#2352427 Heart of Thorns Hands-On Preview

Nice write-up.

How intuitive is Stronghold?  I know both WvW and PvP can be a bit overwhelming to newcomers because it seems like there is so much to learn while in a hostile, fast-paced environment.

Thanks! Stronghold is a bit more forgiving from what I experienced, since straight-up PvP is still a viable means of gameplay. All the secondary mechanics can be taken in slowly while you learn how everything works. Supply is probably the most important aspect of the game mode though (aside from killing of course).

Basically, within the demo, was there any hint at whether we'll still be suffering the occasional courtyard match after HoT launch when all we really want to do is the new mode?

I actually asked about this while I was there, and they said they're going to be looking at how everything works in the beta before they consider adding it to a standalone queue.

I won't be able to log in to play for another week. I'm very curious, though, how surprising did you find it? Did they take the story in a satisfying but nonetheless unexpected direction or was it pretty easy to guess what was going to happen?

Unexpected?  Depends on how well you followed all the clues.  The way they did it is quite unexpected.

Implementation?  Absolutely stunning, and enjoyable.  Be sure to solo the story missions first, lets you appreciate them.

#2313300 Introducing the Megaserver System

Posted shanaeri rynale on 02 April 2014 - 01:48 PM

In one fell swoop Anet have got rid of one of my largest issues with the game…

It will also negate the need for server merges due to low population and help the overflow issues in a single stroke. It’s pretty much how things should have been designed from the start but better late than neverPosted Image

So happy at this. I hated the server system intensely and felt it was a step backwards in tech terms from GW1. There’s still the EU/US divide to breach but this is a quantum leap from where we were.

Any help you guys could offer me is great my budget for a graphics card is £60-90

Where do you intend to buy? If you're planning to find something online, could you link us to the retailer? That would make it easier to find the best deal for that budget.

This guide is super useful, but keep in mind that their recommendations are based on the best performance available for each US price segment. Its probably still a good starting point, but its possible that some recommendations would be different in the UK market.

#2294589 Where would you place "new" LA?

Posted Robsy128 on 12 February 2014 - 05:24 PM

Go to the Vigil - rebuild Orr. It'd be great lore-wise as all of the races would be like 'this is where we banded together when we had almost lost all hope against Zhaitan. Let's make a city in remembrance.' Or something to that effect anyway. Plus I want to see a really big, working Orr rather than a desolated land. Zhaitan's been dead for almost 2 years now.

#2290704 Update Notes for February 4th

Posted Neo Nugget on 04 February 2014 - 08:45 PM

The only thing I don't like about the patch so far is that the new Flamekissed armor is another reskin, and its  hood still clips with my asura's ears.

Other than that, I'm so happy with it. There are tons of little additions to WvW that are going to make the format much more enjoyable down the road. Consider me pleased.

#2281937 [Answered] Buying used GW 2 on Ebay

Posted typographie on 18 January 2014 - 12:21 AM

The disc is worthless. Anyone who bought the digital copy of the game doesn't even own one. This guy on Ebay is scamming, whether he realizes it or not. You can't play without an account, and you can't make an account without a serial number. The serial number is what you're really paying for when you buy GW2.

If its any consolation, $32 is not very much to pay for a game like this.

#2279159 The Elder Scrolls: Online

Posted Guest 34905 on 11 January 2014 - 10:38 AM

My opinion on teso:

  • The general feel of the zone is very good, pretty much the best I've ever played except GW1/GW2
  • They stayed true to the tes style, no cartoony graphics, but quite realistic
  • The music/sound department did a very good job, i started as a nord and you really got the cold, winter vibe from playing there
  • The classes seem to be very different during the first hours of play
  • The world feels empty, it's basically a standard quest game
  • Alot of the quests are stretched out to give you a sense of difficulty (instead of just going to a dungeon and kill something in it, you need to find it, summon a spirit, collect stones, place those stones,...)
  • The graphics are kinda meh..
  • Especially the viewing distance is very short for a 2014 MMO (just go stand on a tower...)
  • There are still LOTS of bugs for a game that is supposed to come out in 3 months.
  • The combat system is basically just spam away and use abilities to speed it up. Agreed I played just the first couple of levels, but still when I started GW2 the learning curve was a bit higher.
  • I don't get the whole instance/server thing, sometimes I'm playing all alone, suddenly there are players in the most unlogical places (a dungeon that NOBODY entered in 100s of years, 20 ppl standing inside...)
  • The combat feels like a bad copy of GW2, attacks often don't hit while your weapon clearly hits them, it just doesn't feel very accurate.
All in all definitely not worth the sub-fee, but if it goes F2P (which I see happen before a year has passed) I'll really play it because I want to see Tamriel!

#2273867 Kicking Thieves in PvE

True, I should have probably been less broad. As titles I meant something like Dungeon Master, Sunbringer and whatnot. I was obviously not stating titles non related to PvE, as that would contradict my entire post. And you literally didn't have to quote the whole post, as you were only caught up with one sentence in whole paragraph full of suggestions. Really, out of all things you could have said about communicating, discrimination, equality, elitism... Why?

And you are right, its not perfect at all. According to the AP logic, we need to do some jumping puzzles and adventure box to increase our proficency in lets say Arah. Does that sound "fairly reliable" to any sane mind? Its like comparing the quality of a car with the taste of eel sushi.

Personally, I believe that knowing certain individual content well doesn't necessarily mean you're a good player. On the other hand, having played JP's and adventure box a lot could provide you with a deeper understanding of character control, positioning and making use of the environment. Such skills would come in handy in any kind of dungeon content. To drag this even further, I dare saying that someone playing a lot of PvP can put some of that experience into good use in PvE content. Broader participation translates into more overall AP, as such, I agree with the above posters in favor of judging based on AP.

On the matter of titles, these I consider quite useless really. Take Dungeon Master - you can buy all kind of dungeon paths, half-competent groups can carry a complete noob through the content and so on... having achieved the title doesn't say anything about how you did in the process. Sunbringer is even worse, as you could simply have been leeching all along.

Last but not least, on the matter of communication: What do you gain from asking anyone if he knows what he's doing? In the average players self-centered view, everyone else is usually the problem. I've done plenty of pugging and those rage-quitting a group are usually the worst offenders and it turns out that the group is better off with their replacement. Such a person will always claim to know what he's doing and you likely won't find out till it's too late.

While by no means perfect, the AP-indicator does sound a whole lot more reliable to me...

#2269421 Help with Role in Divinity's Reach

Posted Fireheart on 09 December 2013 - 10:00 PM

I enjoy role playing in Divinity's Reach. I would like to know if someone has found a house that can be accessed (outside from the home instance). I would like to find this to use it as my house in role playing. :D

#2269427 Random Acts Of Kindness - 100g of prizes.

Posted shanaeri rynale on 09 December 2013 - 10:23 PM

In keeping with the time of year it’s time to spread some good news to all men and all thatPosted Image With that in mind my guild, DVDF think it’s time to celebrate and remember those people who have done some amazing and noteworthy things for others in GW2.

We have 4 prizes to give away, first prize of 50g, second of 25 and two of 12.5g each.
All you need to do is nominate someone else and tell us (in this thread) what acts of kindness they performed that are particularly noteworthy and should be rewarded.

My guild will then judge the entries, and choose the winners. The contest is open to everyone regardless of the region or server.

Closing date for entries is Christmas day and contest winners will be announced in the new year.

Have fun

Our decision is final, and we withhold the right to not award a prize to a winner and give it to someone else if their entry is found to be falsePosted Image
This contest is not open to members or ex members of DVDF, we have our own contestPosted Image

#2223870 Election Standings - August 2nd

Posted Angully on 03 August 2013 - 03:50 AM

the fact that people are picking cheaper WP's over abbadon is soo stupid we could be losing out on some of the greatest content this game has had! and for what some stupid reactor :/ Posted Image
Tell me you dont want to fight this!!!!!!

This in my opinion was one of the best fights in gw1 it was a difficult battle that felt very rewarding when completed!!!!!!!!!!!

Why people are voting for Kiel, I have no idea. Can't stand this whole good person has to win stuff. Kiel is a very bland character and I think the living story will still to be quite boring if it continues to revolve around her.

People levy the same criticism at wow. They cry about any part of the world that doesn't relate back to Warcraft games before. The gw universe isn't just what you saw in gw1. Not every villain needs to be a mortal threat to the planet.

You can't continuously pull completely new enemies out of a hat and expect the game's lore to benefit though. You can expand on a game's story with small threats, and those are a good thing, but those threats shouldn't be a completely new group that is immediately forgotten, at least not entirely.

Anet has plenty of forces in game that can be used in these side stories that wouldn't seem like they were generated out of a grab bag of story ideas. GW2 is a heavily story driven game, it is understandable that players get bored of the filler when there is obviously parts of the main story that could be filled out instead.

It isn't necessary at all for everything to come from the original GW1 game (and the poster you replied to doesn't state this etiher that I saw). The stories need to be related to GW2 lore. Currently... they just aren't. Flame and Frost was the way the LS should be going setting wise. Thing like Karkaland should be spread out and preferably connected in a side arc instead of stand alone things. The living story isn't living at all if you can ignore everything that happened in the past.

As for the rewards, sure they are fair. It isn't like you are competing with other players. In competitive games I hate any feature that "helps the person who is winning win more" but this isn't the case here since you can't really be winning.
