And so I went ahead and did the following things:
- turned off all map icons
- in fact I unmapped the Map key
- turn minimap rotation on

and the world just became a brand new experience.

I think I'm gonna keep these settings.

If players are trying things like that just to have fun from the game, then it shows how terrible the game is. Cool idea though, and I imagine that it's quite an experience to see the world 'face-on', but it could only happen in GW2.

Opener didn't say that he didn't have fun earlier.
He just created a much more immersive world without all that icons, etc. I would, contrary, say: what a fantastic game it is!
Also that's good idea for RolePlayers.

You can turn of map icons? Like POI's and such? When did they implement this option (that should have been standard from the beginning with no option to turn it on)?

Well I think people can do it just to increase immersion. For example lots of people use mods that remove map icons and limit fast travel in skyrim. I don't have those but I do use a mod that hides hud when out of combat and only shows stamina, health and magicka during fights.

Certainly helps with those who want to be immersive but can't resist the appealing of simply WP away.

So... you believe that Skyrim, and other mod-able games, are terrible, just because players are constantly trying new things and mods to make their experience more enjoyable? I would disagree.
The fact that the game allows for such "simple" tweaks such as this means it could have been worse... like having no way to alter your map at all.

Heck if I could turn gathering nodes off, I would too.

The world just seems much larger all of a sudden.
I actually just got lost in Gendarran... And it felt wonderful lol.

Is there anyway I can turn the mini map off?

There should be an achievement for world completion with icons off the entire time Heh.

I need to do this, thanks for bring it to others' attention Trei. As an explorer this is a welcome change of pace. I haven't really fully explored the entire map yet and I like that it encourages truly remembering what you have seen and where it is in relation to the rest of the world. It encourages making a connection with the world around you.

Post it note over the top of your screen? Quite often I find myself grumbling about not being able to completely change my UI like I could in GW. I personally prefer to have my skill bar at the top of the screen as opposed to the bottom and the health orb still annoys me.

Little Mabel won't be able to be here it's our worst fear. She's busy working on her garden that she's growing up in space.

Why hello there forumite. Would you like me to review some moderation you did not agree with? Never fear! PM is here! Want to be a better poster? Check on this link! And this one!

For the world map, it's been there at least since release. I want to think I played around with turning things off in beta... but that's been awhile ago.

Perhaps related... I've often wondered what it would be like to turn the whole UI off and try to learn to play strictly by "feel".

Easy enough, Left CTRL + Left Shift, then H. This also allows you to take pics without the UI. Pics can also be taken in BMP instead of the default JPEG by adding BMP to the target in the exe as such: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -bmp

I was going to suggest playing without the UI on if you really wanted a different experience.  It definitely increases the difficulty and tests how well you know your build.

To remove the UI entirely would be a little too extreme for me, but I will try to scale the UI down as small as it can get and see if it makes any difference.

I sometimes turn off vistas, hearts, and other similar UI elements when I'm exploring. It lets me guide myself more naturally instead of beelining it from heart to heart just to fill up on XP.

I don't think I could ever play without the whole UI though. The map should definitely be able to be turned off separately though.

The guy is a member since Nov 2011. It's safe to assume he played from the start. That's like 2 years or so.

I'd be surprised if he didn't have any problem finding fun things do after playing a casual, non-competetive MMORPG for ~2 years. Though actually this game has a ton of fun things to do.

But I think you're missing the point. He's talking about boosting immersion, and not increasing fun factor.

Increasing the immersion can also increase the fun factor. Which is the case here. All the options he turned off should have been standard for the game from begin with but sadly they aren't.

It's not the case of "This game sucks so much I had to turn off the minimap" but rather "Hey guys, here's a fun way to play this".

For me it is the former (only referencing this single aspect here).
