What advice would you give new players trying to learn the ropes?

I would tell new players that one of the core mechanics to master is dodging and one of the core skills or traits they should take is the movement trait; the faster you move in real-time combat the smarter ( and safer ) you'll be able to play.

-guild wars 2 wiki / gw2stuff / gw2ores / dulfy.net / gw2guru / gw2buildcraft / crafting apps/ ect.
are your friends. don't hesitate to look or ask something up you don't understand, or understand enough.
-that said, join a friendly helpful guild, since it will make the game easier and better.
if you happened to join a not-so-friendly one, keep searching until you find one. there's
a section here in guru for recruitment.
-if you completed all quests in a low lvl map, and you still haven't reached the level
for the next one, find similar lvled maps to go to.
-when fighting an unfamiliar monster the first time, read up if it has any traits written
below its name, it may give clues on how it attacks.
-you don't need to buy expensive equipment on the way to lvl 80.
in fact, avoid buying the most expensive stuff for below-80.
even blues will do. and you don't need to buy every lvl as well,
every 5-10 is enough. and if you joined a nice guild,
they'll be giving away hand me downs or low lvl stuff.
-if you're not in a rush, place orders instead of buying stuff outright in the trading post.
you don't get 'taxed' for placing orders, only when selling.
-as much as possible, try out the different classes as you can. sometimes descriptions
aren't a substitute for actually playing them. also note that their mechanics
can change considerably from low lvls to 80, as you unlock better traits.
and perhaps it might be wise holding off picking the avatar you'll make your
first legendary with until you tried them out.
-as you experiment with classes, don't be afraid to try out all the available
weapons they have as well.
-don't be afraid to switch weaponsets / utilities / heals / major traits mid-dungeon
until you find what works for you in different situations
-when you reach 80, read up first on the following before you start making equipment sets:
a. on the different types of equipment sets in the wiki and how can they be acquired
b. maximizing survivability / ehp / balance of vit & tough
c. breakpoints / balance of pow/prec/crit damage
d. best places to put crit damage with regards to stat trade-offs
* b,c,d are more for mixed sets
e. effective class builds in that point in time
-take note, there's going to be changes soon with crit with the arrival of the ferocity stat.
in case you get to 80 first before changes occur, perhaps its safer to stick
with dungeon token exotics in the meantime.
-for cash, you have dungeon runs, world boss trains, champ trains, and playing the
trading post. join first in guildie dungeon runs, so they can teach you, or if you're pugging,
avoid ones marked as 'speed runs, experienced' until you get the hang of it.
-when doing open world events, don't be afraid to join or create temporary parties,
more people, more tags, more loot.
-get at least 1 wp per map when you get to 80. that way you can easily join guild
missions / world boss hunts.
-more later if i forgot to add some things.

I like everything in your post but, this one strikes me as the most important to GW2 as well as any game really.
I think new players feel like they are so far behind when they join because they are starting a year after the game is released and try to rush everything.
IMO GW2 is one of the few games where you are never behind because everything you need is available.
Also I agree with trying to find a good guild or at least some people that you can run and learn the game with.
With the scale down for level 80 players it makes it nice for new players that we can come back to a lower level area and not just dominate everything. The level 80's IMO are still a little too powerful even with the scale down but, it is still nice that you can over aggro and die if you are not somewhat careful.
This is a very fun game to play and offers a lot for those who are willing to slow down and take it all in.
Don't worry about getting to max level in a day, it will come with regular game play and having fun.
