You can already do it. Just like buying stuff from merchants in GW1 (ectos, other mats, etc), the price will be variable based on how many people want it.

"Oh noez, prices are higher!" you say? Well so is income. Rares are selling for double what they were a month or so ago. Rare material prices have gone up. Dungeon loot has increased. It's a lot easier to farm money today then it was at the start. It's only natural gem prices are going up when more people have more money to spend on them, and its around holidays.
