Personally I think measuring value as sell-able assets is a more standard. Gold, especially in game, is meant to be spent. Sure saving is fine if it's for a specific purpose and having a small amount for random things that crop up or whatever is fine; but overall, why have thousands of gold sitting in the bank with all your characters being poor in terms of equipment or account/soul bound items?
Whether you value armour/weapon skins, minis, dyes, gem store items or anything else, the money spent on it surely matters; you still have that worth on your account.
That being said; liquid assets for me right now is about 250g, with a bunch of mats... been saving recently as I've nothing to really spend it on atm, although each patch usually brings something to tempt me away from my gold.
I must have spent 8-10k gold though across my whole account; it's kind of frightening.
