Necro Powermancer: Dagger, Axe, and I'd argue Warhorn. If not, then Staff.

ConD: Scepter, Dagger, Staff.

Elementalist
1. Staff (the currently best damage build for Ele uses this weapon)
2. Dagger (the currently second best damage build uses this, generally a good weapon for solo PvE)
3. Scepter (usually run with LH, weapon damage thus not important)

Engineer
1. Rifle (pretty much the only weapon of the Engineer you'll ever use for damage, thus its damage is important)
2. Don't craft anything else
3. Don't craft anything else

Ascended stat gain is really pitiful if you haven't examined it closely. Yes, 3 points or so of stats add up, but not nearly as much as the 5% upgrade in base damage that multiplies with everything. So if you have to prioritize, the most frequently used mainhand weapons on your direct damage builds will see a far greater benefit than anything else. (Actually used, any bundles like kits or lightning hammers will override, phantasms will ignore it, etc.)

I would suggest figuring out what builds you want to run and then decide on weapons accordingly rather than the other way around.

Ranger
1. Sword (where all your dps comes from.. so its always nice to have higher stats there)
2. Warhorn (Sword and warhorn are what most rangers have out in most situations, so naturally thats what would come next?)
3. Longbow (There are situations where you are going to need range, and if traited right the ASC LB hits hard. Find it more useful then Dagger/SB)

I see you didn't post anything, I take that to mean you don't know.

While sword has its uses in a fight where your up close gs does more. Shield has limited uses in a pve setting.  Focus is more of a situational tanking weapon.  Macs another tanking weapon. Which leaves hammer, the protection from auto is nice, but again in a pve setting seems to have limited use, 2 of its skills intact are useless on bosses.

Gs gives you damage, retaliation and control, while all the skills do dps. Staff is short range aoe and buffs the group. Scepter torch are your most efficient long range and again offer xontrol and aoe.

Edit: stupid spelling mistakes, typing with thumbs blows

Think I'd argue GS/Hammer as 1 for guard, but then I don't play as dps guard so kinda doesn't matter.

Thief
1: Dagger
2: Sword
3: Dagger

I prioritize dagger over sword because against trash mobs you won't really notice the benefit of sword damage, but in an extended single target fight you will. Same reason second dagger comes before pistol.

Ranger:
1: Sword
2: Warhorn
3: Longbow

Pretty obvious really... Could go Axe instead of LB if you offhand swap

Warrior:
1 Axe
2 Mace
3 Sword or Greatsword depending on if you gs swap or offhand swap.

Guardian:
1: Great sword
2: Hammer
3: Sceptre

Gs And hammer both have great DPs and are used a lot. Sceptre for ranged fight. Could go sword instead of sceptre if that's your swap.

Mesmer:
1:Sword
2: Great sword
3: Pistol/Sword

Focus will get used more then pistol/sword but I don't believe it will benefit as much from the damage increase.

Ele:
1: Dagger
2: Staff
3: Sceptre

Dunno really, that's just the order I would go because I always use a dagger.

Can't have an opinion on necro or engi since I don't really use. But since engis only have 4 weapons... I'd go rifle pistol shield.

Not entirely sure I understand this logic, but Dagger is an obvious priority for the Thief. However, against trash, S/ is infinitely better at clearing than D/. Can't avoid that.

I am surprised, however, that no one's mentioned Shortbow for Thief. I'd go: 1. Sword 2. Dagger 3. Shortbow.

The way I see it... You want to get your most used main-hand weapon first. Most of your DPS (barring some exceptions of course) will come from your auto-attack or second skill. Then you want to do your weapon swap main-hand weapon. Whatever you use on your off-hand should wait until last.

The other side of this is whether you want to use the agony-resist slots for fractals. That makes 2-handed weapons more desirable.

That said, unless as you say you're looking for a 2H weapon for fractals, a mainhand that also serves as an offhand will at least provide some benefit as the latter. As a Thief, for instance, an ascended dagger can give you a big bonus when going D/X and a small(er) one when going S/D or P/D. An ascended sword only provides a bonus when you're going S/X.
