So, I just made this thread to express my disappointment in anet’s art direction regarding weapon design.

Most of them just look FLAT, literally… they have no real volume and many of them are very disproportionate like for instance the guild reward 2h sword… the one that is chopped off…. it’s heel size/gurth ratio to the rest of the weapon is WAYYYY off….

Others look downright flimsy or rusty beyond proper usage.

Others are disproportionally big with regard to the size and stature of the character, being so long that they clip through the ground or so thick that they look like tree stumps(gem store 1h mace).

Others have such BLAND BLAND color schemes that they pale when matched with any vibrant colored armor set.

Not to mention here the weapons that look like they had their outline drawn by a guy hooked up to a wall socket, jaghy/spikey/jittery way beyond what I’d find artful or acceptable.

They did get some of them right, only a handfull in my book: Volcanus, Sunrise, Twilight, Asura T3 greatsword, CoE greatsword(though certainly not my favorite but it is well defined, right proportions and has volume), Corrupted Avenger and most of the Corrupted weapons with the exception of the 1h sword witch is wayyy too long…

There’s not much to do in this game beside skin grinds and when so little of it appeals then what is there left to do? …. NOTHING!

I would have to agree when it comes to shield designs and especially hammers.  Mace's could use a little beefing up as well.

Ah, so you want particle effects on all weapons, don't you? :)

As far as the color schemes are concerned, I am fairly sure that they will sell weapon dyes in the gem store at some point in the future.

I wish they would give us back the ability to dye weapons again. I have no idea why they decided to leave that out, when there are even fewer weapon skins than there are armour.

I really want to go to the Meatoberfest in Diessa Plateau now and see if there are any weapons made from beef for sale.

I hate to criticize any of the artwork because I can see that there was a lot of time and effort put into it all, but I have to say that I am not a fan of the weapons style in GW2. ghastly weapons are the best balance of realism and fantasy, in my opinion. If they could just take that base and create different effects/colors (green poison tendrils, red flames, purple wisps, etc.) i'd be happier. I've just never been a big fan of these boat-paddle, over-the-top, huge weapon styles.

Heck, if they took the basic greatsword skin and just made it shiny, glowy, and in different colors, that would be pretty darn sweet to me too.

i agree with mournblade.  AC weapon set is arguably the best design but the other dungeon weapons are rather lackluster.  the SE weapons are downright lazy - red versions of the glyphic weapons?  really?

as for other designs, i feel like a lot of weapon skins for things like pistols, daggers, swords, etc are just to fantastical that they look ridiculous.

you really have to get creative with the non-dungeon exotics to find a unique look.

1) Most of the greatswords/swords looks like stupid burger flippers, not weapons. Really disappointed with those.
2) Even more disappointed with hammer skins. Punisher looks alright and that pirate sledge is good too. Others just suck.
3) Some shields are ok but CLIPPING MAKES ME NOT WANT TO USE THEM!!!

They did that with the Mistsblade for example and it looks utterly shitty. You got this rather nifty effect and then the starter-GW2 weapon trapped inside of it, I am sure that blade goes through serious identity crises, I know I would.

I still got my hopes up that they'll eventually broaden the spectrum of weapon schools and with that, find a vein to tap for more inspirational designs than what we're currently putting up with.

Brief of example of what I mean: Morningstars, Warhammer, Flails, Pickaxes, batons - all those and probably much more, could easily be used for Mace Animations (with the exception of flails maybe) and would vastly increase art design choices and what they could play around with. You can arguably find examples of this being applied to any weapon category you can think of.

They did experiment with that already - if you remember the Slingshot-Skin (including sounds and I think even animations) for the Christmas Update. So it's definitely not an unrealistic request.

all of this.  there are so few GSs and swords that actually look like swords in this game instead of paddles that it's disgusting.  Hammers as well there are very few that I like, and there are so many clipping issues with shields (either with back items or with your hand armor) that it really turns me away from them overall.

I'll also add daggers to the mix.  the variety is ok, but overall I just think the skins themselves are horrible.  They are either way too big (more like a short sword than a dagger) or just look absolutely awful.

Most relevant weapon skins are obtained via the Mystic Forge via convulsed recipes that require obscene amounts of rare materials. The rest is lacklustre in comparison, if we ignore Cash-Shop only skins.

Am I the only one to find this upsetting? Revolting, even?

Actually I would not mind a few Cash-shop weapon skins that look good, I mean really good, however there are almost none... only 3 of them... the longbow, arrow quiver and that shield all look good, the mace on the other hand is obscenely thick, more like a tree stump as I said in my OP.

It's such a shame... wish we had Tera quality armors and weapons with the GW2 world and I could not ask for more.... well maybe I could but it would certainly shut me up for some time:)

Quaggan paddles. If my thief gets bored, she just plays ping pong.

What really blows my mind are many of the rifle/pistol skins--particularly those made out of some solid material (a la Destroyer, Bone, Jormag, etc.). I don't get it? I realize that, with a fantasy game, there must be some suspension of disbelief, but given the other, far-more functional skins, these are just dumb.

I'm confused here. You have issue with weapons that are essentially flat yet you name the two flattest greatswords in the game as examples of good weapon design?

I believe OP meant "flat" as in boring, not smooth. Although personally I find the legendary greatswords boring, because they're by far the most common legendaries.

I have to seriously agree on the lack of decent weapon skins though. I get that this is a fantasy game, but I don't want to be swinging around a sword that's as thick as my character is wide. It just looks stupid.

I'm actually convinced that the crafted exotic weapons (the quaggan set) are ugly as sin in a just barely subtle attempt to make us use (and hopefully buy) transmutation crystals so we can have weapons that don't look like shit. Same with most of the dungeon weapons. As one person pointed out above, most of the decent skins are either cash shop, or ridiculous mystic forge recipes. The only decent skins in the game that can be reliably obtained (i.e. not rare loot) without using the mystic force or gem store, are all rares, not level 80, or both. Cultural weapons come to mind. The Seraph and Ebon Vanguard weapon sets are great, but I'd have to use transmutation crystals to switch them to max stats.

That's a bit off topic though. In regards to the incredibly small amount of good skins in the game, I really wish the hammer had more options. There's only maybe 2 or 3 hammers in the entire game that I like, and of those, one is a legendary and another is the precursor, and yet another costs hundreds of gold on the tp. Which basically just leaves me with Seraph/Golden, and even that feels underwhelming.

GW2's weapon and armor skins are very unappealing compared to GW1's. I must have had at least a dozen different suits of elite armor for my warrior in GW1, because almost all of those suits were individually very aesthetic and appealing. In GW2...I struggle to find more than one set of decent looking armor. And so far, by what I feel may not be less than a coincidence, the only heavy armor skins I really like are mid-game skins like pit fighter and splint. God forbid I ever have to run around in draconic or the named heavy set.

Yes the legendary greatswords are flat as in literary flat but they are not boring or plain looking by any stretch and they are also well proportioned: heel to blade length and width ratio.

There are literally no decent weapon skins worth getting for my Thief. I do like the Fused Shortbow but it's acquisition wasn't exactly fun or engaging.

See, I'm the opposite - I find that too many weapons, especially the greatswords, swords, and daggers, are too big. My mesmer uses the AC greatsword and sylvari t3 sword, because they're the only ones that are actually decently sized and not massively wide. My necro has a fractal dagger and the thing may as well be a sword, for the size of it.

I'd really like some swords that are more like rapiers back, to be honest. They existed in GW1, why don't they now?

In all honesty, that was my immediate thought and subsequent reaction when I came to realise just how visually dire crafted weapons were for one of Tyria's supposed high-ranking hero's. Since then my response has either involved heading to the cash shop - mission accomplished - or being grateful for my hindsight in GW1 by getting 30 points in the ‘Hall of Monuments’.

It would have not been that difficult to create a set of crafted weapon skins that were understated but still looked decent. Arenanet could have easily created themed variants of the Ghastly Weapons, without the special effect, or even the pact Vigil weapons. Hell, Arenanet could have looked close to home for inspiration including places such as Aion. I personally would of loved to have been able to craft an exotic variant of Kaliga’s collection, a much loved example being Kaliga’s Greatsword.

My opinion is you have three basic choices when designing a MMORPG with reguards to weapons and armor:

1.  Make visually pleasing weapons/armor in a large variety, but they all have equal power
2.  Make limited variety of bland weapons/armor, but have a variety of powerful stats
3.  A combination of the above options.

GW2 has option number 3.  Too bad it is the "limited variety of bland weapons/armor, but they all have equal power" combo.

I would be ok with the current selection of skins if:

A. There were random stats applied to them on drop
B. Crafted weapons were more powerful than drops but account bound (including Legendary)
C. There was a larger seperation of stats for each tier including Legendary

The hammer design in this game really needs some love. I mean, the artists/programmers did such a wonderful job with GW1's hammers, why can't we get more of those hammers via mystic toilet (ugh), the cash shop (I'd pay for some gems just to get the Tormented hammer) or even as exotic drops?

Look at the gallery of hammers here: http://wiki.guildwar...lery_of_hammers. More of stuff like this would be awesome.

I suppose there's a complaint about everything, especially when it concerns something like 'tastes'.
I have had no trouble finding a unique and fitting set of weapons for each of my characters. There may be a lot of tripe, but even that can be stylish in the right setting.

You know what, I recently started playing wow again, trying to get my warrior at 90 and do some PvP cuz I really missed that and while lvl-ing my char I quickly stumbled on the greens that replace you epics just like every expansion but this is the first time I ever said to myself: "Hmmm this gear looks really good for being a peice of shit green item" , that being something I would never say back when I used to play wow on a daily basis expansion to expansion and I realized the only possible reason for me saying that is because I played so much GW2 recently that I've been conditioned to think that armor and especially weapons HAVE to look like shit:(

My problem lies more with the fact that there's so little skins. I find it incredibly dissapointing that a level 80 sword will look exactly the same as a level 20 or even level 5 sword for example. Every "tier" it's just the same batch of weapons, only with higher stats and level requirement. And the Gemstore(as well as the HoM rewards) seem to be completely in favour of Warriors and Guardians. Swords, maces, shields, heavy armors, more swords, more shields...  where's our fancy light armor that doesn't look the same as the previous set you wore, aside from a few straps and a change of headwear? Where's our Medium armor that isn't just another damn trenchcoat? Where's our awesome staff skins that don't look like the level 1 staff with a few tiny green runes flying around it?
