That's similar to what I did too. I use masterwork/rare armor, rare weapons (all from drops/mystic forge) but crafted a set of full exotic trinkets + jewels because:
1. I don't have enough gold for full exotic set.
2. Exotics suppose to have the best stat.
3. Trinkets does not have visual appearance. It is all about stats. I don't have to worry about getting another set once I have the best one.
4. Trinket drops are very, very rare, so does through mystic forge. Do exotic trinket drops even exist?
I guess I have to save my money for the ascended tier instead of other exotics now.
Legendaries was not on my to-do list before this blog post but now I have to reconsider it since Anet promises to give them the best stats, no matter how many more tiers they will add in the future, if any.
