(The title rhymes!) PCGamePlay was at it again! Their previous issue had  a lot of GamesCom coverage but to my surprise no Guild Wars 2. The  latest issue just rolled in with a Guild Wars 2 review and an interview  with lead designer Eric Flannum. So like last time  I will translate the bunch for everyone to enjoy, not just the  Dutchies. Again, apologies for any spelling/grammar errors. Wall ‘O  Text… beam me down!

http://www.guildmag....y-gw2-interview

There's hardly any new info so don't get yer hopes up ;)

Thanks for posting.

Maybe I'm mis-interpreting/looking too much into it, but this quote is interesting:

Quote

Our dynamic events system is a fantastic system which we support 100%, but our alphatesters appeared to have some problems with it.

Does that mean that the game is near completion or do they use the term "Alpha Testing" as any form of outside group coming in to play the game? We've known for a while that they have had a test crew come in to try out dynamic events, but when the term alpha test comes into play it makes it seem more concrete.

What do you guys think?

70 artists?  Wow...

As far as flying mounts go, we may not be going up into the sky, but sounds like we'll be going down into the water very often.  I've thought before in games with flying mounts that they seem to be using the same mechanics as underwater swimming, as if you're swimming through the air.

Speaking of finding places to go, is there going to be something to lead players from one area to the next as they get more powerful?  I'm sure the Personal Story would have a factor here, but I don't know if I would trust that everyone's just going to find the next area to go to by exploring without something pulling or pushing them there.  They're might be likely to just stay in the area they're in.

I think underwater locations off more variety than the sky does. In the sky you can fly. That's it. Underwater you can have lairs, cities of underwater creatures, crazy landscapes only possible under the sea. While it's cool to fly around in a game, there are plenty of games that do that already and there aren't many MMO's that have tackled underwater with any real jaw dropping effect yet. Here's to hopin ANET bucks that trend.

Haha so true. Back when I played WoW sometimes I'd lag when getting on my flying mount and my character would be doing the swimming animation through the air at very high speeds! Almost made WoW worth the subscription...

Why the hell did they ask about flying mounts, but not about regular mounts? Also, SweetZoid, this means nothing. I HOPE MOUNTS ARE DEAD.

Just about to post this myself. We only speculate from this information that a) Arena-net go about testing as things are complete e.g. dynamic events complete therefore needs testing, b) That the whole game is finished (up to alpha testing standard) or c) They've only finish the demo section which needed alpha testing....

That's my take on it.

If anything this is a negative about mounts.  Only flying mounts were discussed and they said it's not happening.

They mentioned even some months before PAX that they had outsiders coming in to the studio to test, and they were watching over their shoulder (this was in some interview), and they initially had problems getting used to dynamic events.  I think those people were friends and family of ArenaNet employees, which makes sense if they had to physically be at the studio.

As much as that is depressing to accept, I feel A is correct (or maybe even C :().

Tbh they've probably had alpha testers for a while. Of course you hear nothing because these people are probably mostly employees, and they are all probably under strict NDA's.

Swimming is just like flying below sea level.  The experience could be equivalent.

No, it means that the interviewer asked a question about flying mounts. Eric could have easily made a comment about land based mounts with that question too, but he didn't. Does that mean that they're in the game? No. It just means that he said that there won't be any flying mounts in the game.

I'm confused, all I saw was 3 questions about instance vs. persist stuff we already knew, and 1 about something that isn't even in the game.  Was there more to this and I just can't see it?

I guess he is talking about when you outlevel an area. You can always return of course, but for the time being your interest will be discovering new places.

The quote is a direct response to this question:

Gameplay said:

The scouting system surprised us but confused us at the same time. Isn’t it just a traditional MMO quest in a different jacket?

Basically, they added "traditional" methods (stars over heads, scouting system) to draw people towards dynamic events, which players were avoiding because "I didn't have that quest."

Eric later adds:

Eric Flannum said:

But some players need a push in the right direction so we also provide a map with the locations of things amiss. Players can go there and participate in the events. Once they did that event they can cross it off on the map. But I should note that we only pinpoint the event and give a tiny description of what’s happening there.

The heck with flying, I wonder if there are areas we can climb? :)

I thought this quote in particular was cool.

Quote

We have event chains where there are more than 15 tasks in which entire cities can be conquered.
*Big round eyes* Ooooooo!

Also nice of ArenaNet to state the bloody OBVIOUS answer whenever that 'can you make permanent world changes' question come up

Quote

Our events aren’t one time, that would be a waste of effort.
It's about time the MMO players who constantly ask that question start to deal with the reality of making games.

I think they should stop mentioning green markers above npc's heads because really whats the fidd between a marker and a star?

Scouting system I think works cause it just saves time.
