I have played several MMO's and have always wondered if folks would be willing to gamble the life of their max-level character in exchange for an exclusive title. If Arena Net created an ultimate  boss  that would be a difficult challenge for a small group of level 80 characters and granted an exclusive title for a victory would you be willing to try it?

If you win, everyone knows from the title that you took the ultimate challenge. The downside is that if you were to lose, the character dies (as in DEAD, DECEASED, NO REVIVE)

So, basically about 60 gold if you lose.

Not counting weapons, armors, accessories, and time taken to finish everything (World Completion, Fractals, etc).

I would take such a challenge. Of course I would come with a group that I've worked with for hundreds of hours.

You know as wwell as most, that the only 80 that anyone would use would be the one with the bare minimum of '80-ism'...I doubt there would be that large of a % of hard core players in this game that would be willing to place a 3000 hour 80 in such a place....

Given what A.Net considers as "a challenge", no, I would not. Not because it would be a waste to lose a character, but because I very much doubt that I would enjoy the content itself.

I'm not one for titles, so I would probably pass.

Does the title sparkle and flash above your head like a neon sign? These things are important you know...

At the rate I make 80s, I'd risk one to at least try.

Gambling is a bad idea, even IRL.

I would definitely try until I got it. The only problem I would face is that once I got it on one character, my main character(s) would be jealous. So then I'd try to get it on them, and probably die. Then I'd quit the game.

my initial reaction was: no

but then i started to think about it and it really just depends.

if i had a dungeon gorup that i ran with and we knew each other like the backs of our hands, then i may consider it.

the ultimate chanllenge; eternal glory.  yeah that sounds about right for me

I'd take my thief in just because I never play her and wouldn't care if I lost the character.

but honestly the only title I ever cared about was dungeon master, and now that I have that I couldn't care less about the other ones.

It does if you have played the character before the update, I'm going to assume most people will want this title on their "main" character. Also going to assume this title will be character bound and not account bound or everyone will just use trash crafted 80s until they get it, making it a worthless title. Therefor if this were ever implemented into the game, it would be at a time where A LOT of players will have invested  A LOT of hours in their main character.

titles are account wide, like matsif mentioned dungeon master title, its on every character

Depends on which side of the spectrum of ANet boss design it's on.
If it's on the "1-shot mechanics with no animation" side, no.
If it's on the "AoE the 500 mob swarm" side, yes.
If it's on the "10 minute slugfest with easy-to-avoid mechanics with no challenge", yes.

I run a general principle of 'no permadeath content in online games'. I have too much experience with the number of ways you can end up dead through no lack of your own skill.
Got any comments or queries about moderation in one of my spheres of responsibility? Make sure I get the message!

maybe the OP needs to specify, does this mean, if you die during the encounter period? or if your entire party dies and the boss resets and you effectively have failed the content?

ive died during encounters only to be fully revived within a few minutes and continue to fight and down the boss and thus clearing hte content.

If ANet had perfect servers and I had a perfect internet connection, I might consider it.

I would race a character to 80 to complete the task if I did do it, that way the financial loss of perma-death would be more negligible!

He means that if you fail the boss you die completely, your character dies and can never be revived. You literary lose your character if you die. I think he means then that if your group fails every character in that group will permanently die.

I'd personally only do it if I had the group of skilled people to do it with and if the title had a insanely epic emote to it or something.

Given what GW2 considers as group challenges hell no. Even paying to get into a dungeon would be too much for me atm

I'd rush a fresh alt to 80 and do it just to find out exactly how hard it is. I doubt I'd ever gamble my main over it though.

The community would burn through some gold crafting sacrificial alts up to level 80, but once the boss mechanics were discovered it wouldn't really be much of a gamble anymore. The boss would be designed to be defeated, so as usual it would just be a matter of learning when to dodge/block/invuln/reflect.

Reminds me a bit of DDO's True Reincarnation.

There once you hit level 20 (which is the cap unless you want to go epic) you can choose to kill you character in return for some wings on your name, a change in rank and 2 more build points. You get to keep all you old gear in a special withdraw only bank.

There's also a bonus if you live a life as each profession, which is a huge task as the XP requirement to level increases each life up to the third where it's about 2~3 times as much as a first lifer.

People do it, but I'd say more for the actual perks rather than the title changes.

I would like to see something similar here, but I'd say the WIN condition would have to be linked to the DEATH i.e. you only get the title if you succeed, and you die; fail the mission and you live on at 80 to try again...

Some bonus to the toon would be nice, perhaps access to one utility from a previous life's profession. But that's a balance nightmare.

... I really miss multiclassing.

I am sure there are anal-retentives out there that go ga-ga for any new title and would chase one such as this, no matter the cost.

Now that they are moving into China, with a market of millions of communist repressed indivuduals hungry for 'tltes' that will make them stand out from the throng, I expect to see more stuff like this, not less.

you are misunderstanding me, im asking if you die DURING the boss battle are you denied a chance of revival? or can you get revived and kill the boss and get the title?

I imagine the only way to keep it meaningful would be if it were like a dungeon, but without any way points.

So if you die and are revived, it's fine.

But if the team wipes it's the end of the instance.
