I’m struggling to choose between one of these two since I want to play a caster. I didn’t really like the necromancer so these are my other choices. What are the pros and cons of each?

I think I can give you some good advice for that, since I play both and both are lvl 80 full exotic already.

I mainly use my elementalist for dungeons and events, eventhough I used to spvp and WvW a lot as elementalist. Elementalist is pretty usefull in teams, however, it's not a profession that's made to kill. This, however, does not mean you're useless in 1vs1. As D/D and staff you can find your ways around to win a lot 1vs1's, as long as you know the tricks.

I use my mesmer now only for WvW. I help groups out getting into keeps, roam with it and win 1vs2 or sometimes even 1vs3, just because you can create so much confusion that you basicly kill people, without them even noticing who killed them. I love the whole confusion part of mesmer. It's like you're playing with someone else's mind.
However, what I don't like about mesmer is the PvE part. You have to be pretty supportive if you want to be a bit usefull for your team.

So kinda to sum things up:
Want support and PvE: Elementalist
Want to roam alone of with a few people in wvw and cause confusion: Mesmer.

In Topic: Elementalist Scepter/Focus: Dungeon and Solo Ability - Build Concepts?

Hey guys,

As the name suggests - I'm looking to see what the general consensus is on Scepter/Focus - a weapon set I've not really heard anything about, positive or negative. I was hoping to get some idea of what stats to build for and where - what armor/trinkets/weapons should I shoot for? Also, what sorts of utilities/traits would best facilitate the skill set that this weapon combo has access to?

Hi there!

Scepter/Focus is a great weapon set for the elementalist.
It's mainly used to tank certain parts of dungeons and can also be used in a condition build for 1vs1.

There are a few builds you can use as S/F:
-Signet build
-Cond. Damage.

In all 3 kinds of builds, cond. damage will be the main aspect to deal damage with, since you hang out a lot in earth atunement.

As for tank, I would use anything that looks like this build:

The short cooldowns on your cantrips, combined with the earth immunity recharges, makes you really tanky and being able to tank any hard-hitting skills. I used to run this build in arah for giganticus to tank the 2nd and 3rd stage. Run this build + tank gears and you'll be able to solo Giganticus Lupicus 2nd/3rd stage.

As for the support this game has to offer, you either heal or give your allies boons. In this case, it will be the boons part. You wont be able to heal much as with staff, so why would you use S/F as support, if staff heals better? Well here's why:
Flame wall (#4 of fire) has a really long duration. As S/F you have about 4 ''combo finishers: blast''. (#2/3 Fire, #5 Water, #4 Earth.) Cast these while you're on the firefield and you'll stack up to 12 might to all your nearby allies.

The build:

Since you can't have 30 points in earth, you'll just have to spam your signets all the time. That's also the reason why I took the signets with the shortest cooldowns.

DPS/Condition Damage:
Since you got a lot toughness and 2 immunity's, you can go for full rampagers to get that crit rate up to gain constant vigor, constant burning and have a good benifit of the last minor trait of Arcane power.Try to keep up the might-stacking for more bleed damage and basicly just spam #1 skill of earth.

In Topic: kind of getting bored already.

I've been playing this game for 480 hours over the past 48 days. I've made an elementalist and a necromancer to lvl 80 full exotic and have been doing dungeons 3/4 of the time. I never got bored at those dungeons because, mostly, I'm doing arah.
480 hours and never got bored while I see people complaining about being bored, stuck at lvl 80 for 2 or 3 days.
What exactly are you people looking for? I'm sure those people don't even want to ''search'' for the fun in this game. It's not like the fun is popping out of nowhere without doing anything for it.

For example: You like dungeons, but you're too lazy to search a party.
Or at PvP: You like an organised WvW zerg, but you're too lazy/shy to search for a good WvW guild on your server.

I must be honest, 90% of the dynamic events are.... boring after a while. (mostly talking about the lvl 80 ones) However, the story line quests can be really cool.

And if you don't like WvW or PvE at all, just go into sPvP and test out build you've made by yourself or test out builds from other people with other professions! There's enough to do in this game.. It's sad to see people leave because they don't want to take a hour or two to get tons of fun out of this game.
