In my opinion it just lets you catch up and speed level a twink so you don't have to go through content you enjoy less again. Most people doing this likely already have one or more characters lvl 80.
Maybe it does not matter anymore, but this wouldn't have been possibly at the release of the game. There were no mats to buy, no guides to follow and you only got a couple of silver for 100 gems anyway. If people were able to invest into gems and get a maxed out char at release that would have been pay2win in my opinion. As it is now you just can achieve things faster that most people already have. Many MMOs introduced mechanics that allow new players to level faster / easier after release (ep boni, leveling with friends, more rewarding encounters etc.). I do not see much of a problem in that.

Also, working through the guides still takes some time, it is not like you hit a button and get 80. Getting all the mats gathered (counting what you have, buying all the rest, sometimes waiting to get them because instant buy is expensive etc.) takes some time. I "skipped" dull leveling phases (esp. the one before you get utilities/elites/GM traits) on several alts and it took me about an hour and lots of repitive Alt-tabbing to max one to two crafts. It does not even feel as much as cheating as friendship leveling in WoW in my opinion (which is just ridiculous, getting multiple level-ups in a 15min dungeon), since you potentially need more time for earning the gold on a other character to invest in the crafting plus working through the guides than for just normally leveling the alt. Gemstore left aside, you can see it as a tool to transfer time investment from one chracter to another.

One coming to my mind is Assassin's Creed. I tried to like the series but after / at the end of the first one the whole setting and gameplay was just not exciting anymore, for me at least. I did not really like the story, it seems to me that they overdid making it "different".

It indeed seems to include some very interesting ideas, for example housing combined with PvP territory control. The combat, coming up with numerous skill combos sounds fun, but I'll have to try it out myself. I hope they actually make a difference and create more dynamic play rather than just being a gimmick. Their main game feature (dragons) look kind of "meh" to me. I'd really like to know more about the skill system of players and dragons, talent trees etc. Is there any good website to look that up?

According to SOTG they're gonna nerf Mist Form and Elixir S so that you can't cast anything while they last.
