Can you think of, let's say 5, instances in PvE where you consciously decided to remove a boon for the sake of removing a boon? Not inconsequentially because you just happen to have a skill that removes them as well as it's main effect, and not to trigger a secondary effect of an ability.

Have you EVER seen a boon on an enemy and used a skill to remove that boon, because that was more efficient than just landing another damaging ability?

No. I have pistols with a sigil to remove a boon - and I only ever really use them against things that put up Retaliation.

When I'm a Mesmer, I pull boons all the time. Every other class...not so much.

Anytime there's protection on an enemy I'll strip it. I'll toss on well of boon-flipping-whatever-its-name-is whenever there's an enemy that spams boons.
Off the top of my head, dredge. Always dredge. I always strip protection off of dredge because you just cannot kill them fast enough. Goddamn I hate dredge.

5 that came to mind just from fractals
dredge fractal - remove protection on dredge trash and especially 1st boss,
underwater fractal - remove upto 25 stacks of might from jellyfish final boss
ascalon fractal - remove upto 25 stacks of might from monks
ascalon fractal - remove might stacks from final boss
uncategorized fractal - remove protection from ettin (also gets 5xmight and fury iirc).

There are more, but basically vs a boss whenever you have the chance to take away key boons like protection/regen it allows your team to dps more effectively. And as a mesmer to be able to use arcane theivery to remove a number of might stacks and give them to your team via signet of inspiration is handy.

thief sword skills now make this easy.  Lacerous Strikes causes a lot of dmg and strips a boon so it behooves you to use the boon stripping skill if not for just its dmg.

Don't kno what teams you play with but I can definitely say you wont unless your party sucks(i.e not running a balanced team with at least 1 person who can give regen/heals). I always remove them thought, on my mesmer, I run sword and disenchanters. But if I'm on my ele or guard and we don't have a mesmer, or we got an ele or guard, or a engi for that matter, it doesn't really matter. You can all just stay on boss and occasionally heal yourself as you see fit. But then again I feel like I'm the only person in the groups I pug who seem to realize that support is good, going a guardian for damage or never going water on an ele is stupidity in itself. It's like in GW1 when a monk comes and tell you he can't(more like wont) heal, because he's DPS... /uninstall

Tho, if you DON'T have someone supporting in your team then I definitely agree that it can be tough. :P

Most of the times I've consciously thought "I'm going to strip that buff", it's been against dredge. On the whole, I would say that boon-stripping can probably stand to be made more useful overall in PvE - it's possible to go through large swathes of the game without seeing a removable buff.

Haven't played against that particular boss, but more than just the mesmer or guardian can protect against that sort of thing - elementalists have a few options, engineers have Toss Elixir U, and thieves have Smoke Screen. Pretty much everyone except necromancers can at least protect themselves against projectiles, often reflecting them (ranger Whirling Defense, warriors can Endure Pain or block, and blocks become reflects with a trait). Mesmers and guardians are probably the best at it, but other professions can adjust their builds to deal with nasty projectiles.

Trick for the CoE golem boss: piercing attacks and positioning yourself next to a turret. Kill the turret to remove the boons, hit the boss, everyone wins. Same with with the Butcher in HOTW path 1, except with him you can actually pull him to a totem and hit both at once with melee.

Anyway, yes, I will make a conscious attempt to remove boons from certain enemies. Dredge are annoying as crap, so I'll strip theirs as much as possible. The CoE/HOTW bosses mentioned above. Any enemy that has any boon that makes things annoying (protection, regen, retaliation are the big ones - might if it gets over a certain amount).

It depends. I usually don't actively pack boon removal, but if a skill has that as second effect I see no reason not to use it. The only times I've paid attention to boon removal is in HOTW Path 1 but I do that through killing the totems rather than a skill on my bar.

Making this feature more viable would probably be good for the game and add a bit of depth to the combat.
