Something happened to me last night that I thought was sufficiently great to tell everyone about here on GW2Guru.

I was playing Sanctum Sprint, and due to a combination of truly awful lag (I'm in New Zealand, and my ping is horrendous) and my own inherent lack of skill I was solidly bringing up the rear of the group. My personal best was 7th and I'm not entirely sure how I even did that well.

Then the awesome thing happened. The group I was playing with had been reasonably consistent and so a couple of other sprinters started asking who hadn't got the achievement yet. As a result of this, those who had the achievement would wait at the finish line and /dance or /sit until a first-time winner came on through.

Eventually, I think I was the last person in the group without the achievement and the whole group followed along behind me. While I must admit I felt like the special kid who needs a crash helmet to play in the sandpit it was really cool for everyone to put their own needs aside so that someone else could get something out of the race.

I eventually finished in first place and got the achievement and title (which I'll be too embarrassed to ever wear) and to make the evening even better I got a windcatcher skin from the end chest.

To those who were there: You guys rock and I hope precursors drop for you in the near future.

tl;dr An entire group of players followed me through Sanctum Sprint to allow me to get the achievement despite me being rubbish. It made me feel all warm and fluffy inside.

Haha that's awesome. Back in winters day, me and 2 other people on our team got everyone in our game to not fight and instead take turns letting everybody get the necessary achievements ( making someone drop a present, picking up present etc) it was hilarious and confusing. But there was 1 troll on the other team that would just run it and attack everyone not on his team and he reported us all for "glitch ing" the game. Nobody got banned lol. But it was a fun experience. Me and my buddy were the first 2 to finish the achievements but we still stayed and helped for along time

I was in 2nd place today, still minus both the 1st and Place in Top 3 achievements, and when I got to the finish line the person in 1st kindly waited for me to cross before them. I don't usually have a lot of time to play, so who knows how much time and effort this gentleman or lady saved me :) I'll definitely be returning the favour to other players later on when I have a few more runs.

Since coming first seems to have little impact on your rewards I've been doing this too ^^

Reminds me of Crab Toss when people were trying to get crabtactular by standing together to get rolled over for everyone in the match..

Did my last 10 games today for the 25 games achievement and I've seen that a lot in there too. One of the people participating was so happy about my pre-goal nap, sleeping on the side-line, he sent me 15 gold.

Thought that was some nice karma-play going on :D

Wow, that is truly awesome man. I really feel that this game emphasizes teamwork (for example, the fact that resurrecting people gives you exp) and I appreciate when someone stops in their tracks to help a stranger out for a few seconds. It really makes this game that much more of an enjoyable experience.

Yeah, I don't see enough of this.  When I played during the day, it was definitely a competitive scene with one guy who knew how to lay traps and did it like clockwork each time... he knew the choke points, which I normally wouldn't mind if it were all in fun, but they tied an achievement to first place, so I was playing to win.  When a lucky streak let me win later in the day, I announced "Got mine, I'm going to half-ass it from here on."  Mind you, I still played to place high, but I wasn't trying to take lead.

It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

We kept this "cooperative racing" group working similarly for 9 hours (Don't believe me? I have 60 Thimbles to prove it), got a lot of people their achieves but...unfortunately, when it came time for me to get mine, the majority of the group was..not so cooperative. But, for the people that did and will get their achievement this way, I think it's honestly the best feeling in the world knowing that there's actually a game out there that supports cooperation. GW2's community is honestly one of the best communities I've ever played with.

I had similar problems with lag, usually starting the races a few minutes after everyone else.  I managed to get into 2nd place right before the end during a race, thinking that was the best I'd be able to get out of it and was pretty surprised to see the guy in first stop before the finish line to let others get the achievement.

It's great to see people being so considerate and it helped turn what otherwise might have been a very frustrating mini-game for an achievement into something I could just legitimately enjoy for fun.

No such luck here, I've lost count of how many races I've entered and I still haven't got the 1st place achievement.

That's awesome!!  I play a ftp/ptw model game called Perfect World and i can tell you right now nobody, and i mean nobody, would let you win.  People there don't care, being behind a screen gives them no accountability.  Awesome to hear some games transcend, even for a moment, from the typical gamer dushbagggery.

Yeah, some people were nice enough to help me get a victory, but there would always be someone who showed up only once, get first and then leave immediately because waiting was a problem. I still have never gained a victory, but at this point, I don't care. Trust me, getting 2nd 10 times in a row and still being on the top of the "most points" list really does suck the life out of your mentality.

Why would they?  Quite a few players dumped thousands of dollars into their gear so they would always come out on top.  The warm fuzzy feeling you get from helping the less fortunate isn't enough for those types of people.  The people in vanilla r8 or lower were generally nicer and more willing to help others.  Unfortunately, those weren't the people in a position to let anyone win since they were the ones constantly getting steamrolled.

As for GW2 and the sprint... I decided to go for the achievements after a couple of drinks and learned that it wasn't the brightest idea.  A couple of people were stopping at the line so the slow pokes like me could get our title.  (Thanks again if you guys are reading this!)  I eventually started winning legit and hung back so others could cross before me.  Unfortunately, it's hard to get everyone on the same page and the people I was trying to help eventually left since people with the title didn't want to hang back with me... you know, because the rewards are soooo much better for placing first.  I tried!

I wonder if this thread would exist if there were better rewards for placing in the top 3!  :P

Whenever I see people organizing win-trading, I make it a point to get 1st.
What can they say, aside from "Stop being so good"?

Position - and I mean position in the world - can, unfortunately, be a big deal in Sanctum Sprint. Latency can hurt a lot when it comes to stopping a sun dash from going too far, and from discussion on the official forum the lightning pull bug seems to happen most to people with higher latency. I have about a 30% failure rate on lightning pulls, and that's when pulling to a beacon where I know there's been no interference from other players - that means that in my experience winning is really more a matter of luck (not being too punished by the lightning pull bug) than skill.

I eventually got it legitimately, but my title award came because the rest of the people I was running with saw me lose first place due to the lightning pull bug several times and had pity.
Got any comments or queries about moderation in one of my spheres of responsibility? Make sure I get the message!

It's way more rewarding when you get good at something and achieve it. That's why they're "achievements".
If you can't do it, why are you entitled to get it?

While I definately agree that things are way more rewarding when you can do it yourself. But I also don't see anything wrong with wanting or actually helping others achieve.

Because it doesn't even necessarily involve any sort of skill. You got absolutely nothing to win, there's no achievement for being first more than one time, so why ruin it for those who have troubles with it for whatever reason? (Aussie-/Asian-Pings come to mind)

I have fun being first in there too, but I don't have to walk first across the finish line just to get satisfaction from it. If I wait right before the finish line for the others to run through before me to get their stuff, I still know I would have won AND a good deed has been done.

I don't know, I lose zero and might make someone else's day. *shrugs*

If it doesn't involve any sort of skill, why can I rely on myself to place within the first 3 every time I decide to do it? :3c

See, I wait by the finish line - and typically, 10s or so later, 2nd place comes around the bend - then I cross.
It's funny - in MvC3, there's an achievement for winning 10 ranked matches in a row.
Should I be throwing matches when I have someone down to 1 character with a sliver of health just to help them get the achievement?

Achievements are side-things. They aren't primary content. I think the race is more valuable as content when it isn't devalued by win-trading.

For a crowd that's all like "play how you want!" I gotta laugh at people who get upset when one person who plays how they want is apparently a dick because they don't throw a race so someone can get an achievement.

The crowd is all "Play how you want" - as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone else's enjoyment of the game. That's pretty much the entire intention of GW2 game design. They're probably also annoyed because it takes a lot of effort to get a group of strangers to agree to let a certain person come in first.
