As of today there's now a giant tent and construction sounds coming from what used to be a giant hole in Divinity's Reach. Curious to know what all of you think this might be. August living story, anyone?

A tent, you say. A new Circus themed living story, perchance?

Thanks or posting this, Neo.  Perhaps a way into the Crystal desert.. or investigations in the sewers of DR?

The tent is there to hide what sort of thing is being built for now. The end result is not going to be a tent...

I'm guessing this will be completed by the time the game retails in Asia. It may not have anything to do with the living story, and it might not be particularly Canthan either, but it is a big gaping hole in the premiere noob city that could use some plugging.

Wasn't there supposed to be a Canthan district in Divinity's Reach that wound up being scrapped, resulting in the great collapse instead? Maybe the canthan district will return!

You know i was wondering when all that construction in divinity's reach was gonna actually go somewhere. Hopefully this means their will be more little gems like this in others towns like ebon hawke in the future that we the players will have to figure out ourselves.

The living story image has "QJ" in the file name and the current event has CP(Cutthroat Politics) so I'm assuming that the next event may have something to do with Queen Jennah, the hole in the Canthan district, and/or Ebonhawke based on the image

Not a problem. It's just the image on the "Releases" page on the official site. Here's the imagePosted Image
The URL for the image has "QJ" in the spot where the previous image has "CP"

Well, its not Cantha.

So, I’m not going to spoil anything but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that according to game lore, there was never a Canthan district. If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that the great collapse was formally an arts district.

Just a final quick note, I’m certainly not denying that at one point a Canthan district was planned and partially implemented. But the actual lore of the district that the game shipped doesn’t support it very well right now.

I think it’s great that you guys are fans of Cantha and I would personally like to see it in the game as well. But what you’ll be finding under that tent (very soon) is not Canthan. I’m just making assumptions here, but if we did return to Cantha I suspect it would be a really big deal, way too big to fit under the even largest of tents, or even in an existing city at all.

I wonder if they're going to provide a way to get to the bottom of that hole. There's a lot of ruins down there. I hope they don't just reskin it into something boring. Exploring that labyrinth would be entertaining.

I am hoing for something like Undermountain from Forgotten Realms (Dungeons and Dragons): a huge dungeon under the city.

Or the entrance to a labyrinth dungeon??  Fun! Maybe crypt themed? I miss killing those GW1 skeletons :)

Finally!! I remember on release going round Divinity's Reach and being super curious about the freaking massive hole, and expecting it to appear in the living story...no, instead we just got told, 'yup, the ground collapsed.'

I don't care if it has nothing to do with Cantha, even going down and exploring the sewers would be pretty neat.

When people want to explore sewers that's when you realise we are starved for new explorable  zones, right Anet?
For those of you who forgot there's a partially collapsed Asura lab under the city.

Since the zepherites are leaving in a few weeks maybe that area will be their new home if there is a trade deal. Probably not but just a guess.

I find it rather hilarious(and a bit disturbing) that a game dev seems to think that because a particular content piece got cut out of the final product, that means it never existed at all.  ...yikes.

On the point of that, if you look at the coming soon image... could that be Evon Gnashblade, implying he will win?  I actually like your theory.

I have always wanted to explore the labyrinth under Divinity's Reach and climb down that giant hole since the very first time I saw the great collapse, so I am looking forward to seeing what will be revealed.

It appears that you may have misunderstood.

Quote

according to game lore

According to the citizens of Tyria, the Canthan district never existed, because ANet scrapped it. So that particular fictional location never existed, and therefore none of the fictional characters are aware of it due to nonexistence. The authors of the fiction(ANet) revised(removed) it, much like editing a rough draft prior to publishing a written work.

Have these pillars and fountains been there before? Seems they're using these on the "new district". These are the same pillars they use in the Royal Palace so I'm expecting something royal/rich.

Man, Konig ripped that dev a new one...  citing in-game dialogue that proves there was a Canthan district in DR!  I've been on the wrong side of Konig myself, and it is not pleasant.

That said, it looks like a ret-con is planned.  The new area is likely a "Royal Terrace" and will have something to do with Queen Jennah.

Retcons suck, but they can also be a source of pride at knowing obscure references.... like what a Kyhlo Axe refers to in the first GW1.

I'll just quote what Konig wrote as a reply to that considering he says it way better than I ever could have =]

Quote

According to Ree it was a Canthan district…
Unless she was stating the design history and the lore history in the same sentence. I forgot where the interview was (I think it was a TowerTalk interview about humanity’s lore), but Ree explicitly stated that the collapse happened because of a rush in establishing the foundations, and in the same answer explained it was the Canthan district.

Aside from Ree’s statement, in the Order of Whispers personal story step Suspicious Activity you are able to ask Valenze and the others about the person you’re going to investigate, and she says:
“He was born and raised in the Canthan areas of Divinity’s Reach. He worked in the gladitorial arena until he was injured. "

I'm okay with retconning if the lore was stuffy/didn't allow for further development (like how League of Legends has been retconning some of their champion lore) but I don't see how this is a good type of retcon. Pretty disappointed now.

Breathing a sigh of relief that it's not Cantha-related. Didn't care for that continent or the Factions campaign.

Yeah I've heard something (from mined dat files) about an area with all the convenience npcs in (crafting, bank, tp etc) which you have to pay with some kind of token to get into? Would be pretty disappointed if it was a major part of the update, as personally wp'ing or running a little is not much more than inconvenience for me.

Question, feedback or issue? Pm me!
