Anyone figure out the secret sauce to Aether Key Piece drops?

I saw 3 drop yesterday while doing my normal open world wood chopping and daily competition.  One in a short TA dungeon run.

But only 1 other drop in probably 5 hours of playing in different open world zones yesterday.

My magic find is about 50%.

Chests. I got a bunch as extra bonus items from champ, puzzle, and dungeon end chests. I only got about 2-3 off enemies, but 6 from various chests. MF was 100ish all day.

I've never seen one drop yet, despite killing hundreds of enemies since this latest patch went live.  I've done a couple dozen world boss events, some open world and JP chests as well, but I have never gotten one from those yet either.  My overall MF is near 100.  From what I've seen so far, these key pieces seem to be an ultra-rare drop.

However, some people in my guild have gotten bunches of them, largely by just killing mobs in the same areas I have.  I guess it's just the fickle nature of RNG.

Over two days play, I have had one drop in the open world for my lvl80 characters.  I have got three or four from doing the new TA path (none from other Dungeons).  I then spent one hour on a low-level character and three dropped in the open world just like that.  Seems little rhyme or reason, so I would say they are just low-probability.

Literally the first thing I killed after logging in post-patch yielded a key piece. Since then I haven't had a single one.

I've had 9-10 drop from killing random enemies in starter zones. MF is at 72%, but I have no idea if that does anything for it. My low-level warrior is a RNG champ though. Been getting super lucky with him on champ boxes, etc.

Got 4 while doing the Aetherpath once.
2 of those drops, other 2 from boss chest iirc.
Then #5 dropped from something during wurm pre and #6 when killing stuff in Timberline.

Though I had 60 wigs, 30 tiaras and 0 dresses drop last time..

Ya I think it's a pretty rare drop.  About the same drop rate of dyes from a mob kill or around 1 out of 100-200 chance or so.  Not counting any anti-farming drop reduction from killing stuff in the same spot in last 24-48 hours.

I saw two more key pieces in about 3 hours of normal playing and resource gathering.  None from chests though.

Saw 7 more drop in about the course of 2 hours, again doing normal events, gathering and such in mid level zones.  So maybe it's a bit more common than dye drops.

You know sometimes I wonder why we even bother, I also got 5 since Tuesday. In the past few months I realised that Anet creates nice weapons most of the times, but the ways and chances for you to get them are slim at best, what they ultimately want is for you to get stuff from the store or buy chest keys.

This time we have to get 5 key pieces to make a key to have a chance at getting an item which is not even new, all they did was change the weapon color from purple to blue WoW and all of this from a chest that you can't even see.

Tell me Anet do you even want us to get stuff from the game? I'm in the process right now of doing like many players have already done and that is to ignore titles and dailies even a lot of the living story and simply go back to enjoying the game in it's basic form until such time that we get stuff that truly connects with the main story of the game.

End of rant.

I've gotten about fifteen key pieces. Most of those were from my two TA Aetherpath runs and, oddly, a Scarlet invasion in Gendarran Fields. I have about 100% Magic Find.

The loot from the chests is not that great. Usually a single green. Do it for the achievements, but don't get bent out of shape about it. You can also buy them on the Trading Post; they're pretty cheap. It's just another chance to get the weapon skins in addition to the regular boss chests.

After a few more hours of play killing mobs across a variety of maps, hitting boss events, doing JPs and some open world chests, I still haven't seen one of these drop.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I believe what comrade raspberry jam meant to say is: it's all in the RNG.

Down with luck based capitalism!

Fractals was my go-to. 200% magic find. 100% from the luck essences, 100% from birthday booster. Got 1 key piece per run.

Sorry if this is a silly question but where's the chest and what drops from it?

Random Number Generation. Its just extra-nerdy RPG slang for "luck."

Got about 10 from Queensdale champion farming, maybe 4hrs in total, some from just random open world, and a few more from the dungeon itself. I was actually surprised how high the drop rate was.

There are five chests in the new Aetherpath of Twilight Arbor. Find all five for an achievement. They usually only contain a green, but if you're lucky you'll get a reskin of a Twilight Arbor weapon with blue visual effects instead of purple.

I now have 14.  None from dungeons outside Aether path (3 from there now), two from high-level zones and all the rest from low-level zones.  Drop-rate in low-level zones seems pretty good, as I get around three an hour from there, and 0-1 an hour from high-level zones.

Whenever I do any exploration path of Ascalonian Catacombs, I always get two Key Pieces from the Spider Queen's little ones.

Always 2. Not 1, 3 or 0, but 2.
