I have tried this now about 7 times, all fails.  We seem to be understanding the overall concept of the boss, but at ~10 of his health there is an active debuff that causes you to take constant dmg, even though his shield continues to go back up.  The dmg is enough that from about half health, you will be dead in a matter of seconds, even if you avoid all the mines, and roaming energy.

Anyone been able to finish this yet?  If so.... tips?

I'd check reddit or the official forums.  Rumor has it this patch is bugged to hell and back.
It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

The electrolyze debuff occurs at 20% health and adds 1 stack periodically. Each stack does 250 dps. This definitely should not be bring you down from 50% hp to 0% in seconds. If your party is diligent in removing his shield (it should take a few seconds to remove it every time he brings it up), then he should be dead before an unmanageable amount of electrolyze stacks are on you.

My guild run, which happened to be our first attempt so we did not plan this ahead of time, involved 2 of us delegated to the mine detector (and thus removing his shield) while the rest of the group DPS'd him down. Pretty much the crux of this fight is how fast you can get his shield off.

Yeah, nevermind, it was stupidly easy... you just have to do it in the right way.

It's hard because PUGs can't read. Then I entered a group where one person seemed to understand the boss but he said we should stand atop of a single mine and spam 2,3,4 detector skills on it. Surprisingly, it worked and his health went down VERY fast. I know mines are supposed to strip his bubbles and not damage him but well. I was more focused on avoiding the sparks and keeping myself alive cause the aggro was on me, so maybe somebody was DPSing him.

If you did the patch as it came out you had a bugged Null who would place almost 10 stacks of the end-condition on you (electrification?). It was quickly fixed, but if you constantly see that he is having extra armor, "use a heavy mine," then you're most likely in a bugged instance.

Stupid enrage counter mechanics shouldn't exist *ever*
They serve no purpose other than to frustrate players. If someone solo completes it, then well done to them. Why put in DPS checks?

Because standing around for hours without killing the boss means you are doing something wrong?
It is simply there to inform people that they are doing something wrong. If people are doing it the right way they will have no issues with the "DPS checks" (which I assume is the constant damage after some time?)

Erm, we were doing extremely well as a 3 man team. It was quite challenging with such numbers actually, I'd almost go as far as say it was fun. Then you basically die instantly to DPS check.  As a 5 man team we obviously facerolled it, nigh on zero challenge. I still can't understand why it exists? What if players didn't want to play DPS or GTFO? God forbid anyone tries a condition focused build instead of flavor of the month!

I have serious issue with this feature creeping in. It's a bit of a world of warcraft mechanic. If they keep adding it to bosses like this, there's nothing to say they won't raise the bar entirely for future encounters where the DPS check actually turns into a gear check; i.e. only people running the correct build and the highest ASCENDED gear will be able to complete the encounter before the party wipes.

Then it was bugged, or you guys completely ignored any kind of healing. The constant DPS starts quite late and is quite weak and can easily be outhealed for quite some time.
As for the DPS or GTFO I would say that Condition Damage is actually BETTER in this very dungeon, since it keeps up constant damage, even when you are forced to move/heal while DPS only exists while you are actively focusing on it.

My build is heal centric, and we had a guardian. So I'm guessing bugged then. Either way it's not the point. This sort of checking eventually can creep into stealth GEAR CHECKING. That's my real concern.
