to update the guide at some point to note this, since I'm getting a lot of people who are asking me this.

For those who care, while the Fish Oil farm was nerfed (yay), these farms were not.

I've been getting some questions ingame about it, so I thought I'd post here.

As someone who likes to "legitamately" farm, these types of farms really bug me. If you happen to see Lyssa contested, go open it! [Link]

Me and my guild [LiES] have done almost all of these farms, our results were;
Vicious Fang/Vials of Powerful Blood Farm: Very fun fast-paced farm, good for Bloods, Fangs come rarely. T5 Bloods will drops from almost every other skelk.
Powerful Venom Sac Farm: This area isnt fun to farm, winders are annoying and lots of karka around, Venom Sacs not woth the trouble.
Vicious Claw and Ancient Bone Farms: This is complete Kitten, a complete waste of time. Very few enemys, and the only perk is you might get corrupted cores.
Elaborate Totem/Ancient Bone Farm: Absolutely amazing, Many Many weak enemys that respawn quickly, high drop percentages.
Piles of Crystalline Dust/Charged Lodestone + Other Lodestones: Great for dust/loot, with quick respawns, lodestone drop rate is next to nothing, i wouldnt bother with this unless you need the dust.
Armored Scales: Havn't tryed this one, but it sounds promising, if enemy respawn is fast i would deffinatly look into this.

I assume with the second Powerful Venom sac, you mean the Vicious Claw farm.

Yea, in hindsight, it probably isn't best. I'm looking around for a better one. But I do like my corrupted lodestones.

Yes i did, but overall the best way to farm T6 mats is to do the Cursed Shore event chains, the Heavy Moldy Bags drop insanely quick, and they have high T6 drop rates. Not to mention risen drop T5 and T6 Bones.

The bone/claw (+corrupted lodestone) farm is the best gold per hour of all of these. The powerful blood and totems is quite profitable but don't bother with venom and dust farms as the gold per hour is about 1/4 of the corrupted lodestone. Venom really bad in fact.

BTW, the armored scales drop all along the north edge of that coast which helps keep the mobs coming, though this isn't a great cash farm either. With suitable magic find and a couple of buddies you can easily get:

Bone/Claw : 7gph
totem: 5gph
Blood: 5gph

(You can actually get significantly more than this with optimised MF and a good party)

Welp, the recent patch on Southsun nerfed the Venom Sac Farm. I'm checking skelks soon.

We'll see what happens with this patch...

Update #2

Venom Sac farm is nerfed for the time being. I was watching the live stream yesterday with the Devs around Southsun, they confirmed that not all structures are staying, so other things might be coming in. I'll keep an eye on it and update as needed.

I'll be adding a Karka Shell Farm. This won't be like the other farms, but it'll be the farm that myself and my friends are using to grab Karka shells (like 108 in 3 hours, and that was slow). I'll throw that map+path  up in the near future.

The Skelk farm got a buff with the update. Much like the Venom Sac Farm, I'm not sure if it will stay like that, but the initial density of Skelk at the starting cove increased while the rest of the farm remained the same.

Hope everyone is enjoying Southsun :)

The MF bonus that comes with the Settler guy is really good for the farm. Is the Skelk farm you're referring to the Blood/Fang farm? I did it tonight for about an hour and got 6 powerfuls, many potents bloods, 8 vicious an many large fangs. Not sure how those numbers compared to before but given the bonus 200% I expected more.

This is actually something I'm actually interested in doing some research on. When these farms were being developed, we would run some MF, not a full set, but just "some." I usually had more than my friend who was running it, and I would get "roughly" the same amount of Mats as he did sometimes, other times I would get more (I rarely got less). We basically chalked these results up to just really weird RNG.

I know for a fact that MF will increase you're rare and green drops, but I don't know how much it will impact the drop rate of materials, which are classified as blue tiered. I think in the next week (hell, maybe even today) or so I will start up a project to actually see how much MF impacts the drop rate of crafting materials, as so I can adjust and cater this guide around that.

You mentioned in your first post that 3 hours = 100+ shells with a large mob, which is pretty solid. How many Powerful Bloods does this farm yield (also in 3 hours)? Last I've checked the Karka Shells have dropped significantly in price.

It has weirdly and wildly varied. I have gotten between 4 and 13 on the three times I've done the 3 hour runs.

Lyssa farm was nerfed, but as far as I know, the Malchors leap spark farm isn't.

Skelk actually is buffed a little (There are a couple more there now since the patch).
I have not found a reef rider farm replacement, but I have heard of one in the norther borderlands of WvW. I'm hesitant to post it because it is in WvW and the risk of dieing can be high for some servers at different times.

Nothing else has changed as far as I know

You know, for the people that want to know this info :P

June 3rd update nerfed skelk farm. The northern half is the same, but the primary cove is about 1/4th of what it used to be.

Personally< i saw that coming and don't think it was bad. They buffed it with the Southsun Patch in May and things got preeeetty crazy recently with the farm. So it's fine by me.

If you want Bloods, I'd suggest Karka. If you want Fangs, I'm working on that...

As I am finding out, you still can, really. It's just not as quick as it was.these past couple weeks. It's just a little slower than Pre-Southsun Update.
