This survey is ANONYMOUS!

Please participate if you wish. This is a survey I made to cart the amount of gems people buy and for what they use these for. Yes you can also answer if you DO NOT buy gems :)

Please make sure you READ the questions as some will ask you to answer only A or B depending on your answer, this is important. Thank you!

Not sure where to put this, feel free to move it if it's in a totally wrong place!

https://docs.google....XVXBM4/viewform

If you wanna share the link to the survey with anyone: http://tiny.cc/ttggxw

On the GW2 forum(I'm assuming it may be removed but want to reach those people too):
https://forum-en.gui...Gemstore-Survey

If you choose to participate, thank you so much!

I will probably release the answers at some point if this is something the majority would enjoy to know!

I will not go to another site to a survey you posted on this site.

But anyway... I also won't "buy" gems just to "buy" something I could have
just as easily bought with the gold I bought the gems with.

I was going to buy an extra storage slot, but when the only option was to
buy gems with gold and then use those gems to buy storage ... I said "screw
it". When they make it either-or I'll do business with them.

I've bought three character slots, two bank tabs, the Super Adventure Box minis, a character name change, and 20 transmutation crystals since launch. I would say about 25% of the gems needed to buy that stuff was purchased with in-game gold, and the character and bank slots were purchased when they went on sale.

I refuse to buy boosts or dyes with money. I really don't like spending cash on temporary things, and I hate that I can't earn transmutation crystals (excluding the tiny chance of getting five from map completion or dailies). But the fact that I can buy gems with gold makes me a little more willing to accept it.

I'd love to see the results of this in a few days, once enough people have taken it.

It's posted on google.docs man. It won't hack your account or eat your soul. I mean, we can trust google right?

I took my part and answered it. Would be nice to have some substantial data to rub on people's faces.

Filled it in:) may I ask why you chose to separate into A and B? What about people who did both ? ( ie paid with ingame currency and real money).

Lmao, like Desild say. It's google docs so it's safe to use haha! You don't have to write in any information of your accounts neither does it require any log in. Neither does it ask for any information regarding your account except for anonymously what you spend your gems on! ^^

Thank you to everyone who participate!

@Coren: It's mainly to cart those who spend real life money with gems which is why I separated them. You're free to answer both. I may make a little bar of that as well. Or I can make a completely new survey carting those who convert gems to gold. Since that's an interesting subject as well!

Here's a thought. When you're done with the data, I can toss it in my SPSS and see if there's any correlation between how people acquire gems and how they spend them. With all sorts of data analysis, like means, frequencies, significance, Matt-Winsconsin W test... The works!

I have a hunch that people who don't spend actual money on gems use them conservatively. Like, only the essential stuff, like bank tabs and customization kits.

And as result, ArenaNet keeps putting more inciting items on their shop, thinking that the reason people don't spend money in it is because the items are boring or lacklustre, when in fact, it's because we're cheap.

Now that would be something.

Yeah, I put it there. Not really knowing where to put it and I know they are very strict so I figured I'd stay safe. Is there anywhere I should I have put it? I can always ask to have the thread deleted and make it again somewhere else ~

how indicative would a survey like this be though?  total Guru registered members (67,140) make up 2.24% of GW2 playerbase judging from total sales numbers (3mil for simplicity's sake).  the actual active poster count is around less than a 1000 registered members.

im not saying the data collected would be worthless - i am genuinely interested in these results and i respect what you are doing however, im more concerned with how you plan on broadening this survey's audience pool so that we can get proper representation.

Ah. The "Guild Wars 2 Discussion" section sees the most traffic on those forums. I've seen surveys posted there without being taken down before, so I'd say it's safe for you to post yours there as well. You shouldn't have any problems with the mods so long as you keep the thread description and opening post unbiased.

I bought the collector edition, which was very expensive, thinking the game would be awesome, but sadly I was very wrong GW2 was and still is very disappointing to me.
I wont buy a thing with real money for GW2 I just do with what the game will offer me, after all I do not like it as I thought I would, plus I do not like lotteries or RNG, I do not find them fair and most of all I do not like games with them on ..... people get addicted which is not a good idea. I wonder why Anet has it on their game being Americans and not Koreans it's really wrong.

Because a korean company is managing the in-game cash shop (As far as I'm informed, Nexon) thus comes the lot of RNG consumables... sad really, but it's how it is and how it will be

I bought 3 character slots and all the available bank tabs.

I think that's it so far. I'm not gonna spend real money on the gamble junk. Heck, I rarely if ever spend in game money on the gamble junk.

This isn't a scientific survey, it's just to give a rough idea of what people use the gemstore for. I realize I can't get it exact as I we don't know how many people have bought or not bought in their GW2 time. The only people who can tell us 100% what everyone on GW2 has done is ANet them self, I don't think they neither want or see the need to tell us this data ><

I think I've done what I can with giving this survey to as many people as possible. If you wish and you know somewhere to post it feel free to do so! The more the better!

No. You can click the link. Google already knows what you spend your weekends searching I'm sure they aren't gonna do anything scary if you take a survey hosted by them :D

I would say a service probably. Since it was there so short and only for a limited time, not knowing if something like it would ever come back I didn't add it in any of the explanations. I guess you could tick whatever box you feel it fits in really.

Answered the survey.

People shouldn't be so fast at shooting down skeptic people though. It is after all fully possible to get a link to look very legit while still infect it will malicious software and stuff.
A rather good example is the scam-mails from "ArenaNet" being sent out. Everything in those mails does look very much legit and safe and yet they will steal your account if you press use them.

Better to be careful than to lose stuff and then come here whining about losing stuff.

Anyway, I'm not bothering with adding to a player-run poll, I find the notion of them ridiculous especially since some people (not saying you do) expect companies to take those as valid data afterwards.

But I'll chime in in a forum discussion: I bought all my gems with real money, not gold. I have bought nothing based on random results, but bought the wintersday town clothes, almost all direct-sale minis (not the boosters though), and some transmutation stones, as well as bag slots on my main and 3 bank slots so far. I'll continue to buy fixed-price items that I like liberally, and will continue to stay 100% clear of RNG items.

I haven't bought gems much, but the majority of what I have bought went straight to character slots and bank slots.  I'm also fond of gems to gold, though I don't think I've bought any specifically for the purpose: all I've transferred was either change from other purchases or from a gem card I got last Christmas.  I've also purchased some Fine Transmutation Stones (which aren't horrifically expensive via gold to gems) and Wintersday Mystery Boxes (for Festivoo, knowing minis used to combine for him dropped very frequently).

One thing I'll say is that ArenaNet is awfully close to having me spend more, but I need the right items/incentives.  Minis would be much more appealing with a dedicated mini slot; same goes for town clothes if they had an auto-switch option.  Armor and weapon skins are just waiting for one that I'd want to use.  Braham's Shield is the closest to a buy, but it's awfully hard to justify since I don't like using shields on any current professions.  Heck, even RNG boxes could happen if the odds weren't so awful for skins and the like.  Your move, ANet!

After buying character slots I realised I wasn't having fun so chipped in with my bro and got Dead Rising 2: Off the Record for some fun undead action.  Bosses are cheap and annoying but after the GW2 training at least I can smash zombie skulls satisfactorily (spellcheck thump)

Suveries are biased and flawed, i think the ones that would benefit would be Anet but it will still biased but will show from an total anonymity of what people think of the game and its features in game and things to consider from a larger pool then the people here or on the official forums.

But none the less, i took it too.

And why do you think it's biased?

Because people like Azure Skye, being unsavvy of how social sciences work nowadays, are quick to dismiss a valid method of producing data, used by multitudes of disciplines, like Psychology.

Because things like the European Social Survey are a waste of time, since surveys are biased and flawed.

As a Psychologist, surveys are my bread and butter. Nothing drives a point home than slapping some hard data and process it wholey in an essay.

If I want to gage the value people place on their family personal relationships? I use a survey. If I want to determine the atentional bias of people after a pre-test, I use a survey. If I want to determine if ansiety is responsible for adiction habits, I use a freaking survey. Notice a pattern?

Everyone benefits from data. Data is the key to the truth, and against good old fashioned truth, no argument stands. If with this survey I can prove that not only people are not purchasing Gems, but they are conservative about how they spend them, I can surely raise some ruckus. Even a small sample is more than enough to make a valid prediction scenario of how the entire community behaves!

It would rock ArenaNet's flawed notion that people need even more incentive to invest in their cash shop. Up to the point that they cease to add rewards to the game and channel everything to it. Every asset placed in that bloody cash shop is a part of the game that is left anguishing in lack of purpose without it.
