What this proves is that predatorial, exploitative, insidious business models can exist in both pay-to-own and subscription models. What we have to watch out for in the future isn't the financial model, but whether any of the people involved have acted like sharks. I know I won't trust an NCsoft product ever again. Blade & Soul, WildStar, and any future titles are all off my list solely because they're NCsoft. With NCsoft being obviously owned by Nexon at this point, it's clear that future games will only be more predatory, not less.
And I'm not the kind of sheep who'll roll over and take bad punishment up the butt. I actually respect myself enough to not stand for that. So NCsoft isn't getting any more of my money. So long, ArenaNet. It was nice knowing you when you were you. Back when you were the ArenaNet that put together the likes of Prophecies, when you actually believed in your passions, rather than the shameless construct of exploitation you've become today.

1.) There will indeed be more tiers. Likely many more, whenever they feel like it.
2.) The insane amount of grind required to get a single piece is nothing short of predatory.
3.) The gear is a key to exclusive content which requires it. There'll be more like that.
WoW, then. Right? WoW does all that.
Does the fanboy side of this argument have any ammunition left?
this isn't the arenanet i knew

It's called cosmetic progression, y'know, the thing they sold millions of people the game on.
Just because you can't comprehend how a game can exist without being a verbatim copy of WoW doesn't mean it's impossible.

Your inability to understand that MMOs can exist without anything other than inane time sinks does not equate to reality.
If you are so against the idea of the game being about anything other than mindlessly wasting your time, go back to WoW.

GW2 actually allows a bit more freedom in this department. Yes there will be some sort of cookie cutter spec for each class, but not as strict as wow.
So how can you say that it's too dumb down when
a: game isn't even out yet and they're still working on classes?
b: they already announced big changes to classes for BWE3, so you can't assume anything at this point since you have no idea what's coming.
c: If you read the interview with John Peters you'll see that there are specs we haven't even heard of that are being used in internal testing so you can't possibly know if we're all going to be using the same spec or not.
d: you've played what? 100 hours of GW2?200 hours? You can't possibly expect to define the whole meta game in this short period of time when classes are still being balanced and you spent hardly any time in game.
So yeah, you (when i say you i mean everyone who's already jumping the gun qqing about nerfing this or nerfing that) can sit there with that attitude of presuming that you already know how gw2 is gonna be, or you can actually wait for the end result and then adapt.
Just my 2 cents.
