Please Help Me Build From Scratch

21 November 2012 - 08:05 PM

Hello! My modded Dell Inspiron 545 just isn't handling the "one time"  events, WvW or even going through Asura gates sometimes. Even though Guild Wars 2 is the only game I play, and the most taxing on my system I am ready to try to make something more powerful. I'm here because I am absolutely new to this and thought it was a good place to start.

My friend gave me his old  Antex Skeleton to start.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next few months.

Budget Range: $600 - $1000+ (only if necessary)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Guild Wars 2 (on maximum settings), 3D modelling, Photoshop, Movies

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:http://www.newegg.ca/ , http://www.ncix.com/ , http://www.tigerdirect.ca

Country: Canada

Overclocking:  No

SLI or Crossfire: No / (maybe for future upgrades? Not sure if it will fit.)

Monitor Resolution: I would like to get a new monitor too. Current resolution is 1440 x 900 but the screen feels small.

Additional Comments: I would like a quiet PC but no water cooling.

Please keep in mind the most hardware related things I've done in the past is upgrade my video card and power supply. I am a total noob at this building stuff! Be gentle!

My First Solo Upgrade

16 July 2012 - 09:01 PM

I didn't know where to share this but I really wanted to tell someone who would understand my excitement. I just upgraded my computer all by myself!

Posted Image

It's a Dell Inspiron 545, and I switched out it's default 300W power supply for a Rosewell 600W one and replaced the video card with a Radeon 5670.

The video card was free from my brother's old computer, I just bought the new power supply. The cable management is sort of non existent. It came with some cable ties but there isn't really anything to bundle or tie the cables to. Any suggestions, or is that mess ok? I know I should have bought a modular unit but I didn't have the money.

At any rate when this computer becomes fairly useless for my needs I will be confident enough to build a new one from scratch. But until then, this thing is awesome to me and I am so proud that it didn't blow up after I put in the new hardware.

BTW: upgrades are solely for Guild Wars 2.  XD

Nothing motivates learning faster than seeing a Sylvari creation video and wanting desperately for your computer to be able to render those shiny surfaces and textures.
