https://forum-en.gui...giving-gems-etc

So last night an application appeared on Facebook that let you link your GW2 account to the social networking site linked your Facebook account to GW2's Facebook page.

At the very least, 400 gems were offered (I have no idea how they were claimed) for doing so, tho the forum post linked above claimed other rewards were being offered.

As the ArenaNet poster indicated, this was a test of a new application.  And as the rest of the posts indicate, it was not ready for prime-time and was abused by people linking fake FB account names and generating gems ad nauseum.

A source who tipped me off to this is claiming that two friends took advantage of the system to generate 250g and 160g.

This appears to be the second attempt to push GW2's popularity through social media after the failed attempt to reach a million likes on Facebook.  As of this posting, GW2 still only has ~964288 likes on FB.  It should be further noted that while the original campaign had some very passive awards associated with it, this campaign appears to be trying to provide a personal incentive to each Facebook member, as opposed to a large reward at the end.  Gems were not included in the original offering.

Anyone willing to make an image capture of the top-link for posterity?

Edit: Additional link to reddit about this.

It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

I don't even know where to start with the issues I have with this....too long to list and will probably get attacked for it anyway...

Just pathetic on so many levels.

They were genuine gem codes as well but then one source from Anet says it was legit and support tickets are claiming it is not legit...

Not really, im selling out my info for 400 gems, you can count me out and my facebook page is old and underused for years to get any useful info from it.

Yeah, Facebook likes. Apparently they will be worth slightly more than a free Cox Box this time around.

Wait, this could be exploited?! I'll be... That's just terrible. The guys who did it should ashamed of themselves.

The "support" tickets are usually answered by interns who look for the quickest copy and paste reply and the left hand doesn't know what the right hand's doing.

Also, ArenaNet have been in the business for almost a decade. They MUST have thought about how easily exploitable this was.

As long as the Zynga model works, stuff like this is going to happen.

You are fooling yourself, user. Nothing here is what it seems. ANet is not the plucky hero, Guru is not an evil empire, and this is not the grand arena.

Facebook and most other social media are a huge privacy concern, even on smurf accounts. I wont write an essay on that, info is widely available. But for Arenanet to think it's actually acceptable to extort people to get in the middle of that, wow. And to offer bonus gems for referrals? What is this, Candy Crush Saga?

Arenanet keeps finding new lows. If this goes live expect:
- Huge number of exploiters.
- Ensuing crapstorm.
- Community backlash.
- EU commission consumer protection sanctions/fines.

Need I remind you how well even the thought of the idea worked out for Blizzard, as well as the concept of attaching real names to accounts, publicly?

Damn, just spent 500 gems trying to get the new dyes...  note:  probably better if you just buy the dyes you want with gold.

I think, if you vote with your money and your facebook account, this wont happen. I guess the 400 gems is to much for people to pass up or exploit it.

400 gems? Sign me up, I'll like them all day long. For 800 gems I'll give them my home address, and 1600 they can have my SS number.

Privacy is an illusion. I dont see the sense in getting paranoid, if some entity wants your info, its probably not hard to get. If someone does use it for nefarious spending, I would just like to know how they got money under my name when I cant. :D

I know that it is against Facebook's rules to run contests where entries are based on simply liking a page. I wonder how this fits in with that kind of rule...

I just love those idiots who earn big bucks by cheating. I just love them! Way to go to becoming a role-model for your kids!

People will always exploit if given a chance to profit from it !
So they share the blame with people who make it possible for them to cheat !

And on a later note i`m sick of all that FB contests, what about people that don`t use mentioned site (i strongly believe if you didn`t seen someone for 20+ years there`s a pretty good reason for that) !!!

The game's filled with exploiters, right down to not completing an event to force champions to spawn. ArenaNet won't ban their few remaining customers so it sends out the message it's ok to take that risk.

I'd honestly be impressed if they took action against the accounts that did this, but once again, they'll be 500 gold richer and laughing at the face of a company that let this happen.

Raspberry! How could you?!

You should have made a clean 1000g and tore down the entire Gem Economy.

900G, let alone even 400 Gems isn't worth my time on FB. I only use it for family and friends I ACTUALLY know in real life and talk to on a regular basis. I'm not going to whore out my account for some freebees.
