That kind of gets to the gist of some of the problems in the game. The promotion of gear treadmills and the gem store promotes farming more than doing things for fun. I'm not saying you can't and that people don't, but it certainly appears to me that more people are interested in phat loot than intrinsically rewarding game play. And, who should blame them? How much work have we seen go into achievements, gem store, gear treadmill, etc compared to work on fun things like dungeons, pvp, wvw, etc.?
Sure, we have had a couple new dungeons, maybe, what, 4 paths or so? Nothing really that new and exciting. Nothing that gets to the heart of why dungeons are boring to begin with. Because, well, they are kind of static, and easy to figure out.
sPvP is a joke. I mean, can't we just kill it now and proclaim it dead? The meta is garbage. Fewer and fewer teams play seriously. There has been next to no development put in to it. It is has been pretty much DOA since release.
WvW could be awesome, but again, it has taken almost a year for the developers to really put even a modicum of time in to it and what do we get? Bloodlust and a new waiting area for queues. The game is still a zerg fest that is primarily dominated by servers with coverage in all time zones. It has seriously amazing potential, but nothing really giving it the love it needs.
So, yes, I think it is a merry and terrific idea to get people from farming to do fun things that I would enjoy doing... sadly, just taking away ways to farm isn't fixing that. And, so far, I don't see any initiative that it will be fixed. That is why the game is disappointing to me. You pretty much nailed it on the head.
