In Topic: How Do I Counter Mesmer Greatsword?

Sneeze in the general direction of the Phantasm that just stands there for 1-2 seconds before attacking. QED.

There is a delay but its not that bad.  Been playing mesmer for awhile now and its been one nerf after the next.  Some stealth nerfs as well that dont make much sense.  I still enjoy the class so I adapt.

The delay is enough for melee phantasms like the iBerzerker and iWarden to die immediately before they can do anything. The iWarden is particularly a problem because it used to have wonderful utility as an opener against ranged-only monsters. Now it'll just die immediately upon summoning.

To be honest, the new phantasm delay would cause me to suggest that you stay FAR FAR away from the Mesmer until they fix this issue. Having 1 skill on your 5-slot weapon bar rendered 75% useless in high-level situations is pretty frustrating, not to mention all the utility skills that are also borked by this.

My suggestion? Play something else until they fix this fiasco that the class has become.

just wanted to post an apology to timanth:

i've since experimented with the phantasmal disenchanter, and i had no idea that it removed the buffs on self-replenishing bosses (like the coe turret guy & svanir statue guy) for an extended period of time.  i had foolishly assumed it would only momentarily remove the buffs before the turrets/statues re-applied them a second later, but after trying it and testing it i can safely say it works amazingly for those kinds of bosses-- it saves you the trouble of even having to deal with the boon-giving sources.

from only a little testing it seems that the boons stayed stripped for at least 5-10 seconds after the most recent "strip attack" (sounds sexier than it is), which makes it completely viable even in a shatter build, especially when timing your shatters in the manner you described earlier.

unfortunately i didn't use it in the run i posted, but from now on i will definiately swap a utility for it on any kind of boss that has that "self-replenishing boon" effect.

i also haven't tested it on the fire-shields from the support golems, but i assume it works well there also (and will probably use it there too after some testing.)

sorry for assuming something without properly testing it first.  felt like i should at least concede to the phantasmal disenchanter since it is supremely superior in certain situations to anything else.

i'm surprised many mesmers don't already use it as a staple for those turret/statue fights, and i think the added dynamic of never really seeing anyone use it is what added to my initial prejudice.

so, sorry, i admit i was wrong about that

Yeah, the replenishment on the boons happens per totem pulse/turret firing, which occurs every 3-5 seconds, don't have the timing exact. And the firing interval on the Disenchanter's cast is 4.5s enough to keep those boons nicely stripped :).

I don't think it works on the fire shields, although that would be amazing. I don't think the Fire Shield counts as a boon, so there you have it.

Yeah, the Disenchanter is a fairly niche phantasm. I usually only bring it for the self-replenishing boon fights, or as a second condition remover when I feel like the party needs it.

But what I've discovered about the Mesmer is that it's been given a set of tools that can only be used in extremely specific situations but are VERY GOOD during those situations, and it's up to the player to figure out how to use them :).

That's why I swap out utilities so much during a dungeon, because the Mesmer literally has a utility to answer for EVERY situation.

Probably because the group wanted to "melee it up close" which IMO isn't a bad idea if your capable of personally surviving (mesmer has plenty of ways to do this--) for a long enough time to *barely* die and then help res someone when they go down.

However, a lot of noob groups think they can simply mindlessly sit up there and slash at him til he dies, without realizing that down penalties stack and you need to avoid things whenever possible because sometimes he catches you off guard with 2 of the same attack in a row, or the undead tendrils slap you from an especially longass distance.

Personally I run GS/Sword with 10/30/0/0/30, and Illusion Of Life, Blink, and Decoy.  I think it's a pretty optimal setup vs him damage-wise & survival wise--

Illusion of Life has made some CLUTCH plays when 2-3 people down and about to wipe from his AOE circles/earth spikes-- not to mention people can easily stay alive from killing a tendril or thrall nearby.

Blink gets you out of the prison crystal, something that activates quickly and is difficult to dodge (even after running the dungeon so many times, i admit to having trouble dodging his quick movements for it-- only like 1/3 successful).

Decoy helps when you aren't the sole survivor and he has a boner for you with his earth spikes/ prison crystals, and your low on dodges.  It especially helps to use it because of its automatically created clone, since it usually targets them over your teammates (since its usually the nearest thing to you when he loses "hate" on you from the stealth).

I think i'll make a video to demonstrate my arguable playstyle / setup.  It can also help determine whether you guys think i'm skilled enough as a mesmer to make any real judgements about anything-- since i believe you should be a skilled player to be taken seriously with any theorycrafting or ideas in general.

i'll run CoE sometime tonight and post a video soon after :)

The "Melee Alpha and Spam Support Skills" really only works if you're running the Submarine path. There are other optimal strategies for paths 2 and 3.
