#2193269 Load times

Posted neoryudo on 19 April 2013 - 01:40 PM

so recently GW2's load times have been getting a bit silly at launch they are not that bad but now loading Lions Arch from character screen takes about 23 seconds and that is on an SSD...

why does it take so long?, i have played other games newer MMO's with better graphics ..(though the zones are not as big) and they load in about 4/5 seconds, that is a massive difference, ....

i have heard deleting the Local.dat helps so that is something i will test below

Files Sizes of Local.dat
Old 43mb
New 2.5mb

so i did some tests

SSD Old Local.dat: 23 seconds

SSD new Local dat: 23 seconds
7200RPM: 45 Seconds
5400RPM: 48 Seconds

so deleting the Local.dat did nothing really so why does it take 23 seconds to load an Area that is horrendous

#2184969 So the new patch...

#2106157 I think I like Magister Sieran

Posted MazingerZ on 03 December 2012 - 07:39 PM

Having done the Priory quest line up to Claw Island (not through), I must say that while Sieran is a little... out there, I find her personality to be a little refreshing as far as talking to Sylvari NPCs.  Caithe and Trahearne are melancholy for different reasons.  Sieran has lust for life, albeit she seems to fit the manic pixie dream girl stereotype to a T.

But for some reason I think she's the most dumped on NPC out of all the Order story lines.  She has the odd exuberance that I got from Killeen.  The whole Sylvari 'knowledge not tempered with subjective experience' thing going.

Anyway, pro-Sieran!  Not saying she's the best, but I can't understand the hate.

#2127677 Class Balance Philosophies

So this has convinced me that the Developers don't really play this game... at all. They also apparently don't listen to those of us who do, The fact that they think it's completely okay that thieves have the best resource system in the game, the best class ability (stealth), the highest burst, the most mobility and the most "oh shit" buttons and are still somehow "balanced" because they can be caught in aoe or are subject to condition damage is beyond inane. Honestly I have no idea why the Developers refuse to listen to the massive amount of negative feedback on how the class operates in spvp and wvw and go around patting each other on the back thinking they've achieved anything resembling balance in this class.

Reading this makes me wonder if you've even played a thief past level 30.

initiative is not the best resource in the game.  It requires you to think about attacks and timing.  Failure to properly use your initiative can leave you in a really bad situation.  It's a class that lets you choose to either dump all your dmg at one point and start dodging attacks, or put out avg dmg over long periods of time.  Just because you don't comprehend the cons of the class does not mean it's over powered.

There is nothing wrong with the class.  All these complaints sound exactly like the complainers from WoW who constantly called OP on rogues.

#2123432 The Effect of Quasi-Living for the Success of an MMO.

Posted Sheepski on 19 December 2012 - 08:21 PM

I saw this post: http://massively.joy...-mean-for-rift/ in relation to Rift's recent staff redundancies.

However the paragraph that caught my eye was:

"But a recent post over at Terra Nova fits well with the discussion of RIFT possibly going free-to-play. In the article, author Edward Castronova posits that SWTOR struggled and went free-to-play because it didn't develop a world, just a game. He went on to say that MMOs in general have paid so much attention to the game side of things that they've neglected the experience of the virtual world itself, the place space where there is downtime and you can "just be." He points to EVE and argues that it successfully creates a world in which you can quasi-live."

In my opinion at least, this would indicate that in the opinion of the author, a defining feature of a game and whether it'll be successful, in the long term, is whether the game world is live-able. If this is the case, the future of Gw2 has got to be bright, surely?

Many MMO's focused on the content and forgot about creating an awesome world, and thus suffered declining subs and player base. However Gw2 has one of the best ambient environment, landscapes, use of space/land mass and living cities/outposts etc of any game I've played. A-net can improve the content available to satisfy the player base (assuming you believe there's anything wrong) but if a game lacks the environment, there's not a lot you can do, besides completely re-design it.

We don't know, that armor/clothing is not available to players yet.

OP must be smoking good stuff cause Engi is a top tier class in every aspect of the game.

#2055901 Thief Rebalancing hints by J. Sharp

Posted Malgonus on 01 November 2012 - 12:26 PM

Here's a hint: play a thief through 80 before making judgement. IMHO, hitting a target dummy does not seem to be a good testing method. My main is a warrior and I hated thiefs, so I decided to roll one. Yes they are a DPS class and hit hard, but they have very low armor and health. Game developer ruin games by listening to whiners. Hope Anet doesn't change a thing.

#2060801 Is short build viable instead of p/p with Minion's Invincible Thief Build?

Posted The Shadow on 04 November 2012 - 09:50 AM

I still think Shortbow is the best weapon we have access to.

Especially with the up and coming D/D nerfs.

P/P is great and that, but it's bloody boring.

Oh. It's worth noting however...

Condition builds kinda suck in WvW due to the mass of AOE condition removal via Guardians and Necros. Shortbow is far better than P/P in WvW purely because you can actually hit multiple foes with SB as opposed to just one, even with the auto attack. But yeah.. I wouldn't go with a condition build for that purpose. Probably wouldn't touch a condition build in any form of the game except for PvE tbh.

Also, just because people use one thing more or less does not make it better or worse. People still use S/P a lot despite it being absolutely inferior to D/D.

Am I the only one who prefers realistic, medieval influenced aesthetics for weapons and armour?

Yes, those look like shit. This is a fantasy themed game, therefore we want fantasy themed weapons.

#2057379 Has shortbow fallen out of favor?

Posted Uder on 02 November 2012 - 07:36 AM

The amount of noobs claiming its crap in this thread is funny, ever tried shotgunning with a shortbow? Combine it with a skill I won't tell now and everything falls within cluster bomb range. It's also a must have weapon while penetrating walls while sieging. 5k+ aoe ftw.

#2052516 Can we expect a nerf to Dagger Autoattack?

Posted Tenofas on 30 October 2012 - 02:18 PM

A thief asking for a nerf in his own class?

The point is, why gimp yourself just because a weapon isn't "cool"?

Agreed. Like I said, I understand its utility and I use it when the situation presents itself. I just don't like how it plays, either in a group or solo.

The shortbow does something useful for coordinated dungeon play? Interesting. You may know something I don't.

Spammable AoE Weakness is a pretty handy tool in our utility belt, and the ranged AoE has some advantages. SB may not be necessary, but it does have its uses.

#2040502 What race for thief?

Posted Lunacy Polish on 24 October 2012 - 07:07 PM

I made a Sylvari because:

They look creepy.  I like my assassin types subtly monstrous.
They have some very body thin frames suggesting agility available.
The bio glow and weird eyes look cool under a hood.
