I started the game with a warrior and played him all the way to 80, second was a ranger and I thought ah nice and easy plus I like the pet so I thought I would keep as my main, then came an Elemementalist, got deleted at lvl 19, Mesmer deleted at lvl 9, but I thought ohh I like the Necro but was not too impressed, my Guardian tho I thought fo-sho he is the one, but, along came the engi and then the thief.
I have finally settled on the engi as main and ranger as second best choice.
It is just funny that at some point or other each char was thought of as the main one. Only once I reached 80 with all of them I was able to narrow it down. I do like the engineer the best.
Will not bother with Mesmer but some day I might make an elementalist, he used to be my main in GW1.
So my main changed 6 times.

I was like that during beta, but at launch my main was warrior, and he's still one of my mains (have another warrior too) but guardian changed to be my main in about October and been that since. I do have 5 "mains" in a way, and 12 total characters which I like and try to play (well there are 2 black sheep I don't get along with but.. :D)

Question, feedback or issue? Pm me!

Also I do have eight 80 level characters of all classes on my account.

Surprisingly it hasn't changed. My main was and always has been a guardian. Although warrior has grown to be a very close second.

Once, during beta.

Was planning on maining a Mesmer as I did in gw1 (even went to the trouble of making my avatar here and making my Mesmer look the same) but I fell in love with the engi during beta. Have all profs at 80 now apart from ranger which is 51 but nothing compares to that special charm the engi has.

Started with my Necro to level 80. Once I got him to around like 400 surplus skill points and maxed out all his equipment to become exotic and made about two armor sets.
Then, I started working on my Assassin, got her to level 80 and stuck on it for another 50 surplus skill points after purchasing everything and got her Cultural T3 Armor.
Then I went back to my Necro to recover some money and help earn exotic weapons for my Assassin afterwards, then worked on my Guardian to level 80, with a few surplus skill points and made two transmuted exotic outfits with Cultural T3 and Dungeon stuff....
Then back to my Necro... and going on and off with four other characters as I slowly work on them to level 80...

Basically, my Necro remains as my main guy I use for just about everything. But I switch focus to certain professions in order to get certain goals done in terms of aesthetics and completion. Or I would just use my Necro to earn the money/tokens to get the equipment my other characters would need. He is my go to guy.

I don't really understand the concept of main.  Does it mean the character I like best?  The character I play the most?  The one with the highest progression? I have eight characters one of each class.  I tend to play them all fairly regularly. Each character has its pros and cons.  I am not sure which I would call my main.

Which character would you choose to represent yourself in an imaginary GW2 movie?

Been swapping between Mesmer and Warrior since beta. Warrior was my first 80(Norn), but only because the human(mesmer) starting mission was bugged for me on release, so I ended up leveling the warrior to 80 first. Mesmer dinged 80 before the Halloween patch though, and I basically consider both characters my 'main' at this point.
I play them equally, and have put roughly even amount of time/effort into their gear, story, looks, etc, and have a spec I'm happy with for spvp on both of them which I play here and there (I pvp infrequently). I log on to which ever one I happen to feel like when I open the game, and they end up getting about the same amount of play time.
I've got a Thief, Elementalist and Ranger between level 25 and 50 which I play here and there as well.

Only thing that sucks about my choice of mains is that they ended up being part of that so called 'dungeon trinity', which makes it feel cheap to play them... x.x Luckily that has faded out.

I don't have a main: the vertical progression limits my interest in fully equipping a character (as I said before, I use CoF armour because I like doing CoF and I have tokens lying around, I use rare weapons because while I do CoF I don't do enough of CoF to be able to buy my guys weapons also and I use green trinkets because they are a few silver and I see no point in going after max trinkets because the grind for getting best in slots gear is simply too exhausting) and the insanely shallow classes themselves prevent me from being able to stick with a single guy: I need to rotate characters to not get bored.
With that said: I pretty much narrowed it down to a warrior, guardian, necro, ranger, thief and engineer as the guys that I play, depending on my mood. I parked my mesmer at the end of a jumping puzzle, so that I can just log into the guy and get a potential +1 daily JP without actually having to do the JP (and that's all the action he sees) and I don't have an ele.

I think mine changes everyday. I leveled them all to 80, and usually pick a different one each day to do dailies, WvW, and checklist farming. And then randomly gear them up. I play them equally, but if I had to choose one it would be my Ranger. Thats the one I leveled first, best geared, and most fun for me to play in WvW. In a way, my "main" never changed. But it changes all the time.

Twice. I was torn between starting the game with either a mesmer or a guardian. I ended up starting off with a mesmer with the idea of being a condition mesmer as I was in love with chaos storm and scepter 3 lol. I soon saw it wouldn't really go anywhere like that and I started switching between different weapons but nothing really held my interest by the time I got lvl 40ish. So I restarted with a guardian and took it to 80. I was confident in keeping it as main and geared it up, but since I didn't want to leave my mesmer at 40 I decided to suck it up and power through and lvl it till 80. In the end as I was lvling it I discovered the weapons I liked and how I want to play the class, and couldn't really leave it at 80 sitting and geared it up aswell and turned it back into my main.

However I never really dropped my guardian and I'm pretty much gearing both classes up and playing them equally. I just consider my mesmer to be my main as it was the first class I decided to gear up with ascended and infused stuff and it's the class I did 100% exploration with and that I'm planning to make a legendary weapon for.

Started off Mesmer, and enjoyed leveling her.  Got geared up in condition damage exotics and ascended and the confusion nerf hit.

Mained ele for a long time and really enjoyed him, but eventually got tired of it.

Mained engie for a short while.  Condition grenades, but frustrated by the lack of damage to objects.  (I can set fire to ghosts and ice elementals, but not a door?!?)

Am now maining a guardian.  Planning on finally getting world complete on this character.

During beta my main was a human ranger - on launch I attempted a ranger again, then guardian; non of them made it past level 15 before being deleted. Then for unknown reasons I tried out the engineer and I don't know why but it stuck. He's the guy I keep going back to for farming and spoiling: he's the sugar daddy of my account you could say.
Despite now having a level 80 guardian and a soon to be level 80 warrior - so far nothing has been as fun or as comfortable as playing the engineer.

It helps that he's cute as hell too. He's fun to watch. X3c

Started with a Warrior got him to 80, geared him out with exos, ran the usual content, got bored.

Rolled the following and leveled to various stages before deleting: Engi, Thief, Necro.  I am sure their flavor appeals to some folks, but I just could not get excited them.

Took the following all to 80: Ele, Mesmer, Guardian.

Really liked the Guardian and have been maining it  for about 4 months now, doing mostly WvW.

Deleted Ele to make space to try a Necro, but not that motivated to level it.

The third class I like is the Mesmer, which is level 80 but has quite a ways to go in terms of gear.  I take her out occasionally to play around with portals, etc.

Spend most of my time in the guardian in WvW, but when action is off or I just want a break, I spend some time rebuilding my warrior as a zerker GS/Axe/Mace DPS machine for dungeons.  I like to use it for world chests and champions, and daylies.

I started out with a warrior, played her for a couple of month, got map completion, etc. lvled a thief and an ele, decided to try out guardian and fell in love. :) I currently have 3 lvl80 guardians x.x (hi, my name is Xephyr and I have a problem) though I currently consider my sylvari guardian my main since she's the one with the most expensive gear, 45AR, foefire's essence, etc. Although, once I finish sunrise (only got dawn left) I plan to make my norn guardian my main. :)

Made a point to try all classes during beta, so at headstart/release I thought I had a good idea of what class I wanted my main to be.  Got a Guardian to 80, because I enjoyed it the most during beta.  Got bored of it, and got a Warrior to 80.  Got bored of it even faster.  Got around to Mesmer, and still not bored of it after all this time :)  I had 100 hours on the character by the time it was level 30 because of all the s/tpvp I'd done with it, and though it was a bit discouraging at the time to have a disproportionately large amount of hours compared to level, it helped me realize that I really do like Mesmer the best, even in PvE content.  It's a more dynamic profession than the other two, I guess.  Mesmer is now my main, with Guardian being a close second.  Still don't like my Warrior all that much.

My main was a guardian because I wanted to support my friends who wanted thieves, rangers, mesmers and so on. Then they all quit the game one at a time within the first month or two. So I went back to my true love, the Elementalist.

I've changed my main once. I went from a Ranger to a Guardian. Best choice I ever made in this game.
Back in January I was like: Oh well, I did enjoy ranger, but the class feels broken/too weak. They'll probably fix it in a month or two.

Sadly enough Ranger still isn't any fun to play to be honest. I've been trying other classes aswell, but nothing beats my guardian. Soon I'll equip him with a Twilight, maybe then I'll have time to look for another 2nd main.

I've played a few different professions up to level 80, but I don't know that I would say that my main has changed each time I've run a toon up to 80.

Started with Ele when I first started playing, wasn't really impressed, swapped to thief which was my first 80. At that point (and for a while after) I considered her my main.  Then came a Warrior whom I leveled to 80 and was bored out of my skull by then.  Then back to Ele, which I hit 80 with and enjoyed for the most part.  Then my second thief.  My little Asuran thief who probably should be medicated for ADHD because how spastic his combat is.  He is definitely my main, even though I'm currently working on an engi, necro and ranger up to 80.  I don't think my Asuran thief will ever be replaced as my main because he's just so damn fun to play. :)

So to answer the OPs question...I think only once.

My first character was a human Guardian, i guess it counts as a maib because it was my first level 80. Then I didnt play him for a while and made a charr Necromancer and he also got to level 80, did full exploration with him. After that i made an engineer, never became main tho, just had him fully geared and then barely touched him outside of pvp. Then there was my Warrior, became my main since at the time Warriors was insane in PvE. Played him through fractals. But, as always i got bored and made a Mesmer, which is my current main.

BUT, to answer.. I change main probably every week.I guess I'm too easily bored and I love getting new armorsets for my characters. I have six lvl 80's: Necromancer x2, Guardian, Engineer, Warrior and a Mesmer. But my Main cycle or whatever to call it is between Guardian, warrior, one of the necros and my mesmer.

I switch up between my engineer, guardian and mesmer. Even though I'm getting less use out of my mesmer than before, she's still the one whose skills I'm most familiar with and the one who has the the most time spent playing.

First main was a Necro, which got left in favor of a Bleeder Thief, which got left at level 65 for a new Necro.

Necro was my first love, and even after leveling a new Thief, a Mesmer, a Guardian, and a Ranger, it remains the toon I always come back to.

Though Loperdos was perilously close to getting me to switch mains to my Thief. :)
