The best way to learn is make your first set of exotic armour a berserker set, then you'll start picking up how to dodge etc from the start.

Then you don't have to waste money/materials making other sets first, before migrating to berserkers.

I don't necessarily agree with the fact that berserkers will teach you how to dodge. I think it rewards people who CAN dodge. I automatically assume that new players can't dodge, so I suggest armor which is more forgiving. Knights isn't a completely sunk cost, either. I will occasionally switch to it if I have to run a meta build for pugs. With all the bank/bag space you get in GW2, extra armor and weapon sets only help you!

Most of the guilds I have encountered (mine included) do not mind if a new guardian is using a set of knights, as they will be going on planned runs with an experienced group.

That is a debatable point.  A knight guardian doesn't do much damage at all.

I won't debate with you; guardians running knights gear don't do as much damage as guardians running berserker gear, provided the player is experienced and doesn't die. My point was that inexperienced players running berserker gear die easier and more frequently, resulting in a much lower contribution to DPS on runs.

Why would anyone want you to run with less DPS?

Because sub-optimal DPS is better than non-existent DPS.

I think you are confusing "Gear Treadmill" with "something to do".  You picked the wrong game if you want the former, but this game has a serious problem with the latter.

In most cases, I'd think that a gear treadmill would both provide both activities to complete and a set of goals to work towards. Why don't you think that is the case?
