The Mayan people were very smart people. They invented the calendar, they knew a crap load of stuff about the stars and they built amazing buildings with simple tools.

Do you think this 2012 talk is not just talk and actually something we should be watching?

I'm not saying something bad will happen, but you never know... What do you all think?

You apparently haven't studied this more, have you? If I'm not mistaken, it was later discovered that the mayan calendar "begins" a few years before our modern AD calendar, therefore the "end of the world" was actually 2008, not 2012.

Read an article that stated the accuracy of the mayan calendar is based on old written accounts and might not be as accurate as we thought.

Basicly this article is stating that the translation of their timeline to our timeline is  innacurate. The actual end of the world could be as far off as 2100 and later if ever in our life tim

The 2012 hype does generate some amazingly funny comedy, though. Most of the comedy is unintended by the creators.

I don't know whether a huge event will happen in 2012 or not, but you have to realize anything can happen.

You also have to take into account that if the government wanted to keep something secret from the public to prevent mass hysteria they would do so. Hell, for all we know there could be some huge ass rock barreling towards the Earth threatening our very existence. One can only imagine all the secrets that are being kept away from us.

Remember that movie? I can't remember the name, but I do remember a line.

there will be massive riots cause by people that believe 2012 is the end that will eventually lead to the collapse of govt then nukes will be triggered and we will cause the end of the world not some giant meteor.(thats my theory if 2012 really happens) of course i think 2012 is bs

2012 is when the borders of north America will erase and we become one country, u.s., Canada , and Mexico, kinda like Europe,hence the end of the world as we know it,  look it up I can't post a link right now because I am on a Droid but I'm sure you can find something    * just Google the north American union...before you call me crazy just think...the european union happened didn't it?

Yeah,... The Mayans never actually said 'OMG, WE'RE GOING TO DIE', if I'm not mistaken, people just interpreted the fact that their calendar ends in 2012 as 'OMG, IT'S A PREDICTION'. Which is crap, because the Mayans probably just didn't bother, because they'd probably be dead or could make up something else along the way. Proved them right, we did, now not a single one of them's left :p.

All civilizations crumble at some point. Always have, always will. Mayans, Romans, Egyptians, Greeks... Modern society will fall, too, at one point, in favor for something new. It is inevitable, if you look at history.

EDIT:
I don't believe this will happen in 2012, though, lol. But if it does, I'm not sure how bad it would be. I'm not really a big fan of how we do things this day and age, a change would be welcome. It would suck though if we're all going to die during that change. That would not be a fun change. Unless we're going somewhere nice. And I'm not sure if we are. So, yeah... Not dying to find out, if you pardon the pun.

The spaniards have nothing to do with the downfall of the maya civilization, the mayas were gone long before the conquistadores arrived. The reason why they are gone is still unknown though it was likely due to overpopulation and exhaustion of the agricultural potential or a toltec invasion.

The Mayans used many calendars. Years, lunar months, etc... the all have one thing in common... they're cyclical.

This means they start over at the end of each period. All of them. Whatever this big one was supposed to represent, if they were still around they'd likely be all excited about that one getting close to rolling over as well... provided we accurately translated the apparent start of it in the first place, which is projected to be off by as much as 50 to 100 years.

As for the end of our species? Who can say... depends on how badly we screw up this planet, or whether or not we get off it and spread to other planets or even stars.

End of the earth? Still a few billion years from that.
