What does memory bandwidth affect in terms of GPUs and gaming?

05 August 2012 - 08:18 PM

I've been keeping my eyes on the upcoming 660Ti as I currently don't own a discrete video card. But comments from various sites have shown that the specifications will be exactly the same as a gtx 670 except the 660Ti will use a 192-bit bus than a 256-bit one. I've also seen a lot of comments where people are saying this will "cripple the card's performance by a lot" but then I've seen others say it shouldn't matter if you're using just one monitor to play your games as the memory bandwidth only comes into play at high resolutions (2560x1600 or whatever and up) or when using multiple monitors.

So I'm just wondering if using a 23-inch monitor at 1920x1080 resolution, will the lower memory bandwidth have much effect, if any, at all? I know a lot of gamers on those PC sites tend to have, in my opinion, "high standards" but I'd just like to know the drop in performance objectively (as in any FPS drops/rendering/etc) as I don't really know much at all when it comes to actual performance.

Also yes I know it's not out yet but I'm sure it's possible for someone to know if all other factors are kept the same, excluding the memory bandwidth, what that entails. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What if Transmutation Stones were only available in Cash Shop

16 April 2012 - 12:15 AM

Alright so this is a "What if" thread and I'd just like to know people's opinions on how they would feel about this topic, so just remember:

  • Please keep links or pictures of any beta/alpha forums for GW2 out of this thread
  • The goal of this thread is just get people's views on a possible scenario
  • Don't bash others' views

Scenario: Transmutation items are taken out from the game and become Cash Shop only.

Discussion: What are your opinions about that?

Possibility that capes are in the game!

28 March 2012 - 11:02 PM

Hey everyone so I just started watching the new Totalbiscuit video about skills and traits for the Thief and I noticed in the Hero panel by where the accessories are there's a slot that says "Back" when he hovers over it. It also has a picture of what looks like a cape/hood/cloak thing.

Here's the video, he hovers over it at the 2:14-2:19 mark

No one seems to have brought this up. Last post and thread about them was in Q&A in late January and it confirms that they weren't available anymore. I'm glad Anet brought it back for good, hopefully. Do you guys think it'll just be for guilds only like GW1 or that we may be able to see it become a regular equipment item like helms/gloves/etc?

EDIT: Turns out not only is it a cape slot but Engineer Backpack's from their biography take up the Back slot. This means there's possibility of other items such as scarves/quivers that can go on there as well. (Credits to Cloudpiercer)

Hall of Memories: What Profession/Skill is this?

02 March 2012 - 03:47 AM

Hey guys at about 0:40 secs into the video you can see a person holding a blue-ish sword and there's also floating/spinning blue swords around the person too. Does anyone know what profession and skill this is? They also have the same armor as the elementalist and mesmers shown in the video so I'm assuming it's a light-armored profession and therefore not the Guardian's Sword of Justice skill. Or maybe it is? I'm not sure, but if anyone can clarify I'd be very grateful. :)

Can any race "explore" other race's enemy factions?

03 January 2012 - 02:21 AM

For instance I know that each race has their own "enemy faction" (Sons of Svanir, Nightmare Court, etc). I know that as a respective race to these factions the player will most likely have a storyline that incorporates them. I also know you cannot join these factions. But what I'm wondering is if say I make a Human, would I be able to explore the Sons of Svanir as much as a Norn, or will the Norn be able to progress much further because they're a Norn character? (Norn joke not intended lol) If there's a thread that has already answered this question then I'm sorry and I'd definitely appreciate a link. :)
