Rumor on official forum, not confirmed by dev.

If true, this combined with crappy B-day present will piss me off.  I hated the ultra-rare minis given at cons and as awards in GW1.

If Arenanet is going to give away free minis, give everyone a chance to get one.

Dunno.

Blizzard at least gave you the chance to purchase a mini for buying a video ticket to BlizzCon, even if you couldn't attend in person.

I love my Deathwing murloc.
It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

I was in the process of trying to get someone to clear next weekend for PAX so they could try to snipe me a code and then found out tickets are sold out.  *grumbles*

<- not a very happy mini collector right now.

This is how Nubcake and Bunbun feel about the situation:

PS:  I also know PAX sells out very fast.  It was worth a shot and the person I was asking sometimes knows people that have tickets.  So far we're not having much luck.

Eh... companies have a history of giving out rare swag at these sorts of conventions.  It's a good/normal gimmick.

PS. PAX sells out within like 48 hours.  So yeah, nobody is getting in JUST for this.

I really don't see the uproar about this.

This is not something new, ArenaNet (and more or less every other MMO devs) have done it several times, and it has even been done in GW2 before.

At least they are account-bound so it won't destroy the market.

Having them account bound also means there is no way for most of us to obtain one.

You could at least buy a Kuunivang or Destroyer in GW1.

I'm hoping this ends up being sort of like the freebies we get in the mail for buying gems.  Maybe they are giving them out to people that attend the conventions as freebies and the rest of us can buy them for gems.  I might be a dreamer...

I could definitely see that being the case here. I wouldn't be surprised if they are available shortly after/during in the gem store.

Swag is a normal thing from conventions. In game swag is also completely normal.

The overabundance of minipets greatly amuses me though.

Little Mabel won't be able to be here it's our worst fear. She's busy working on her garden that she's growing up in space.

What amuses me about them is that they're basically recycled art assets with the same tethered, pathing AI loaded turned into a collectible. :D

It is account bound according to the collection tab and people that were lucky enough to get a code.

Some of us actually do like collecting minis. Get money in the game? You played it the past month? Money's thrown at us. I don't need money. I need a Kuunavang flying around my head again.

Meh,

If minis were halfway as special in gw2 as they were in gw1 i might be upset.  But in GW2 we seem to get minis every time we turn around.

That awesome moment when you get your hands on a code for Mr. Sparkles and then support tells you that the reason why you're unable to redeem it is because someone else already used it.  I'm having a great night!  How about you guys?

No.  It did not come from Ebay or anything like that.  It came from a bag that was handed out at the event today.

OH!  In case anyone missed it... one sold for around $700 on Ebay the other day and there's one on there right now with a starting bid of $100... nevermind, it seems that someone went for the buyout of $555 before I finished typing this post.  My code was either used by someone with access to the bags prior to the event ($700 might make someone tell their conscience to STFU for a minute) or duplicates were accidentally printed.  What a freaking mess!

I've seen some of the reports on people's codes being used which kind of worries me, but someone finally got some response from support that said if you send in a picture of the card they'll manually add it to your account...

That being said. I have one.

And I would really really really like to have Twilight. Money from ebay is cool and all, but I'm not starving to death right now and I don't really want anything worth several hundred bucks.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules or anything, but if anyone's really wanting this I would be willing to trade it for a lot of gold. send me a PM if you're interested. (again sorry if this breaks any rules, I'm just super desperate and tired of grinding)

Allllllllllrighty!  I'm going to start by saying please don't contact me on here or in game if you're trying to buy my code.  It's not for sale.  I really did want the miniature for my collection and the code ended up being trash.  Everyone else is having a problem with their code because of a region lock.  Unfortunately, that's not why my code doesn't work.

I have been going back and forth with support since Saturday.  My ticket was escalated to a supervisor when I made a request for them to make sure my code wasn't being rejected because of the region lock.  This was his response:

Quote

I am sorry but it appears that you have received a code that has already been used on a different game account. I had a look to ensure that there wasn't a mix up, and the code wasn't accidentally used on your boyfriend's account. However, I can confirm that he code was used several days before the Guild Wars 2 Anniversary event, on a different account other than the *editedtoremovename* account that you provided .

The issue that you are seeing on the forums pertains to serial codes that were provided at this event that wrongly set to the wrong region. We are assisting people with this issue only if their code has not already been used.

I am truly sorry that we are unable to assist you in the manner in which you had hoped. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

I'll ask you guys the same question I asked in response to that.  How does a code get used several days before an event if the card with the code printed on it wasn't handed out until the day of the event?  Answer:  duplicates were accidentally printed or someone with access to the cards used the code and put the card back into the pile.  Classy.

I'm not here looking for help or support.  I'm not even trying to tarnish Anet's reputation.  I'm sharing this to prove a point to the people who think there isn't anything wrong with distributing in-game items like this.  Do you honestly think I would be in this situation if they were just handing out tshirts and bandanas?  I enjoy that sort of swag as much as anyone else, but this minipet was far more valuable to me since I'm a collector.  I'm obviously not the only person that feels this way since they are still selling for around $500 on Ebay.  The bandana is going for about $10 and nobody has said anything about one missing from their bag.  (The card wasn't actually missing from the bag, but the code was unusable because someone redeemed it a few days before the event.  You get the point.)

One unlucky person probably doesn't seem like a big deal, but try putting yourself in my shoes.  Pretend the item offered was something you really wanted.  How would you feel?  I can tell you how I feel... like shit.  It could have been avoided.

I requested a new code and provided proof that my boyfriend was in fact at the event on Saturday.  Hopefully there will be a happy ending to this story... so far it's not looking that way, but I'm trying to hang onto that little bit of hope they haven't crushed yet.  I'll update later if I get a response and the mods allow it.  I know how they are about the "QQ support won't help me!" posts.  Personally, I felt like this was more of an eye opener than a QQ piece!  ;)

Please go easy on me if I crossed any lines!

Wow, that's a pretty sad turn of events, Strawberry. =/

What baffles me is that the code was used "several days before the event". Either the account is from someone from Anet or who had early access to this, and Anet did a mistake by giving your boyfriend an already used code (in that case they should simply give you another code to fix their mistake), or as you mentioned someone who had access to the codes used yours - in that case it should be easy to track down that account and retrieve your mini. Simply saying they are sorry and that they can't help you is ridiculous, but not surprising coming from Anet's costumer relation history. I hope you can get this solved eventually!

An extreme example, don't they drop from bday gifts now (not that it matters).

Point is: At least a player had a way to buy minis in GW1.  Why not sell an account bound Mr Sparkles in the gemstore?

A lot of players have been trying to use their codes but when they try to use them to get the mini they are told the code has already been used.

Also now you can see loads of mini mr sparkles have been sold on ebay for hundreds of dollars and more sales have gone up on ebay to sell more codes.

Seems like a complete mess and very badly handled by Anet, I hope they learn from this in the future, after last time everyone complained and was upset about exclusive things being handed out at specific regional game shows I was sure they said they would not do it again, I guess not.

Did support tell them it was used or were they assuming it had been used because they got an error message?  Trying to use the code on a NA account will result in an error because of the region lock.  Support can and will apply those codes if contacted.  So far I am the only person I have seen on here or the official forums reporting a used code.

It's hard to tell exactly what's wrong without contacting support since everyone gets the same generic error message.  ;)

https://forum-en.gui...e-doesn-t-work/
I think I was the only person in that thread with a used code.

I just got an email from support saying they would be making things right by applying a code to my account!  The wording implied that it wasn't an isolated incident, but they didn't specify what went wrong.  Maybe it really was a printing error.  (Edit:  I got another response after inquiring about what happened.  They said I was the only one reporting a used code so far, but they aren't ruling out the possibility of more popping up in the near future since the reason why I ended up with it is still a mystery!  I swear I am the unluckiest person on the planet.  :P)

I'm thrilled that my story had a happy ending, but there's no denying that this was a mess.  It's one of the reasons why giving away in-game items at events isn't an awesome idea!  I love having exclusive stuff.  What I don't enjoy is having to go through what I just did.

Good luck to those of you experiencing similar issues!  Remember to treat the support representatives with respect even if you're frustrated.  I know how hard it can be at times.  ;)
