It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

That's pretty hawt. Their concept artists are really awesome. I would definitely frame some of their stuff and hang it up. That being said, I expect the actual in game armor to look nothing like this.

I've already seen some people wearing Ascended armor in-game and they look a pretty close match to the art.

The mark that missed the greatest was the Medium armor.  That helmet, missing rope sash and exaggerated shoulder piece.

I don't like the overall looks of Ascended armor, but I got to say, kudos on ArenaNet for keeping it real with the original design. It is VERY faithful when compared to the concept art.

Now if only I didn't sold all my silk for 10c each before that patch... I'd be sporting my full set already.

My full CLERICS set! Mhahahahahaha!

Touché! Good for them then.

I see a similarity to GW1 male warrior Obsidian when I look at those heavy leggings and boots, albeit with a somewhat different texture.

Spoiler

High heels and a flimsy mask on the female "heavy armor" made me shake my head from a practicality point of view. Yes, it's a videogame, and reality need not apply.

I personally don't find it all that appealing, but I can see how many would.  And it is very well rendered.  Kudo's to ANet for that.

Huh. He left a while ago, didn't he? I wonder when these were done?

Recognized it immediately though. Nice job implementing those designs into the game, though they aren't my favorite armor sets.

He's a free lance artist now I believe. Maybe he just did some contract work for ArenaNet?

I still find it funny that much of the texture work in GW1 on stuff like Obsidian armor is way better than what's used in GW2 specifically on ascended armor (which I personally think looks pretty close to awful)/

Ugh, Obsidian. More like Stoveman the robot master reject. The Ascended heavy helm looks good, reminds me of Lautrec.

These were done around 2011 if I remember correctly, though not specifically for ascended armor afaik. Usually it's after a theme, or a certain look the art director wants.

The modeling though was partly outsourced, and after such a long time (he hasn't done official concept work since leaving afaik) you can expect some of the disparities to show up, like the sash and the overall proportions aren't the same as the game cause the models were changed, these were concepted with GW1 model/human bodies in mind I think.

They are really not my cup of tea, I really do not like them. He's absolutely skilled but these just aren't appealing to me and neither are the ascended gear in the game. He makes a lot of amazing stuff thought.

Oh wow...! So that's what they were shooting for with the heavy armor. The finished product has very little of the same aesthetic appeal as the concept.

But shit, Kotaki left?? Dang. I really hope to see his work in other games.

He left maybe a year and a half ago-ish. He went to Bungie and did some stuff for Destiny for a while, though. I feel like he went somewhere else, but it might have just been some of his freelance work I saw.

In the end i changed appearance of my mesmer ascended armor to some low lvl+HoM simply because i really didnt want to go around dressed like court jester (my mesmer is Asura) :P !

That's a good point! Maybe it is a sign that Ascended was intended earlier than we thought? Who knows?

The difference between the concept is subtle, but the sum of their effects is clear. The colours in game lacks depth, the proportions are slightly off (noticeably on the male ascended heavy armor. It makes him look bloated), the material looks like plastic and the details are flat. That said, I don't mind the armors as much now that I've seen their concept.

I'm rather partial to the male the male medium armor concept. The in game version of it is a travesty.
