So I got 100 gold to spare and I want to contribute in WvW and help guildies. What class of mine should get Commander? What would be best to fully support others and why?

- Guardian
- Ele
- Mesmer
- Thief

A commander should stay alive as long as possible for the zerg fight. Ele, Mesmer and Thief are awesome in WvW but not to command. A thief is a roamer, the Ele provide AoE, Combo Field and Blas and the Mesmer provide Portal, veil, etc.

A Guardian in soldier gear can stay alive a really long time in a zerg. A Mesmer can stay alive even more if well traited, but in the middle of a zerg, not as much as a Guardian. Elementalist and Mesmer are still crucial to a good commander and if possible try to have a least one of each in your party and on the same VOIP as you so they can follow your command.

Thank you for the reply.
So Guardian would be the best choice for survivability. What if someone else in my party were a soldier geared guardian?

I suggest guardian.

I have comm on warrior (soldier armor/zerk trinkets, hammer interupt build) and most of the time in zerg vs zerg I charge enemy in first line (and I just love it). So imo commander must survive more.

Still surviving in zerg vs zerg isn't that connected with gear (soldier armor will still help) but it's mostly connected to block/invu/ etc skills. As warrior is combination of endure pain and balance stance and after that shield block, on guardian your elite skills, block, stability etc.

Thief nah, its roamer class, even in zerg its quite useless (only blasting really).
Ele and mesmer are also not that bad choice.
It all really depends on you commanding style. Do you prefer rather commanding and and staying in back or you just lead ppl to the fights from first line.
Still ele can be great first line fighter if builded in proper way.

I quite like to lead from the shadows. Do you guys think Mesmer would be a good choice for that matter?

I would go with Guardian. Every good commander I've seen has been one that has been able to charge right into the heat and live to tell about it afterwards. Frankly, I don't see that coming from a mesmer. What did you have in mind when you said "lead from the shadows"?

It does not really matter, we have commanders of every class and the difference between good, bad and mediocre commanders has absolutely nothing to do with their class.

In big zerg vs zerg combat, the commander need to concentrate on awareness and movement. He need to check the status of his zerg, the status of the enemy zerg and his head. He need to find weak point, opportunity, control his own zerg movement, etc. He don't have time to check his veil, portal, field, blast, stun, etc. At least not enough to be 100% effective with it. That why its best if the commander only call those thing and not actually does them. While he blast a field he can't watch the enemy with as much attention. Also ppl need to stick to the commander so when a Mesmer need to run alone behind the ennemy zerg to put a portal its better if he don't have a commander pin on his head.

That said, if you don't want to command those zerg vs zerg fight then you can choose whatever you want. Each profession will bring this strength.
