In many threads here I keep coming across a baseline conspiracy theory which is that Anet is bleeding people dry of their money and they are doing it successfully because ... Well that's where the logic leaves off.

This is simply an exploration of that logic. People play the game, they buy items, and the seem to invest beyond the basic cover price supporting the game through the CS. If the game is as poor as purported and Anet is just taxing players to death why are players willfully spending funds?

Now I can only think of two answers to this argument: 1. People are being forced. 2. People are stupid. The reason why I don't include "People are just being dragged along" is because no game has successfully dragged people that far, ever; when something goes against what you want to play you quit and move on to something you want to play because if you derive no pleasure from the game in any sense of the word and there is no completionist agenda to it then there's no value to maintaining that game in your queue. In essence if you are being "Dragged" or "Fooled" after a prolonged amount of time despite the overwhelming evidence that makes you stupid.

So to those who hold Anet in dissent for being "greedy" and capitalizing on players explain how this system really works and why the consumer is the victim and of what they are the victim of.

Anet is capitalizing on how the playerbase has operated since 2005. People pay if they think it's worth the money. The hardcore players want new things to get, the only difference here is you can use real money to get those things more quickly if you don't have the time.  The existence of cash shop items doesn't mean people are spending money on them either.  Those items take large chunks of gold out of the game through the trade tax.

Emotional decision perhaps, but never a decision due to stupidity.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow." -- Kay, Men in Black

Basic point being that just because a majority buy into something does not necessarily mean they're operating from a well-informed, intelligent place.  Their money is just as as good as yours, and when they've got the superior buying power, they'll be sold the worthless drek they're willing to pay in lieu of demanding better quality for their money.  Despite the above, operating from a place of emotion generally means they're willing to pay even more for the drek, which is actually quite stupid.  I don't pay more for a product unless there's a good argument for the tangible benefit I get in purchasing it.  Doesn't even need to relate to the product's quality.  Higher employee wages?  Environmentally safer manufacturing processes?

Nothing makes me warmer and fuzzier in this game than watching even the most ardent fans realize when their support is being twisted to bilk them for money.

Edit: Also not sure about the point of this post, except to bait elitist responses.

It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

I think McDonald's fast food chain is your answer.  Or diet soft drinks.  Or purchased warranties on most products.  Or the lottery.  Or tobacco.  Or Scientology.

In spite of the hyperbole, the game is not the worst game ever.  I don't think even its most ardent detractors really believes that.  Otherwise, they wouldn't be wasting time on pointing out the stinkier bits of it.  Nobody here wastes their time arguing that Perfect World could be a better game, because that would be ridiculous.

The truth is that GW2 showed promise.  Some people at ArenaNet have exhibited some understanding of what would make a better game.  Some of it was there in GW1, some in the pre-launch blogs, the occasional moment in the development since launch.

When GW2 gets to the point where it's beyond all hope, I don't expect there will be many intelligent critics left, because they will have finally given up and moved on.  There's still (perhaps tiny) room to hope, and that's what keeps people discussing it.

What real point does this thread serve beyond labeling certain players and their habitual actions as stupid?

Discussion of player dedication or descent doesn't need its own topic, especially when the thread's title is bascially a trigger statement.  /locked
