#2204267 Thief DAGGER/PISTOL (Not D/D, not S/P, not anything else) and Shortbow Build....

To add to that... I'd rather not be considered an authority. The same rules apply to everyone. Listen to what they say, try it out, think, and draw your own conclusions. Just like Soki said.

Ditto.  While I appreciate the vote of confidence, I do not consider myself an expert on thieves, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt.  Take it, examine it, test it, and if you like it, run with it...otherwise, try something different :) .

I dunno what you guys are talking about--I'm keeping my blue hat and fluffy feather. I've wanted to be a musketeer all my life! :P

Kidding aside, I'll echo Loperdos here by saying I like the Guru community best when it's all of us testing/trying/experimenting as a group. When we're all contributing toward the mutual goal of enhancing our experience playing the thief, I'm happy.

The amalgam typically serves better than isolation in most anything, and theorycrafting and building no less the case.

Hi rachmani, currently my thief has 961 toughness.  i know you specified around 1200 but lets say im pretty good with dodging and avoiding dmg, would 961 toughness be sufficient for higher fractals?  or is that too much one shot?

It might force you to use shortbow a bit more often, but thats it. Your margin for error becomes smaller, but if you don't get hit anyway, who cares. It all depend on how fast you learn and how good you react.

just stop.

i see this response getting thrown around in this forum and its a bunch of BS.  yes player skill and dungeon familiarity plays a large role in survivability but you must acknowledge that there are situations in which you cant avoid dmg, or you time that one dodge wrong in full zerker gear.

you need people that can bring support into a fight.  they designed the game that way.

i agree with you.  but a support role can boost already good dps.  vulnerability, stacks of might, weakness, etc.

im calling the 1%ers and the min/maxers elitist because you dont have to min/max in this game to get a significant advantage.

i think we can all agree and HAVE ALREADY AGREED that the game is easy enough where you dont have to min/max.

seriously.  i see this min/max talk here then i turn around and see people berating GW2 for being so faceroll easy.

if its faceroll easy then you dont need to min/max.  but if you are saying that min/maxing is needed then the game isnt that easy.

its one or the other

The funny thing is, the "elitists" usually aren't even the people in the business of minmaxing.  They're just the ones who think warriors are best because they can't do math.  The sheer number of warriors who think their DPS is 20k per second because that's the final number on their HB is mind-boggling.  I once had a warrior tell me the axe chain was 1.75s because that's the total time on the tooltips, even though that's obviously wrong since Double Chop doesn't even have an activation time listed.  I also once had a warrior tell me he was using Banner of Defense for DPS because he had Armored Attack traited so it was giving the most DPS.

Ironically, most of the people who do talk about minmaxing are good enough that it doesn't really make any difference whether they actually do it or not, which is probably why a lot of classes go unexplored and the "meta" is just spamming warriors.  People who follow the "meta" are usually the ones who need it as a crutch, not to optimize.  That's pretty much true of any meta in any game.

#2203228 Consortium is Nexon/NCSoft?

hah, I linked that page in a thread in november also, thread got locked, people called me a troll, but still relevant.

In fact, at the time I linked to it because I thought it was a funny piece and didn't really believe in what it said, but as of right now I definitely am believing it more and more

What I want to know is why is the Consortium (NCsoft) trying to kill the refugees (Anet) who got their home (philosophy) take away by the clutches of an evil organization the Flame Legion (Nexon), by turning the Southsun Cove (GW2) which is supposed to be a lush, vibrant, and natural environment (revolutionary game) into some kind of getaway resort for the rich (cash shop monger)?

why man why

#2202733 Zhaitan: The Body Found

Posted lolevy on 16 May 2013 - 09:35 PM

Finally, after months of questioning the fate of the Elder Undead Dragon, I've found Zhaitan's body!

After killing the Elder Dragon (with sparkle cannons =P), my party and I decided to check-off skydiving over Orr from our Things-To-Do-After-Level-80 List. Well, amazingly, we all forgot our parachutes on the ship and fell tragically to our deaths.

We found we ended up where our first gunship had fallen, still running along with various other Pact soldiers (who we hope weren't ghosts @_@) Fortunately, I brought a revive orb and thus we began our exploration, or so we thought. Unfortunately though, I was the only one not stuck with the ship (curse those invisible walls!) so I had to venture alone. From this point it was all just empty space and swimming in nothingness for a long while which I will not bore you with a thorough retelling of.

After long periods of swimming and moving around invisible walls, I found Zhaitan! Here are the screens =3

EDIT: Forgot to also mention, found Zhaitan's tails that were cut/beamed off which actually led me to Zhaitan, so I guess those are also included in the model.

#2200862 Why hasn't Anet addressed the current zerker or gtfo pve endgame?

i think finally for once we can agree that there is something indeed screwed up about GW2.  this whole system never sat well with me and i actually want the trinity back.  it gave everyone more to do than dps and self heal.  in my thread people defended GW2 by saying that there is more depth because you must dodgeand apply boons etc.  thats a load of crock

Thank you. It was a noble idea to try and make the game easier for solo play and easier to find groups, only I don't think they could ultimately pull themselves far enough away from the typical class system to make it work. I don't doubt that their ideas could be realized, I just don't think they were able to pull it off. However, while it may be fatally flawed, it may also provide a stepping stone to better combat in other games in the future. And, with some hard work balancing the game, they can probably at least make it much better. Ultimate the game is not a waste or a failure, but if they want to have a chance to make it great, they need to do some hard work. Hopefully it is happening, I'm just not sure it is.

im loving how this is all of a sudden an issue.

and yes it is all of a sudden an issue.  i've seen probably 4 threads in the last week pertaining to this "meta".

i brought this up about 3 months ago and i was told there is nothing wrong with the game.

You brought this up 3 months ago and pinned it on the players. You can't change player behavior without changing the game - so it is a developer problem. Sorry, but while you had the right idea that it is a problem, your insistence that the players need to change their behavior is not realistic or even the problem.

The problem is that this game is made largely for solo play. As such, every class must be able to survive on their own. Which means that in their limited skill bar, most of the skills are related to DPS and self healing. There isn't even enough space to add things that make teamwork and other interesting gameplay viable without nerfing the ability for each class to go through their personal story and open world solo.

Of course, it doesn't help that balance is so screwed up that things like conditions don't even work as well as straight up DPS.

If you step back and take a look at what ANet was trying to do, which is create a game without the negative effects of the trinity, they did a lousy job. Mostly because they fell into the same class stereotypes that are in trinity games, and kind of rely on the trinity. Why, for example, would you roll a class with a lower armor rating and DPS than a warrior for PvE except to take advantage of a couple of really great utility skills such as the mesmer has? There is no real reason as it relates to effectiveness in PvE.

#2200595 Why hasn't Anet addressed the current zerker or gtfo pve endgame?

Posted FoxBat on 10 May 2013 - 11:59 AM

They made this pretty clear in the year-plan. Casual daily open world grind is their focus. Dungeons they can't even be bothered to "overhaul" like they suggested, if you can call fighting the howling king on the stairs an "overhaul." This is not Vanilla WoW where everything pointed towards raids. Dungeons are just a bone thrown at a specific kind of player, but with not nearly enough attention to make them a robust experience.

This attitude towards "hardcore" PvE content really shouldn't surprise anyone considering this is the company that gave us Shadow Form. Though I have to say I'd take the GW2 meta over actual optimal GW1 dungeon builds, at least you have to worry about responding to big boss attacks rather than holding down the "I win" button.

#2200345 What is each classes "Job" in a dungeon?

this is understandable.  i just wanted you to be taking into consideration the circumstances surrounding your speed runs.  the amount of planning and willingness it takes to organize this type of test environment is not available to a large portion of the GW2 community.

well its available per se but i honestly dont feel like a majority of the community is willing to pursue this type of play style.

The problem is that his guild isn't suited for testing new builds, since it's a speedrun guild, not a high-level meta guild per se.  I believe he's stated at one point that his guild pretty much only runs warriors, guardians, and mesmers, and that he actually makes it a requirement that you only run those classes in dungeons.  That means he 's basically developed a lot of experience running one specific composition, so while they may be good at running predetermined roles with warriors and guardians, most of them don't have any experience with other classes.

It's actually been proven on multiple occasions that for raw DPS, warriors aren't really any better than anyone else.  To my understanding, there is a video of a group of thieves killing the slave driver way faster than any warrior group could ever do it, and his response was "we managed to do an entire run two seconds faster."  Two seconds?  You know what can add two seconds to a run?  One guy sneezing at a bad time, or a internet hiccup, or any number of things.  Similarly, I've posted a few videos of various classes (engineer, guardian, ranger) outdpsing his warrior equivalent in the same content, but he's chosen to ignore those because they simply aren't convenient for his worldview.

The point being, DnT basically runs warriors in their "meta" because of personal preference, not because it's actually better.  It does serve as a good reference for the average pug, though, in the sense that they do relatively easy strategies for clearing content without a minimal investment of effort.  The fact of the matter though is that the warrior's primarily roles are 1) banners and 2) DPS, and banners don't stack and anyone can DPS, so it's not like you must take only warriors.  That's just silly, it's like saying you must take only guardians for applying regen to the party, when pretty much every class can do that.
