#2225049 What makes for a good Mesmer player?

Basically a good mesmer can get out of any tricky situation using his clones and phantasms by shattering or using them normally.

This. Situational awareness is a key aspect of a good player(regardless of profession) How can I tell a good player? Simple, they skill and gear for the situation. Think of the team and ways to keep them alive as well as kill stuff fast.

There are some optimum loadouts for sure, but that doesn't negate the usefulness of others in certain situations. A player who always uses the same skill, gear and traits for every situation will do ok in the game, might even be seen as an amazing player for the amount of damage etc they can do. But for me, a player who knows the tools in their toolbox, thinks ahead and builds and plays for the team will always be a more complete one.

Mesmer Staff is a very viable weapon.

I would compare it to Guardian Hammer, Its a team support weapon. Not every guild wars 2 player has a guild or stable 5 man dungeon party. As someone who usually find pugs via LFG, I realize that not every composition of 5 players includes an 'anchor' of sorts.

Thing is: Mesmer Staff can built built into an Anchor Role. I would even argue it's comparable to the effectiveness of Guardian anchors--I regularly have to go PVT Staff/Sword+focus in order to carry random groups through content like Arah Explorable.

In WvW/PvP Staff is an amazing escape/defensive Option. Its very easy to whittle down groups of melee invaders just by using the staffs constant condition pressure + defense. Also Chaos Storm literally melts thieves, and can do a number on DD eles if you time it proper.

The constant criticism made towards staff DPS is a really weak argument. Why? Because staff is a weapon you don't linger around with...If you need to do damage, you use Sword + X. There are three reasons to swap to staff:
1. Put long CD skills back on CD
2. Proc 'on-swap' Weapon sigils
3. soak up damage/attention/or make space (phase retreat)

Another way to rephrase the staff pickup: expand utility bar...think of it like an engi utility kit. In almost all cases, sword is good for proper damage--However in some cases I'd rather have more utility than more damage, so I swap to staff.

Theres a reason Im not using the class I used to play wouldnt you think??
So what are they? If we know why your not playing that class, what you disliked about it, etc we can better help advise what class might or might not be useful. Right now all you've said is "I want a new class, through about d/d ele as it seems fascinating, what class should I play?" - this does nothing to help people advise you. So here's some questions:

- What classes have you played, and how far?
- What did you like about the classes you played?
- What did you not like about the classes you played?
- What do you find fascinating about d/d Ele's?
- What's attracted you to Thief's?
- Is this for general world PvE, Dungeons, Fractals, WvW or a combination of all?
- Looking for melee or ranged?
- Care about having pets or not?
- Care about group support abilities?
- If 'ranged', close or distant ranged?
- Single target focused or mainly AoE focused?

If boon stripping removed defiant, I could understand it, but imo boon stripping is more of a PvP thing and not that impressive in PvE, with the exception being against dredge disaggragators or whatever with the gong and the bosses with totems (big golem in CoE, final boss in HotW 1).  Overall mobs dont have a lot of boons in PvE.  Focus is definitely a good pull though.

Dead dps may be no dps, but you might want to take the foot out of your mouth before you say the game isn't about dps again, because when you boil it down the game is about killing stuff faster than it can kill you/your party.  Doing lower dps means you/your party is in the fight longer, increasing the odds of failure.  The game is about pumping out as much dps as possible to kill the mob as fast as possible, not outlasting the other mob.

and please, lets not get butthurt over what everyone's opinion on what each class should do is, or start comparing classes with others in effectiveness/efficiency.  there are more than enough threads about all of that.

you are right, dmg is very important in GW2.  but my point still stands, dead dps vs low dps is incomparable.  its still better to have a little dps coming out than none at all.

and thats my point to the OP - that if he/she is thinking about starting dungeons at a beginner level - thats what they need to focus on.  personal survival because at a very base level this game is all about DPS.  focus on staying alive and contributing to the team with your dmg no matter how little.

after the OP gets a hang of dungeons and what to expect and building a specc around prolonged dungeon exposure - then he/she can start all this min/maxing nonsense that Guang and Strife let spill over from their ranger vs warrior dps thread.

seriously, a word on this drama: I respect what Guang is trying to do with profession diversity promotion.  i also respect what strife is trying to do with high level play requirements promotion - but you guys need to find a happy median here.  you WANT profession diversity and you also WANT a standard set for high level play.

but at the end of the day, i think profession diversity is going to pull ahead of high level play standards because GW2 content can be completed with all group compositions.

seriously, that is a fact - bringing a ranger or a necro is not going to guarantee failure in any GW2 content.  so stop filling the community's head up with this utterly false mentality.

To me, nothing will ever compare to how fun GW1 was. Im pretty sure GW2 wont, especially since Nexon has anything to do with it now.

Guild Wars 1 was a true gem, though I suspect ANet stumbled across it by chance! Guild Wars 2 is just standardized MMO trash that copies WoW and Korean grinders too hard. The fact that Anet had to take down their blogs written during the design process stating their aims and ideas says it all.

Rest in peace Guild Wars 1, I don't think a worthy successor will ever emerge.

The last day dawns on the Kingdom of Ascalon. It arrives with no fanfare, no tolling of alarms. Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze. People carry on with their daily lives, unaware that in a short while… everything they have ever known will come to an end.

I can't tell if sarcastic... or just brainwashed.

Well as that user prowls the forums looking for any and every way possible to have a go at the game or anet, instead of just moving on and playing something they enjoy, I'd say sarcastic.

#2204952 Why play anything other than War, Guard, or Mesmer?

True true, but he's saying that guardians, mesmers and warriors are not needed to finish everything. Yes, GW2 is seriously unbalanced in terms of profession skills, but not so unbalanced where any profession can get the job done.

You say that loot is a problem, yes it is. You say that people want cash as fast as possible, once again, true, but we are not talking about money here, we're talking about fun and playstyle.

Unfortunate that professions aren't balanced? Yes. Gamebreaking ? No.

What's gamebreaking is the awful living story stuff so far...

@ Baldur - this ^

if the OP were asking why only Guard mes or war for speed clearing, then this would be an entirely different discussion.  but he's asking is there a need as a whole to only play these three professions and the answer is most definitely no.

now you can say that the ultimate goal for everyone in GW2 is to make money and buy precursors and in that case then sure these three professions would be a necessity as its the most efficient way to achieve that ultimate goal.

unfortunately - that is not everyone's ultimate goal with GW2.  precursors are for legendaries.  i for one have no interest in getting a legendary.  not a single one interests me.  i play a thief, so the shortbow or daggers are the only thing i would want and well. . .lets just say the shortbow aint my style if you know what i mean and the dagger is ugly.  i mean i like the flame blade but hte hilt? is ridiculous.

i think infinite light > bolt

i am actually pretty upset with Dawn and Twilight as they are the same skin with different colors.

anyway, without going on too much of a rant, for someone like me, legendaries arent interesting.

#2204913 Why play anything other than War, Guard, or Mesmer?

Posted Dasryn on 22 May 2013 - 06:01 AM

reasons to pla something other than war guard mes?

here's a few:
  • becaues you want to play something that is fun for you
  • because you RP and you made a character that isnt a war guard or mes
  • because you want to relate to the character you control on screen and you simply arent a war gurad mes type
  • and lastly:
Because it is not NEEDED in GW2

lets think about htat last one for a sec.  Why is there a need to play war guard or mes in GW2?  there isnt.  all content in GW2 can be completed by all professions.  you can 5 ranger all dungeons, you can 5 necro all fractals, you can WvW with all engies.

the need is derived from speed clears or gold farming.  because its easier to do what is needed to be done to speed clear/farm with those three professions that in order to be taken seriously in the speed clear/farming community you must play those three professions.

so now we're talking outside of said communities - the need to play nothing but those three professions is non existent.

you can play whatever you want and receive ZERO prejudice for it.  i know, i have a ranger that i got DM on.  that means i got into ALL dungeons and completed them with a ranger.  MEANING - i got no prejudice or discrimination for being one of the so called "worst classes of the game".

#2203351 Video: Meet the Consortium

Posted Xunlai Agent on 18 May 2013 - 11:28 AM

The Consortium is a thinly veiled reference to NCSOFT, their shareholders, and their enforces at ArenaNet - I have no doubt in my mind that this is a way for the writers to criticise these guys fearing for their jobs!

So a guy being shit (which is the reason why the person would need those defensive stats (in this specific case)) is absolutely acceptable, but a guy WILLINGLY playing on the exact same level as the absolutely acceptable shit player, is always a burden?
If we are talking about efficiency, then I don't want to see certain gear (and not just MF gear), I don't want to see certain certain weapon/skills/traits, hell, I don't even want to see certain classes in my team.

there are two sides to this argument.

both are good.

1) MF statted equipment should be acceptable as long as the player skill makes up for it.  a great player need not bother with the best of best stats because all content is doable with considerably less than the 'best' gear in the game.

2) MF forces players to sacrifice meaningful stats and could possibly hinder progress

either way - Colin Johansen doesnt like the way it is now - and it will be changed.
