One of the CMs, Emily Diehl, was sending tweets from the dev panel as it happened.
Enjoy!

Guild Wars 2 Twitter
At NYCC, waiting for Colin and Eric's panel to start. We'll update you guys on what's going on right here. Live coverage! Yay! ~ED

Eric: There are three main things we want to accomplish in GW2 - make combat more exciting, make the game a great RPG, make it social.

Eric: Combat is very visual. For instance, when you cast a fireball, you'll the the ring of fire on the ground before it hits.

Eric: We want GW2 combat to live in the moment where you're constantly monitoring the battlefield and actively adjusting to what's going on.

Colin: "The whole point of an MMO is that you're supposed to be in a world, playing alongside other players."

Colin talks personal story. Even if you make similar choices as a friend, our branching storylines create a lot of variation and diversity.

The asura home district will be your own personal lab. How cool is that? :)

Colin: "We want to to be able to make choices that really matter". Lots of cool info about stories! Now the guys are starting an open Q&A.

Eric: Every dungeon has a unique armor and weapon set. At the end of a run, you get a token so you can exchange for the exact piece you want

Remaining four professions: at least one is a returning profession, at least one is similar with a different name, and at least one is new.

There will be an auction house. This will have both in-game and web parts, and will be a really robust and cool feature.
If its the mesmer thats not had its changed, i think that the probabiltiy of it being the next profession 2 be revealed may go up, though is still think next will be revamped assassin will be next anyways. As i think they would save the most changed/newest till last

As Athariel and Builtintoilet said, I think Mesmer will be the returning profession, Assassin will be the one with a new name, and I think (hope :p) that there will also be an Engineer-type profession. Also loving the fact that Asura have a lab as a home instance :D

personally, I think the mesmer will change, I know it's unique and all, but they stated that GW2 is reaching out to a broader audience, most would understand an assassin more (though I agree rogue/thief probably more-so) but mesmer is just too 'out-there' (though that's Arenanet's norm) Guess I can see both ways...

REALLY excited about the Asura home instance now, soooooo fitting. Thank you arenanet. This also means we could be seeing different things for the other 3 races as well. Charr being maybe dealing with it's warband encampment. Sylvari has some tree canopy, and norn having their own -halla/stead.

If the book Ghosts of Ascalon is cannon ,then my guess for the returning profession is the......
I don't want to spoil the book for anyone.

They changed the Necromancer, but kept the name because it was still identifiable profession. I expect the Mesmer will return with name intact, despite whatever changes to mechanics of the profession.

The Assassin will likely get a major overhaul as it's no longer going to be melee centric. I think it's going focus heavily on guns and bombs (traps) and stealth. I can see the Assassin name being changed.

lets not jump to conclusions now. We still have another soldier profession to come out, and it could be similar to the paragon with a different name too.

Plenty of the new game mechanics still allow a class to be Melee-centric while offering a lot more utility to their Allies than was previously offered in GW1.  ...I'd argue that a Saboteur /w Touch skills & moveable Control Wards could become the most overpowered support class in the game now that Healers are dead & gone.  If they get Stealth too, WvW'er gonna raeg pretty hard.   And yes, "Perception" is specifically mentioned as an attribute that's increased in Traits & Armor bonuses which means stealth is the most likely counter trait.

Elaboration on Touch Skills & Wards:  #1:  Touch skills were and still are the hardest thing to counter in Gw1... the only skill that even attempts to mitigate them is a shout that can be prevented with Vocal Minority.  #2:  One of the Sin's specialties was Deadly Arts but since hexes don't exist in GW2 but positional mechanics do, and in greater quantity, it only makes sense then that deadly arts will become a position based skill set like traps & marks.

My thoughts exactly. Lol we already knew:

2 professions would be returning, but would be revamped possibly enough to equate to a name change.

When we read about mesmers in the book, we figured Mesmers wouldn't get a name change, so Assassin would be the one (based on concept art).

All they did was confirm what we already thought, which is nice, I suppose. :D

You and everyone else. xD How many times do I have to tell people you can't really "call something" when either 1: it's a random guess or 2: It's so obvious everyone knows or 3: Someone not on this forum could have thought of it LONG before you?

xD Honestly...

I don't think assassin's are getting a name change.  "At least one" could mean more then one

Example:
Mesmer
Assassin
Blue Mace Lady (Dervish/Monk combo that is similar to those 2, but gets a new name)
Engineer/Gunner Char dude (brand new)

That fits all those criteria as well

^ What he said. " At least one " can still mean mesmer and assassin may be returning.

No, Look at the full quote again:

at least one is a returning profession, at least one is similar with a different name, and at least one is new.

It's a type of paradoxical word play.  ...meaning the 4th(8th) class might be a mix of all 3, or atleast one class is a mix of both.

In other words, it's mind games meant to make us doubt what is obvious:  that A: Mesmer is still gonna be a mesmer, and B: Sin & Rit hate won't stop them from returning either.  ...afterall, every type of major playstyle from Gw1 was already confirmed to be returning in Gw2.  Imbagons are just plain Warriors now.  Necro is STILL a meatshield.  S-way rangers are still Rangers even without the brokenness of Expertise.  And ERs just became that much more vital to endgame raids b/c water attune replaces monks & doubles as control.

I did not know that they said there were be another returning, last I heard they said there were at least two that were changed so much they were renamed, and 2 new. So please don't say dumb stuff like that just because I'm a bit out if the loop. It's really not fair.

I thought the mesmer was going to be renamed, and now I don't because of this. Biiiiig deal. :qq:

As was said: the profession statement was really a non-statement. Saying "at least" before everything only confirms what we already knew and gives no new info. Unfortunately. :(

LoL Sometimes, I think ANet tries to get us to go off in irrelevant tangents. That's not necessarily a bad thing if in doing so we brainstorm something really epic into existence.

That means the the 4th one not revealed will meet one of that 3 affirmations.

Agreed. Btw, why do they use "at least" all the time when talking about the professions?

I wonder what are the remaining three races' home instances...

Norn - a separate (hunting) lodge in Hoelbrak?
Charr - No idea
Sylvari - No idea

The similar one could be a reworked monk class.
Meaning that either Mesmer or Assassin wouldn't be returning :p
