#2203380 ArenaNet ceases Guild Wars 1 live development, automates game

Posted BuddhaKeks on 18 May 2013 - 01:05 PM

While it's good to see that the servers aren't shut down, it's devasting to see the end of an era. Especially since there were still untold stories from Guild Wars Beyond. Now we will never see what happens in Elona, how Ebonhawke is founded, who that Mysterious Lich is and what happened to Evennia. I hope they atleast give us some fractals about these events to make up for it, or something like the Bonus Mission Pack.

Man, I want it released to the public so bad. Community content has a fantastic way of keeping games alive for years.

Ditto. A sad day to be sure, but an inevitable one.

As long as the servers don't shut down I don't care. The "end" of GW1 came about when GW2 launched and ANet shifted focus. GW1 only got small balances and fixes for the last 8 months, nothing is really changing. If ANet shuts down GW1, then I might actually cry.

Requiescat in Pace, Guild Wars. You gave me many hours of entertainment, challenge, and pride.

Thanks, ANet. Now please repeat your earlier years of success ;)

For what its worth, it did get my money worth in all the campains from gw1, thank you Anet, so many great memories and great friends that i made and my guild and guildies also,

#2202992 Consortium is Nexon/NCSoft?

Posted ben911993 on 17 May 2013 - 01:29 PM

This idea came up several months ago with the release of Lost Shores. I can't remember all of the points made, but it was pretty convincing. Among the "evidence" behind the theory was the jumping puzzle named "Under New Management," a suspected reference to Nexon and Cristin Cox working their grubby claws into the game with purely profitable measures. As well, there was the suspicion of a symbolism between karka and the lionguard. It was theorized that the karka represented Nexon, coming into the Lionguard's (ANet's) territory, and tearing down the lion statue in LA, symbolic of Nexon stripping ANet of their former relatively non-greedy stance with a cash shop in GW1.

I'm normally not big on conspiracy theories, but I don't think it's any coincidence that in the interim between GW1 and GW2, Nexon purchased some 15% of the shares of NC Soft (or was it ANet themselves?), and ANet hired Cristin Cox to oversee the monetization of GW2, and now GW2 is a significantly more cash driven game than GW1. Cristin is already well known for having ruined Maplestory, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it were actually at NC Soft's "suggestion" that ANet hired her. Why would a company that had such a successful model with GW1, with a very limited cash shop, suddenly go overboard with it in GW2?

I have to agree with Duderino: it seems NC Soft forced GW2 out early in an attempt to rescue a sinking ship. And now they're taking the lifeboats with them. GW2 is only just in the past 2-3 months starting to head in the right direction with content and updates, but it's still far too gold/cash-centric than I care for.

I was in a thread in the videogame generals section of 4chan yesterday (no, /b/ does not comprise all of 4chan; there's more to it than that), and someone jokingly posted something along the lines of:
"Just $15 a month and you can be a premium GW2 member, receiving benefits such as:
--800 gems per month!
--early access to new content!
--free costumes/cosmetics from the Black Lion store!
--a monthly package of boosters and other consumables!"
And a few other benefits.

It's scary just how believable that post was. GW2 is being ruined by its cash driven stance. I much preferred the system of GW1 where I could just pay $7 and get the costume I want, no rng, no gambling, just me playing dress-up with my characters.

#2202329 On Lottery (RNG) Boxes

Posted Jairyn on 15 May 2013 - 08:05 PM

I would love to see more players united against the lockboxes. They are predatory and manipulative in the very same way that combining a gear treadmill and a subscription fee is... Yet ArenaNet cheerfully waxed poetic on how unscrupulous the P2P market is. GW1 had an "honest" cash shop based on flat fees and a fair amount of my anticipation for GW2 was partly based on the assurance that the cash shop would mirror its predecessor. GW1 did just fine with an honest cash-for-(digital) goods system, why are we now tolerating anything different?

I have yet to buy a key or lockbox, though I've otherwise purchased gems and gem store items. I want Arena Net to do well, I want to support them, I want them to have the funds to pay happy, healthy workers and flood the game with polish and content. I don't want them to employ shady marketing practices.

Ship Crystin Cox back to NCSoft (edit: Nexon? whatever - MapleStory) where she belongs.

#2196395 Is the April 30th Update "make or break"?

So really my question is this: If the April 30th update is not the type of changes and additions we hope for, do we just have to accept that GW2 is what it is and it may not be significantly changed?

Yes and No.

yes because GW2 is a different game than GW1 and may never be like its predecesor ever again.  so you must accept it in that aspect.

and

No because considering the amount of content we've received in just this first 8 months for free?  its naive to think ANet cant add more and more and more features.  i mean guild halls and player housing is coming, these things take time.

but is april 30th make or break?  maybe for you, but hardly for the rest of us.

#2186354 Super Adventure Box Always-Online

Am I seriously reading this?  It's an MMO, it needs to be online due to the volume of information going through it.

What are you talking about?

Super adventure box is the new game created by Arenanet with cutting edge graphics which is being developed for their exculsive console which is totally gonna beat Sega and Nintendo.

What's an MMO anyways?

GW2 is an opportunity for adventurers to once again journey in the wonder that is Tyria while experiencing stunning artwork, visceral combat, teamwork oriented gameplay, and a continuously evolving story.

#2164263 What would you change/add to Zhaitan's battle?

Posted Red Intensity on 15 February 2013 - 02:13 AM

I (and many others) thought this particular boss battle was lacking something, like for example: a battle. Hop on ship, kill some trash and wait for mahlazor to fire, then pelt dragon with fireballs until dead. I've seen some crappy final battles, but this tops my personal chart in "worst boss battles". What would I add if money/time/permission/code weren't issues? A battle with phases:

1. Standard trash fight on ship.

2. Laser hits dragon and we pelt it with fireballs.

3. Zhaitan hops from tower to ship's deck; Destiny's Children Edge come up on deck with barrels filled with laser rifles/rocket launchers/flamethrowers. Pact forces join in with said weaponry and we're killing trash + fighting Zhaitan. After enough health has dropped, Zhaitan's weight causes the ship to split in two and fall from the sky.

4. After the crash, Zojja informs the PC that her buddies are unconscious but so is Zhaitan for the moment. She has her golem search through the wreckage to find something useful (this part's the intermission to the quest) and during the intermission, her golem finds 5 battlesuits (if one remembers this quest) and Zojja orders the golem to charge them and once fully charged, the PC's enter them, which ends the intermission.

5. Zhaitan wakes up as the PC's burst out of the wreckage, lasers blazing. Halfway through the fight, Zojja tells the PC that her crew have woken up, but Eir and Caithe are too badly injured to help themselves. Once Zhaitan's health drops to 20%, Zojja informs the PC that she's found and activated an emergency evac beacon within the wreckage. Zhaitan throws up a temporary barrier that makes it invincible and now sends waves of trash mobs with a champion or two in the mix, and the PC's are defending the ship from the trash. Once the evac chopper arrives, PC's escort Destiny's Edge to the chopper while holding back the trash mobs.

6. The chopper leaves, and the beacon is destroyed. Zhaitan lowers barrier and fight continues. Halfway through the fight (again), the battlesuits run out of juice, forcing the PC's to get out. Zojja informs PC via radio that the battlesuits have auxiliary power supplies that have just enough juice to act as beacons for artillery, and recommends the PC's to lure Zhaitan to each of the beacons. The artillery attacks make Zhaitan sluggish until enough of them knock it out. An evac chopper piloted by Trahearne (how he learned to fly, we'll never know) arrives and we hop on, and as we're leaving, orders any megalaser-equipped airships to blast it to hell. As the chopper flies away, lasers begin firing and nuking Zhaitan. (the blasts are so blinding we end in a fade to white).

Looking at my idea, no wonder all we see are points 1 and 2. Anyway, what would you guys change/add to the battle if you could?
